This question arises naturally in a variety of settings, and we address it in the case of surgeries along knots and their cables. The techniques we use are a combination of Heegaard Floer homology and Donaldson theorem. This is joint work (partly in progress) with Paolo Aceto, Kyle Larson, and Ana Lecuona.
