Abstract: In the talk I will outline the proof of the fact that if a 3-manifold M has a fundamental group which satisfies a group-theoretical condition called RFRS (residually finite rational solvable) then a finite index cover of M fibers over the circle. This result, due to Ian Agol, makes no geometric assumptions on the manifolds involved, and uses rather extensively classical instruments in 3-manifold topology, such as the theory of normal surfaces, as well as more "modern" notions such as the Thurston norm on H_2(M). Once we establish that the fundamental group of a hyperbolic 3-manifold satisfies the RFRS condition, the proof of the virtual fibering conjecture follows directly from this result.
