Please find the abstract below. Best regards, Luigi ----------------------------------- Speaker: Giacomo Del Nin (University of Pisa) Title: Boundary rectifiability and compactness of integral currents via BV functions Abstract: We present a proof of the boundary rectifiability theorem for currents that is based on the theory of BV functions. We use a cylindrical projection argument to reduce to the case of top-dimensional currents (i.e., integer-valued BV functions), to which we can apply De Giorgi’s structure theorem. As a consequence we also present a proof of the compactness theorem for integral currents that is ultimately based on the BV theory. ----------- Luigi Forcella, Associate Professor University of Pisa Department of Mathematics Largo Bruno Pontecorvo 5 57127 Pisa, Italy https://pagine.dm.unipi.it/forcella/index.html

A presto, Luigi. ————————————————— Dear all, We announce the following Analysis seminar: on Thursday, 08 October 2026, 4pm, in Aula Seminari, we will have the pleasure of listening to Beatrice Langella (Univ. of Pisa). The title of the talk<https://www.dm.unipi.it/seminario/?id=6aa7d2b4d052f347a9f0148a> is “Transfer of energy for pure-gravity water waves with constant vorticity”. Please find the abstract below. Best regards, Luigi ----------------------------------- Speaker: Beatrice Langella (University of Pisa) Title: Transfer of energy for pure-gravity water waves with constant vorticity Abstract: Water waves equations describe the time evolution of an incompressible fluid evolving according to Euler equation, in presence of free boundary. In this talk we consider water waves equations in the two-dimensional periodic setting, in presence of gravity, constant nonzero vorticity and infinite depth. Under suitable resonance assumptions on the value of the vorticity, we show that this system admits smooth small-amplitude solutions whose high Sobolev norms undergo arbitrary large growth, whereas their lower Sobolev norms remain small, thereby exhibiting a genuine transfer of energy toward high frequencies. This yields the first rigorous construction of weakly turbulent solutions for a quasilinear hydrodynamic wave system, in a regime where the flow remains smooth. Moreover, the growth occurs simultaneously in the free surface and in the vertical component of the velocity at the interface, showing that the instability involves the full hydrodynamic evolution. The proof relies on a new mechanism for generating energy cascades in quasilinear dispersive PDEs with sublinear dispersion and a nonlinear transport structure. This talk is based on a joint work with A. Maspero, F. Murgante and S. Terracina. ----------- Luigi Forcella, Associate Professor University of Pisa Department of Mathematics Largo Bruno Pontecorvo 5 57127 Pisa, Italy https://pagine.dm.unipi.it/forcella/index.html

Please find the abstracts below. Best regards, Luigi ————————— Speaker: Andrea Merlo Title: Lipschitz functions and the geometry of rough sets Abstract: Rademacher’s theorem tells us that Lipschitz functions on Euclidean space admit linear approximations at almost every point. Can the approximation properties of Lipschitz functions also tell us whether a set has a regular geometric structure? For sets whose measure is comparable to a fixed power of the radius, David and Semmes proposed the following principle: if every Lipschitz function can be well approximated by affine functions, with quantitative control of the locations and scales where approximation fails, then the set must be uniformly rectifiable. This means that every ball contains a substantial portion of the set that admits a Lipschitz parametrization, with uniform bounds. This is the WALA conjecture. In this talk, I present a proof of the conjecture and explain the geometric ideas connecting curves, differentiability and affine approximation. I also briefly discuss applications to elliptic partial differential equations, arising from joint work with Mihalis Mourgoglou, where estimates for solutions reveal geometric properties of the boundary. Speaker: Malte Borken Title: A characterization of submanifolds of mxn matrices satisfying optimal rigidity estimates Abstract: By a theorem of Friesecke, James and Müller from 2002, the set of rotations SO(n) satisfies the following rigidity estimate: If u is an H^1-vector field defined on some bounded Lipschitz domain, then the L^2-distance of Du to a single rotation can be controlled by the L^2-norm of the distance of Du to SO(n). We are interested in the following question: Exactly which structural properties of the set SO(n) enable it to satisfy the aforementioned rigidity estimate? I will discuss a new approach to the problem, which allows one to find necessary and sufficient conditions for a general compact C^1-submanifold of mxn matrices to satisfy such a rigidity estimate. Furthermore, this approach allows one to show that the estimate is stable under small graphical perturbations of the submanifold. This talk is based on my master's thesis, written under the supervision of Konstantinos Zemas and Sergio Conti. ----------- Luigi Forcella, Associate Professor University of Pisa Department of Mathematics Largo Bruno Pontecorvo 5 57127 Pisa, Italy https://pagine.dm.unipi.it/forcella/index.html

