Dear all, We are pleased to announce a SNS-UNIPI Geometric Analysis seminar. On Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, at 2 pm in the Sala Conferenze at PUTEANO, we will have the pleasure of listening to NICOLA GIGLI (SISSA), who will hold a double seminar: the first hour will be more basic and accessible to everyone, and the second hour will be more specialized. Title: Trading linearity for ellipticity - a novel approach to global Lorentzian geometry Abstract: The concepts of Sobolev functions, elliptic operators and Banach spaces are central in modern geometric analysis. In the setting of Lorentzian geometry, however, unless one restricts the attention to Cauchy hypersurfaces these do not have a clear analogue, due to the signature of the metric tensor. Aim of the talk is to discuss some recent observations in this direction centered around the fact that for $p<1$ the $p$-D’Alambertian is elliptic on the space of time functions. The talk is mostly based on joint project with Beran, Braun, Calisti, McCann, Ohanyan, Rott, Saemann. In the second part of the talk I will dig down into the concept of `hyperbolic Banach space’, extracted from an upcoming work of mine. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Best, Alessandra

Best regards, Luigi Speaker: Alice Marveggio (Bonn) Title: The Verigin problem with phase transition as gradient flow Abstract: We study the modeling of a compressible two-phase flow in a porous medium. The governing PDE system is known as the Verigin problem with phase transition, which is the compressible analog to the Muskat problem. Our aim is to prove the convergence of an implicit time discretization scheme using the Wasserstein distance, obtaining distributional solutions in the limit that satisfy an optimal energy-dissipation rate. This talk is based on a joint work with Anna Kubin and Tim Laux.

In passive vector advection, this can be formulated as the exponential growth of the magnetic energy, at a resistivity-independent rate. In this talk, I will provide a construction of a Lipschitz, divergence-free and time-independent velocity field that is a fast dynamo on the whole space.

See you soon, Luigi Forcella ----------------------------------- Speaker: Dorin Bucur (Université de Savoie Mont Blanc) Title: On polygonal nonlocal isoperimetric inequalities: Hardy-Littlewood, Riesz, Faber-Krahn Abstract: The starting point is the Faber-Krahn inequality on the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Many refinements were obtained in the last years, mainly due to the use of recent techniques based on the analysis of vectorial free boundary problems. It turns out that the polygonal version of this inequality, very easy to state, is extremely hard to prove and remains open since 1947, when it was conjectured by Polya. I will connect this question to somehow easier problems, like polygonal versions of Hardy-Littlewood and Riesz inequalities and I will discuss the local minimality of regular polygons and the possibility to prove the conjecture by a mixed approach. We will discuss model problems of increasing complexity, and we will comment on recent results, with an emphasis on the use of computer-assisted techniques. We will finally provide an overview of the first swirl-driven singularity formation result for the 3d incompressible Euler equations in the whole space, obtained in collaboration with Tarek Elgindi (Duke University).

Best regards, Luigi and Ilaria ——— Speaker: Joachim Kerner (University of Hagen) Title: Atypical spectral and transport properties of non-locally finite crystals (and maybe more). Abstract: In the first part of the talk we discuss recent results on Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs which are non-standard in the sense that we allow vertices to have an infinite number of neighbours. It turns out that such non-locally finite graphs exhibit various phenomena which are absent in the locally finite setting: and this is true from a spectral as well as transport point of view. Using some explicit examples, we shall illustrate such new effects in more detail. Quite surprisingly, it turns out that one of the examples provides us with a negative answer to a question raised by Damanik et al. in a recent paper on ballistic transport (this part of talk is based on joint work with O. Post, M. Sabri, and M. Täufer). If time allows, we shall also quickly discuss spectral comparison results on discrete graphs. In recent years, various authors have derived such comparison results on Euclidean domains and quantum graphs. Our aim is to present a generalization to the discrete setting. Along the way, we also establish a so-called local Weyl law which is of independent interest (the second part of the talk is based on joint work with P. Bifulco and C. See you soon, Ilaria Lucardesi and Luigi Forcella ----------------------------------- Speaker: Roberto Ognibene (Università di Pisa) Title: Regularity and singularities in optimal partition problems Abstract: In this talk, we discuss regularity properties of minimal segregated configurations, defined as vector valued functions with the property that, for each point in the domain, at most one component is non-zero, and that minimize the corresponding Dirichlet energy. We first introduce the topic, emphasizing the connections with shape optimization problems (optimal partitions) and harmonic maps with values into singular spaces. Then, we introduce the notion of free boundary, we review some known results about its regularity and geometrical structure (mainly focusing on the seminal works by Gromov-Schoen, Conti-Terracini-Verzini and Caffarelli-Lin) and we finally describe recent results obtained in collaboration with B. Velichkov.
