“Uniformization: from group theory to functional transcendence”

 

Abstract:

Given a manifold M the uniformization problem asks about the relations between the topology of M, the structure of its fundamental group, and the local or global geometry of its universal cover. Poincaré and Riemann completely solved this problem when M is a Riemann surface. In this talk I will discuss different aspects of this question for higher dimensional manifolds, through various examples: affine manifolds, fundamental groups of Kaehler manifolds and functional transcendence properties of algebraic varieties.
