See you soon, Ilaria Lucardesi and Luigi Forcella --------------------------------------------- Speaker: Ihsan Topaloglu (Virginia Commonwealth University) Title: A Variational model involving nonlocal interactions of Wasserstein type Abstract: In this talk I will consider a variational problem which appears in models of bilayer membranes. After introducing and deriving the model I will establish the existence of volume-constrained minimizers where the energy functional consists of two competing terms: a surface energy term penalizing transitions between sets and a nonlocal energy involving the Wasserstein distance between equal volume sets. In the second part of the talk I will consider the maximization of the minimum Wasserstein distance between two given sets, and show that this maximum is obtained by a micella. These results are drawn from joint works with Almut Burchard, Davide Carazzato, Michael Novack, and Raghavendra Venkatraman.

Abstract: In this talk, we introduce a volume- or wetting area-preserving flow whose speed is given by the mean curvature with a non-local term for hypersurfaces with capillary boundary in the half-space. The non-local term creates additional difficulties, say for instance the comparison principle is no longer valid compared to locally constrained type flows. We demonstrate that for any convex initial hypersurface with a capillary boundary, the flow exists for all time and smoothly converges to a spherical cap as time goes to infinity.

Luigi -------- Speaker: Leonardo Tolomeo (University of Edinburgh) Title: Transport of Gaussian measures under the flow of Hamiltonian PDEs: quasi-invariance and singularity Abstract: In this talk, we consider the Cauchy problem for the fractional NLS with cubic nonlinearity (FNLS), posed on the one-dimensional torus T, subject to initial data distributed according to a family of Gaussian measures. We first discuss how the flow of Hamiltonian equations transports these Gaussian measures. When the transported measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the initial measure, we say that the initial measure is quasi-invariant. In the high-dispersion regime, we exploit quasi-invariance to build a (unique) global flow for initial data with negative regularity, in a regime that cannot be replicated by the deterministic (pathwise) theory. In the 0-dispersion regime, we discuss the limits of this approach, and exhibit a sharp transition from quasi-invariance to singularity, depending on the regularity of the initial measure. This is based on joint works with J. Forlano (UCLA/University of Edinburgh) and with J. Coe (University of Edinburgh).

See you soon, Ilaria Lucardesi and Luigi Forcella --------------------------------------------- Title: Unconditional stability of equilibria in thermally driven compressible fluids Abstract: We show that small perturbations of the spatially homogeneous equilibrium of a thermally driven compressible viscous fluid are globally stable. Specifically, any weak solution of the evolutionary Navier–Stokes–Fourier system driven by thermal convection converges to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity. The main difficulty to overcome is the fact the problem does not admit any obvious Lyapunov function. The result applies, in particular, to the Rayleigh–Benard convection problem. Joint work with Yong Lu, Nanjing.

Abstract: We consider a model describing the unsteady motion of an incompressible, electro-rheological fluid. Due to the time-space-dependence of the power-law index, the analytical treatment of this system is involved. Standard results like a Poincare or a Korn inequality are not available. Introducing natural energy spaces, we establish the validity of a formula of integration-by-parts which allows to extend the classical theory of pseudo-monotone operators to the framework of variable Bochner-Lebesgue spaces. This leads to generalised notions of pseudo-monotonicity and coercivity, the so-called Bochner pseudo-monotonicity and Bochner coercivity. With the aid of these notions and the established formula of integration-by-parts it is possible to prove an abstract existence result which immediately implies the weak solvability of the model describing the unsteady motion of an incompressible, electro-rheological fluid.

Da parte di Mauro e del Gruppo Probabilità, inoltro l'annuncio del workshop "Turbulence on the Banks of the Arno" che inizierà domani presso il Centro De Giorgi. Luigi ------ We are glad to announce the 1st edition of the workshop "Turbulence on the Banks of the Arno", to be held at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (Italy) from the 31st of January to the 2nd of February 2024. The goal of the workshop is to provide a platform for early-stage researchers (ideally Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows) working in the field of turbulence to come together, exchange ideas, and present their own research. The workshop will also feature two lecture series, delivered by Professors Jeremie Bec and Michele Coti Zelati. More details are available at the web page: https://indico.sns.it/e/tuba Please notice that registration to the event is free but mandatory. The deadline for registration is November 15th 2023. Accommodation in Pisa will be provided free of charge for all participants, and additional remboursement for travel expenses may be granted upon request.
