In the context of Thurston’s geometrization program, in 1995 Leeb addressed the question of whether a compact aspherical 3-manifold admits a nonpositively curved metric. In this talk, we will present his results, explaining how the problem can be approached using the decomposition of an irreducible 3-manifold into Seifert fibered and hyperbolic pieces. The problem then reduces to the following question: which flat metrics on the boundary tori of each piece extend to a nonpositively curved metric on its interior?