Best regards, Luigi ----------------------------------- Speaker: Lars Eric Hientzsch (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie) Title: On leapfrogging vortex rings for the Euler equations Abstract: In 1858, Helmholtz conjectured that coaxial vortex rings in 3D inviscid fluids can exhibit the "leapfrogging" dynamics, where rings repeatedly pass through one another. While well-documented experimentally, this phenomenon involves singular interactions that are difficult to capture analytically. In this talk, we present a rigorous justification of these dynamics for the 3D incompressible Euler equations. We consider a general class of initial data corresponding to N sharply concentrated coaxial vortex rings and prove that the leapfrogging motion persists on a logarithmic time scale. The core of the analysis requires new estimates to propagate the concentration of vorticity despite the singular mutual interactions required for the phenomenon to occur. Joint work with M. Donati, C. Lacave, and E. A presto, Ilaria ----------------------------------- Dear all, next week, as part of the Analysis Seminar Series, we will have the pleasure of listening to Nicola Picenni (Università di Pisa...but not for much longer!), who will give a talk<https://www.dm.unipi.it/seminario/?id=6a3069416ec21225b3f57d4a> <https://www.dm.unipi.it/seminario/?id=6a3069416ec21225b3f57d4a> titled “A notion of fractional area in codimension 2”. The seminar will take place on Tuesday, june 23, at 4:30 PM, in Saletta Riunioni. You will find the abstract below. See you soon, Ilaria ----------------------------------- Speaker: Nicola Picenni (Università di Pisa) Title: A notion of fractional area in codimension 2 Abstract: We consider a notion of fractional s-area for codimension 2 surfaces in a closed Riemannian manifold or the Euclidean space, which can be seen as an extension of the fractional perimeter to higher codimension. The definition involves a minimum problem over a class of circle-valued maps having prescribed singularities on the given surface. We discuss various properties of the s-area when s is fixed, including some regularity properties of the minimizer (which might be of independent interest). We also show that when s tends to 1 the s-area Gamma-converges, with coercivity, to the classical area in the framework of currents. The talk is based on a joint project with Michele Caselli and Mattia Freguglia.

Best regards, Chiara, Davide and Ilaria ------------------------------------------------------------- Speaker: Gigliola Staffilani, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Title: The Study of Wave Turbulence: A Breeding Ground for Mathematical Techniques Abstract: Wave turbulence theory provides a unifying framework for analyzing the nonlinear interactions of dispersive waves across diverse physical regimes. These interactions manifest over an extensive range of scales and media, encompassing phenomena such as gravitational waves in astrophysical contexts, surface waves in fluid dynamics, coherent structures in quantum systems, and even pattern formation in everyday fluid flows. Despite their widespread occurrence, the mathematical analysis of such systems remains exceptionally challenging due to the interplay between nonlinearity, dispersion, and randomness. These difficulties have catalyzed the development of sophisticated analytical and probabilistic tools, drawing from partial differential equations, statistical mechanics, and dynamical systems theory. In this lecture, I will present a short survey of recent advances in the rigorous treatment of wave turbulence, emphasizing key techniques, foundational results, and open problems. Some attention will be given to the derivation of kinetic equations, and the role of resonant interactions in the long-time dynamics of weakly nonlinear wave systems.

seminar - Mattia Magnabosco - Tuesday, April 28, 10:00, Aula Seminari
by Alessandra Pluda 28 Apr '26

