Care tutte, cari tutti, segnaliamo da parte degli organizzatori Giulia Bevilacqua, Filippo Paiano e Bozhidar Velichkov, l’evento "Calculus of Variations and Free Boundary Problems: the VAREG edition”. Il workshop si terrà martedì 9 dicembre con inizio alle 9.30, presso l'Aula Seminari Est del Dipartimento di Informatica (secondo piano). Entrando dall’ingresso del Dipartimento di Informatica (che sarà segnalato con un cartello indicante il convegno), seguendo le scale sulla destra, l’aula si trova al secondo piano (ci saranno dei cartelli per indicare la direzione dell’aula). Abstract: I will talk about results in generic regularity in obstacle-type free boundary problems. I will explain the core ideas of their proofs focusing on generic regularity for the Stefan problem in 4+1 dimensions, and an application of these generic regularity results to β-models. Idriss Mazari-Fouquer (Université Paris-Dauphine) Title: Quantitative inequalities in optimal control theory and convergence of thresholding schemes Abstract: We will give an overview of recent progress in the study of quantitative inequalities for optimal control problems. In particular, we will show how they can be used to obtain convergence results for thresholding schemes, which are of great importance in the simulation of optimal control problems. This is a joint work with A. Chambolle and Y. Privat.

Salve a tutti, vorrei ricordarvi domani un doppio seminario; alle 17.00 in aula seminari, Eleonora Cinti presenterà "An improved quantitative fractional isoperimetric inequality" alle 17.45, stessa aula, Matteo Talluri presenterà "On a fractional Lin–Ni-Takagi type problem with Neumann boundary conditions" Di seguito gli abstract Siete tutti invitati a partecipare A presto e grazie per l'attenzione Marco An improved quantitative fractional isoperimetric inequality We present an improved version of the quantitative fractional isoperimetric inequality, in which a stronger notion of asymmetry appears. In particular, we show that the square root of the isoperimetric deficit controls, not only the Fraenkel asymmetry, but also a sort of "oscillation of the boundary". In the classical local setting the analogue result was obtained by Fusco and Julin. This is a joint project with E. M. Merlino and B. Ruffini. On a fractional Lin–Ni-Takagi type problem with Neumann boundary conditions We explore a fractional version of a semilinear Neumann problem, introduced by Lin–Ni and Takagi in the ’80s, that arises from the steady states of the Keller–Segel model with non–local diffusion. We study the system under two different “non–local Neumann conditions”: spectral and integral. While spectral conditions admit a Caffarelli-Silvestre type extension theorem, integral conditions do not. This absence makes it more difficult to obtain Liouville–type theorems and to show the non existence of non–trivial positive solutions. Based on a joint project with Eleonora Cinti.

Geometric Analysis seminar: NICOLA GIGLI, 22 ottobre

Dear all, We are pleased to announce a SNS-UNIPI Geometric Analysis seminar. On Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, at 2 pm in the Sala Conferenze at PUTEANO, we will have the pleasure of listening to NICOLA GIGLI (SISSA), who will hold a double seminar: the first hour will be more basic and accessible to everyone, and the second hour will be more specialized. Title: Trading linearity for ellipticity - a novel approach to global Lorentzian geometry Abstract: The concepts of Sobolev functions, elliptic operators and Banach spaces are central in modern geometric analysis. In the setting of Lorentzian geometry, however, unless one restricts the attention to Cauchy hypersurfaces these do not have a clear analogue, due to the signature of the metric tensor. Aim of the talk is to discuss some recent observations in this direction centered around the fact that for $p<1$ the $p$-D’Alambertian is elliptic on the space of time functions. The talk is mostly based on joint project with Beran, Braun, Calisti, McCann, Ohanyan, Rott, Saemann. Best regards, Luigi Speaker: Alice Marveggio (Bonn) Title: The Verigin problem with phase transition as gradient flow Abstract: We study the modeling of a compressible two-phase flow in a porous medium. The governing PDE system is known as the Verigin problem with phase transition, which is the compressible analog to the Muskat problem. Our aim is to prove the convergence of an implicit time discretization scheme using the Wasserstein distance, obtaining distributional solutions in the limit that satisfy an optimal energy-dissipation rate. This talk is based on a joint work with Anna Kubin and Tim Laux.

In passive vector advection, this can be formulated as the exponential growth of the magnetic energy, at a resistivity-independent rate. In this talk, I will provide a construction of a Lipschitz, divergence-free and time-independent velocity field that is a fast dynamo on the whole space.

See you soon, Luigi Forcella ----------------------------------- Speaker: Dorin Bucur (Université de Savoie Mont Blanc) Title: On polygonal nonlocal isoperimetric inequalities: Hardy-Littlewood, Riesz, Faber-Krahn Abstract: The starting point is the Faber-Krahn inequality on the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Many refinements were obtained in the last years, mainly due to the use of recent techniques based on the analysis of vectorial free boundary problems. It turns out that the polygonal version of this inequality, very easy to state, is extremely hard to prove and remains open since 1947, when it was conjectured by Polya. I will connect this question to somehow easier problems, like polygonal versions of Hardy-Littlewood and Riesz inequalities and I will discuss the local minimality of regular polygons and the possibility to prove the conjecture by a mixed approach.
