Carə tuttə, Vi ricordo che domani 27 Aprile alle 11 in Aula Seminari si terrà il seminario di Federica Bertolotti (SNS Pisa) dal titolo "Integral Simplicial Volume and Delta Complexity: find the differences". Di seguito l'abstract. Integral Simplicial Volume and Delta Complexity are invariants that try to capture the complexity of manifolds in terms of simplices from two different points of view. The exact value of these two invariants is known in dimensions 1 and 2, where they always coincide. It is then a natural question whether these two invariants are still close to each other in higher dimensions. During this talk, we will see possible approaches to address this problem, even with the awareness that computations become very hard already in dimension 3. Carə tuttə, Vi ricordo che oggi alle 11 in Aula Seminari si terrà il seminario di Léo Bénard (Georg-August Universität Göttingen) dal titolo "Torsion function on character variety, divisor and multiplicity". Di seguito l'abstract. Reidemeister torsion is a combinatorial invariant, famous among other things for distinguishing finite quotients of the sphere S^3, the lenticular spaces, which have the same homotopy type but which are not homeomorphic. The study of the torsion for more general 3-manifold (such as knot exteriors) is closely related to the study of their character varieties: these are algebraic varieties whose points are conjugacy classes of representations of fundamental groups. I will review some results I obtained in my thesis on this subject, and will discuss a recent result in collaboration with Ryoto Tange, Anh Tran and Jun Ueki, where we study the divisor induced by the torsion on these varieties. Care tutte e cari tutti, Vi ricordo che domani alle 11 in Aula Seminari si terrà il seminario di Raphael Zentner (Durham University) dal titolo "SL(2,C)-character varieties of knots and maps of degree 1 – Raphael Zentner (Durham University)", di cui riporto l'abstract We ask to what extend the SL(2,C)-character variety of the fundamental group of the complement of a knot in S^3 determines the knot. Our methods use results from group theory, classical 3-manifold topology, but also geometric input in two ways: the geometrisation theorem for 3-manifolds, and instanton gauge theory. In particular this is connected to SU(2)-character varieties of two-component links, a topic where much less is known than in the case of knots. Matematica) Instanton Floer homology of almost-rational plumbings Antonio Alfieri UQAM Plumbed three-manifolds are those three-manifolds that can be be realized as links of isolated complex surface singularities. Inspired by Heegaard Floer theory Nemethi introduced a combinatorial invariant of complex surface singularities (lattice cohomology) that was recently proved to be is isomorphic to Heegaard Floer homology. I will give an introduction to lattice cohomology, and expose some work in collaboration with John Baldwin, Irving Dai, and Steven Sivek showing that the lattice cohomology of an almost-rational singularity is isomorphic to the framed Instanton Floer homology of its link.

The conference is jointly organised by the Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics (FIM) and the Department of Sciences and Methods for Engineering (DISMI) of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, on the occasion of 70th birthday of Luigi Grasselli, full professor of Geometry at DISMI. The conference focuses on recent advances in Geometric Topology, with a particular attention to combinatorial descriptions of 3- and 4-manifolds (branched coverings, knots and braids, trisections, colored graphs, etc…), as well as to the interactions with other disciplines, ranging from physics (with the theory of *random tensors*) to geometrical aspects in classical and contemporary art.