28 Apr '26

Dear all, we are pleased to announce the next appointment of the joint UNIPI-SNS Geometric Analysis Seminar. This week the speaker is Mattia Magnabosco, from University of Oxford. Tuesday, April 28, 10:00, Aula Seminari - Dipartimento di Matematica - UNIPI Title: New topological restrictions for spaces with nonnegative Ricci curvature Abstract: The topology of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature has been studied extensively since the earliest developments of Geometric Analysis. In dimension 3, a complete topological classification was only recently achieved by Gang Liu, with a strategy based on minimal surfaces methods. They proved that a 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature either is homeomorphic to R^3 or the universal cover splits a line isometrically. In this talk, I present an alternative proof of Liu’s classification, which also works for nonsmooth RCD(0,3) spaces. This generalisation of Liu’s theorem yields, as a consequence, the full classification of non-collapsed RCD(0,3) spaces without boundary. Our strategy relies on two main building blocks of independent interest, which provide results that are new also in the smooth setting. In particular, we prove that, given a complete n-dimensional Riemannian manifold (M,g) with nonnegative Ricci curvature and first Betti number b_1(M) ≥ n-2, the universal cover splits R^{n-2} isometrically. Moreover, we show that every complete oriented n-dimensional Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has vanishing simplicial volume. This is a joint work with Alessandro Cucinotta and Daniele Semola.

Care tutte, cari tutti, Inoltro il seguente annuncio di un seminario di Fisica-Matematica che può essere di interesse anche per un pubblico più vasto. Lunedì 17 aprile 2026, ore 14, in Aula Seminari Matteo Gallone (Milano, La Statale) terrà un seminario<https://www.dm.unipi.it/seminario/?id=69e393af84f0900654e87dfa> dal titolo "Prethermalization and quasi-conserved quantities in Many-Body quantum systems with time-dependent Hamiltonians”. Trovate l’abstract qui sotto. A presto, Luigi ----------------------------------- Dear all, I am pleased to forward the announcement of an upcoming Math-Physics seminar that may be of interest to a broad audience. On Monday, April 27, 2 pm, in Aula Seminari Matteo Gallone (Milano, La Statale) will give a talk<https://www.dm.unipi.it/seminario/?id=69e393af84f0900654e87dfa> with title "Prethermalization and quasi-conserved quantities in Many-Body quantum systems with time-dependent Hamiltonians”. You will find the abstract below. See you soon, Luigi ----------------------------------- Speaker: Matteo Gallone (University of Milan, La Statale) Title: Prethermalization and quasi-conserved quantities in Many-Body quantum systems with time-dependent Hamiltonians Abstract: Understanding thermalization, i.e. the relaxation of a physical system to thermal equilibrium, is a central problem in statistical physics. It is now well established that the presence of non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities can significantly slow down this process, leading to long-lived quasi-stationary states known as prethermal states. The approach to such states is referred to as prethermalization. In many-body quantum systems, external driving provides a powerful mechanism to engineer and control prethermal states. In the absence of many-body localization, general theoretical arguments predict that time-dependent perturbations ultimately drive the system toward a featureless infinite-temperature Gibbs state. However, both rigorous results and experiments show that, under fast periodic driving, fermionic quantum lattice systems can exhibit exponentially long-lived prethermal regimes, largely independent of the regularity of the drive. The situation becomes even richer for quasi-periodic driving, i.e., when the system is driven by a superposition of incommensurate frequencies. In this case, the regularity of the driving plays a crucial role in determining the lifetime of the prethermal regime. In this talk, I will review the problem and survey recent rigorous results, focusing in particular on the case of finitely differentiable drivings. In this setting, the prethermal state persists for polynomially long times in the driving frequency. I will also explain how to determine the optimal exponents governing this behavior. The analysis combines techniques from Hamiltonian perturbation theory adapted to quantum lattice systems, cluster expansions, and Lieb–Robinson bounds. This is joint work with Beatrice Langella. ----------- Luigi Forcella, Associate Professor University of Pisa Department of Mathematics Largo Bruno Pontecorvo 5 57127 Pisa, Italy https://pagine.dm.unipi.it/forcella/index.html
