Speaker: Federico Pasqualotto (Berkeley)
Title: The singularity formation problem in incompressible fluid dynamics
Abstract: We will introduce the singularity formation problem in incompressible fluid dynamics, with a focus on the Navier—Stokes equations and the 3d incompressible Euler equations. We will discuss model problems of increasing complexity, and we will comment on recent results, with an emphasis on the use of computer-assisted techniques. We will finally provide an overview of the first swirl-driven singularity formation result for the 3d incompressible Euler equations in the whole space, obtained in collaboration with Tarek Elgindi (Duke University).

Title: Atypical spectral and transport properties of non-locally finite crystals (and maybe more).
Abstract: In the first part of the talk we discuss recent results on Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs which are non-standard in the sense that we allow vertices to have an infinite number of neighbours. It turns out that such non-locally finite graphs exhibit various phenomena which are absent in the locally finite setting: and this is true from a spectral as well as transport point of view. Using some explicit examples, we shall illustrate such new effects in more detail. Quite surprisingly, it turns out that one of the examples provides us with a negative answer to a question raised by Damanik et al. in a recent paper on ballistic transport (this part of talk is based on joint work with O. Post, M. Sabri, and M. Täufer).
If time allows, we shall also quickly discuss spectral comparison results on discrete graphs. In recent years, various authors have derived such comparison results on Euclidean domains and quantum graphs. Our aim is to present a generalization to the discrete setting. Along the way, we also establish a so-called local Weyl law which is of independent interest (the second part of the talk is based on joint work with P. Bifulco and C. Rose).

Title: Regularity and singularities in optimal partition problems
Abstract: In this talk, we discuss regularity properties of minimal segregated configurations, defined as vector valued functions with the property that, for each point in the domain, at most one component is non-zero, and that minimize the corresponding Dirichlet energy. We first introduce the topic, emphasizing the connections with shape optimization problems (optimal partitions) and harmonic maps with values into singular spaces. Then, we introduce the notion of free boundary, we review some known results about its regularity and geometrical structure (mainly focusing on the seminal works by Gromov-Schoen, Conti-Terracini-Verzini and Caffarelli-Lin) and we finally describe recent results obtained in collaboration with B. Velichkov.

Title: Sharp Sobolev and Adams-Trudinger-Moser embeddings for symmetric functions without boundary conditions on hyperbolic spaces
Abstract: Embedding theorems for symmetric functions without any boundary conditions have been studied on flat Riemannian manifolds, such as the Euclidean space. However, these theorems have only been established on hyperbolic spaces for functions with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions. In this presentation, we focus on sharp Sobolev and Adams–Trudinger–Moser embeddings for radial functions in hyperbolic spaces, considering both bounded and unbounded domains. One of the main features of our approach is that we do not assume any boundary conditions for symmetric functions on geodesic balls or the entire hyperbolic space. Our main results establish weighted Sobolev embedding theorems and present Adams-Trudinger-Moser type of embedding theorems. In particular, a key result is a highly nontrivial comparison between norms of the higher-order covariant derivatives and higher-order derivatives of the radial functions. Higher-order asymptotic behavior of radial functions on hyperbolic spaces is established to prove our main theorems. This approach includes novel radial lemmas and decay properties of higher-order radial Sobolev functions defined in hyperbolic space.

Title: μ-ellipticity and nonautonomous integrals
Abstract: µ-ellipticity describes certain degenerate forms of ellipticity typical of convex integrals at linear or nearly linear growth, such as the area integral or the iterated logarithmic model. The regularity of solutions to autonomous or totally differentiable problems is classical after Bombieri, De Giorgi and Miranda, Ladyzhenskaya and Ural’tseva and Frehse and Seregin. The anisotropic case is a later achievement of Bildhauer, Fuchs and Mingione, Beck and Schmidt and Gmeineder and Kristensen. However, all the approaches developed so far break down in presence of nondifferentiable ingredients. In particular, Schauder theory for certain significant anisotropic, nonautonomous functionals with Hölder continuous coefficients was only recently obtained by C. De Filippis and Mingione. We will see the validity of Schauder theory for anisotropic problems whose growth is arbitrarily close to linear within the maximal nonuniformity range, and discuss sharp results and insights on more general nonautonomous area type integrals. From recent, joint work with Cristiana De Filippis (Parma) and Mirco Piccinini (Pisa).
