Plane Waves, Rays, and Control
Abstract:
Replacing derivatives by variables yield a one to one
correspondencebetween linear partial differential operators and
polynomials. A major theme in partial differential equations is to
establish correspondences between the algebraic/geometric properties of
thepolynomials and analytic properties of the differential operators. We
discuss a variety of examples.
1. The method of characteristics in one dimensional hyperbolic partial
differential equations,
2. Plane waves and speeds in dimension 1.
3. Plane waves and elliptic regularity.
4. Control of linear ordinary differential
equations.
5. Control of the 1-d wave equation.
6. Nearly necessary and sufficient condition for boundary control of the
wave equation (joint with C. Bardos and G. Lebeau).
