Title: Pseudo-monotone operator theory for electro-rheological fluids.
Abstract: We consider a model describing the unsteady motion of an incompressible, electro-rheological fluid. Due to the time-space-dependence of the power-law index, the analytical treatment of this system is involved. Standard results like a Poincare or a Korn inequality are not available. Introducing natural energy spaces, we establish the validity of a formula of integration-by-parts which allows to extend the classical theory of pseudo-monotone operators to the framework of variable Bochner-Lebesgue spaces. This leads to generalised notions of pseudo-monotonicity and coercivity, the so-called Bochner pseudo-monotonicity and Bochner coercivity. With the aid of these notions and the established formula of integration-by-parts it is possible to prove an abstract existence result which immediately implies the weak solvability of the model describing the unsteady motion of an incompressible, electro-rheological fluid.

Title:
Some isoperimetric inequality involving the boundary momentum and curvature integrals
Abstract: The aim of this talk is twofold. In the first part we deal with a shape optimization problem of a functional involving the boundary momentum. It is known that in dimension two the ball is a maximizer among simply connected sets, when the perimeter and centroid is fixed. In higher dimensions the same result does not hold and we consider a new scaling invariant functional that might be a good candidate to generalize the bidimensional case. For this functional we prove that the ball is a stable maximizer in the class of nearly spherical sets in any dimension. In the second part we focus on a functional involving a weighted curvature integral and the quermassintegrals. We prove upper and lower bounds for this functional in the class of convex sets, which provide a stronger form of the classical Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality involving the $(n-1)$ and $(n-2)$-quermassintegrals, and consequently a stronger form of the classical isoperimetric inequality in the planar case.

Abstract: We revisit a result due to Robinson and Sadowski (2009), who first showed a.e. uniqueness of Lagrangian trajectories for admissible weak solutions to $3$D Navier-Stokes, for sufficiently regular $u_0$. We give an alternative proof, based on a newly established asymmetric Lusin-Lipschitz property of Leray solutions, exploited crucially in the arguments from Caravenna-Crippa (2021) and Brué-Colombo-De Lellis (2021). This approach is more robust, requiring no assumptions on $u_0$ and being applicable also to the stochastic characteristics of the system.
Finally, if $u_0$ is regular (say $u_0\in H^{1/2}$), then we are able to exploit the diffusive behaviour of stochastic trajectories to further prove that, for any fixed $x_0\in\mathbb{R}^d$, path-by-path uniqueness for the SDE $d X_t = u(t,X_t) d t + d B_t, X|t=0 = x_0$.

Cari tutti,
sono lieta di annunciarvi il seminario di Francesco Nobili (che ha da poco iniziato un PostDoc presso il nostro Dipartimento!)

Attenzione: l'orario è un po' strano per evitare di sovrapporci con il colloquio di dipartimento.
Titolo: Stability of Sobolev inequalities on Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature lower bounds.
Abstract:
The problem of stability of the Sobolev inequality in the Euclidean space asks how a function …
[View More]achieving almost equality is close to the family of extremals. This question has received a lot of attention in recent years and is now well understood.
On the other hand, in the setting of Riemannian manifolds, very few is known except in specific cases. In this seminar, we show that almost extremal functions for the sharp Sobolev inequality on Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth are close to radial profiles of Euclidean extremals. An analogous result is established under positive Ricci lower bounds in comparison with radial profiles of extremals of the round sphere. Our arguments rely on rigidity properties of Sobolev inequalities and a generalized version of Lions’ concentration compactness in non-smooth settings. Based on joint works with I. Y. Violo.
