Dear all, we are pleased to announce the next appointment of the joint UNIPI-SNS Geometric Analysis Seminar. This week the speaker is Davide Parise, from Imperial College London. Thursday, April 16, 16:30, Aula Riunioni - Dipartimento di Matematica - UNIPI Title: From phase transitions to minimal submanifolds in low codimensions Abstract: Minimal submanifolds—critical points of the area functional—play a central role in geometric analysis, with deep connections to differential geometry, topology, and the calculus of variations. A major breakthrough in their existence theory came with Almgren’s min–max framework in the 1960s, which provides a powerful but technically intricate approach to constructing minimal submanifolds in great generality. In recent years, a new PDE-based perspective has emerged, inspired by models from phase transitions and superconductivity. The guiding principle is to realize minimal submanifolds as limits of nodal sets of critical points of elliptic functionals. In this talk, I will first give an overview of this variational–PDE framework. Using ongoing series of works with collaborators as examples, I will show how it can offer new conceptual insights and, in some settings, greater flexibility than classical min–max techniques. In codimension one, I will focus on the Allen–Cahn functional and explain how it can be used to construct minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary, i.e. meeting the ambient boundary orthogonally. We will then move to higher codimensions (specifically codimensions 2 and 3), where the theory is much less developed. Here, I will discuss the abelian and non-abelian Yang–Mills–Higgs functionals as natural higher codimension analogues and present recent progress in this setting. I will highlight other successes of this theory, and point to some open problems. The content of this talk is based on joint works with Martin Li, Lorenzo Sarnataro, Alessandro Pigati, and Daniel Stern.

Cari/e tutti/e vi ricordo il seguente seminario domani pomeriggio: Dear all, let me I remind you about the following talk scheduled for tomorrow afternoon: Giovanni ====================== date/time/place: Wednesday March 11, 17.00-18.00, Sala Riunioni speaker: Wladimir Neves (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) title: The Hele-Shaw free boundary limit of Buckley-Leverett System abstract: In this talk, we propose a new approach to solving the Buckley-Leverett System, which is to consider a compressible approximation model characterized by a stiff pressure law. Passing to the incompressible limit, the compressible model gives rise to a Hele-Shaw type free boundary limit of Buckley-Leverett System, and it is shown the existence of a weak solution of it. https://www.dm.unipi.it/en/seminar/?id=69a9a28d5874b2b824ec5ead ====================== (The announcement should have been included in the weekly summary, but I could not check last week summary: I simply did not find in my email.) -- ________________________________________________________ Prof. Giovanni ALBERTI Dipartimento di Matematica, Università di Pisa largo Pontecorvo 5 I-56127 Pisa ITALY e-mail: giovanni.alberti(a)unipi.it phone: +39 050 2213 239 virtual office: https://meet.google.com/rmt-jyke-iyw webpage: http://pagine.dm.unipi.it/alberti ________________________________________________________

Trovate l’abstract qui sotto. A presto, Ilaria ----------------------------------- Dear all, next week, as part of the Analysis Seminar Series, we will have the pleasure of hosting Giulia Bevilacqua (Università Ca' Foscari, Venezia), who will give a seminar<https://www.dm.unipi.it/seminario/?id=698ec366dd82ea23a82021df> entitled “The incompressible limit in tumor growth models: from Aronson–Bénilan estimate to free boundary regularity.” The seminar will take place on Thursday, February 19 at 5 pm, in Sala Riunioni. You will find the abstract below. See you soon, Ilaria ----------------------------------- Speaker: Giulia Bevilacqua (Università Ca' Foscari, Venezia) Title: The incompressible limit in tumor growth models: from Aronson–Bénilan estimate to free boundary regularity Abstract: We discuss recent results on incompressible limits and free boundary problems arising in tumor growth modeling. We first revisit classical bounds for the pressure field in the porous medium equation, extending the Aronson-Bénilan estimate. Then, we focus on the geometric free boundary limit in a specific setting, where the tumor is constrained within a bounded domain, part of which is inaccessible and acts as an obstacle. We investigate the existence of viscosity solutions and analyze the regularity of the associated free boundary. This talk is based on two papers obtained, respectively, in collaboration with B. Perthame (LJLL) & M. Schmidtchen (TUM) and M. Carducci (SNS).

