Dear
Colleagues,
this is
the first announcement of the upcoming fourth RISM school on
"Nonlinear Phenomena in Mathematics and Economics", which
will take place in Varese during September 14-18 at
the Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, "Collegio C.
Cattaneo" Bizzozero University Campus, within the program
Insubria International Summer School.
The event
will be a tribute to JOHN FORBES NASH, Jr. who confirmed his
willingness to participate at the RISM school just a few
days ago in Oslo, just a few hours before his tragic car
accident which has shocked all of us. As most of you
probably know, he was in Oslo for one week celebrations,
being the recipient of the prestigious Abel Prize jointly
with Louis Nirenberg.
The school
will be directed by IVAR EKELAND who will also give a
special lecture as tribute to the "Beautiful Mind".

The
purpose of the School is two-fold: on one hand, leaders of
the field will deliver general lectures addressed to PhD
students, young research fellows and postdocs; on the other
hand, the afternoon sessions will consist of specialist
talks aimed to present the recent advances in the challenges
of contemporary research. Particular attention will be
devoted to problems at the interface between Mathematics and
Economics which can be approached using the language of
Partial Differential Equations and Nonlinear Analysis.

A few
fellowships for PhD students are available and applications
