We begin with an introduction to surface braid groups and mapping class groups, as well as the Birman exact sequence, to link these two objects. Next, we explain the Birman-Hilden double cover of the punctured disc, and attempt to generalize it to other surfaces, which is relevant for surface braid groups. This will motivate the study of liftable surface braids, (braids that lift under this generalized double cover), and we will conclude with some recent results on these.