seminar by Averil Aussedat - 24 Feb, 11:30, aula Bianchi
by Alessandra Pluda 17 Feb '26

17 Feb '26

Dear all, we are pleased to announce the next appointment of the joint UNIPI-SNS Geometric Analysis Seminar. Next week the speaker is Averil Aussedat, a member of our Math Department. Tuesday, February 24, 11:30, Aula Bianchi - SNS Title: Locality of the centred Wasserstein tangent cone Abstract: Wasserstein geodesics in the space of measures are minimizing an integral cost, that is, a global compromise between local contributions. We show that a particular subset of geodesics is instead characterized by a local condition, which is linked to a decomposition of the initial measure in pieces of "constant dimension''. This has already been observed in smooth cases by Lott, and justified using PDEs: our argument is almost only based on convex analysis, and does not need restriction on the measure.

Horta, dal titolo “Poincaré constants, fundamental frequencies and the isoanisotropic problem”. A presto, Luigi ——— Dear all, On Friday, 23 January 2026, as part of the Analysis Seminar Series, we will have the pleasure of hosting Jule Schindler (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), who will give a seminar entitled “The Nonlocal-to-Local Limit for the Inviscid Leray-α Equations” The seminar will take place in the Aula Seminari ex-DMA at 4:30 p.m. You will find the abstract below. I also remind you that on Wednesday, 21 January at 4 p.m. in Aula Magna, there will be the seminar by R. F. Horta entitled “Poincaré constants, fundamental frequencies and the isoanisotropic problem”. Best regards, Luigi ——— Speaker: Jule Schindler (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) Title: The Nonlocal-to-Local Limit for the Inviscid Leray-α Equations Abstract: We consider the inviscid Leray-α equations -- an inviscid nonlocal regularisation of the Euler equations -- on [0,T]×Ω[0,T]×Ω, α {∂tvα+(uα⋅∇)vα+∇pα=0,vα=uα−α2Δuα,div⁡vα=div⁡uα=0,vα(0,⋅)=v0α,⎩⎨⎧∂tvα+(uα⋅∇)vα+∇pα=0,vα=uα−α2Δuα,divvα=divuα=0,vα(0,⋅)=v0α, with Ω⊂RdΩ⊂Rd, d=2,3d=2,3. On bounded domains, we impose the boundary condition uα=0 on ∂Ω.uα=0 on ∂Ω. In the first part, we prove the convergence of strong solutions of the Leray-a equations to strong solutions of the Euler equations in Hs(Rd),s>d/2+1Hs(Rd),s>d/2+1, for a large class of regularising kernels. In the second part, we conslder weak solutions on a bounded domain with a local scaling property far away from the boundary. The scaling relates to second-order structure functions from turbulence theory and does not imply regularity. Nonetbeless, under these assumptions, the weak solutions converge to (possibly wild) weak solutions of Euler in L2L2 for a.e. tt. ----------- Luigi Forcella, Associate Professor University of Pisa Department of Mathematics Largo Bruno Pontecorvo 5 57127 Pisa, Italy https://pagine.dm.unipi.it/forcella/index.html

See you soon, Ilaria ----------------------------------- Speaker: Raul Fernandes Horta - Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) Title: Poincaré constants, fundamental frequencies and the isoanisotropic problem Abstract: The first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the anisotropic p-laplacian (sometimes called fundamental frequency) has been vastly studied especially due to its variational characterization, which connects it to the Poincaré inequality. In this talk we study Poincaré constants that are defined using the characterization previously mentioned, however, unlike in the classical setting where the energy is given by a norm, here we allow it to be given by seminorms. This opens the question to when these constants are fundamental frequencies (eigenvalues of the Euler-Lagrange equation) of their corresponding operators. Finally, we talk about the isoanisotropic problem, which is an optimization problem that consists of finding seminorms that either maximize or minimize the Poincaré constants. This can be seen as a counterpart of the celebrated isoperimetric Faber-Krahn inequality, which states that the domain that minimizes the fundamental frequency is the ball.
