Dear all,
This is a reminder that registration for the 12th edition of Young
Geometric Group Theory (YGGT XII) is currently open. The registration form
and instructions can be found on the conference website:
https://sites.google.com/view/yggt2024. The closing date is *19th January
2024*. We would encourage you to pass this information on to any PhD
student, masters student, or postdoc who might be interested in attending,
but who might not be on this mailing list.
YGGT is a series of annual conferences which were initiated in 2012, with
the aim of allowing early-career researchers in geometric group theory from
all over the world to meet, forge new connections and, of course, learn
more about geometric group theory. The 12th edition will take place *from
the 8th to 12th of April 2024* in Bristol, UK.
Best regards,
Alice Kerr, Davide Spriano, Rylee Alanza Lyman, Vladimir Vankov

Oggetto: 4-year PhD position in Differential Topology in Utrecht (Netherlands)
Dear friends and colleagues,
I am advertising a 4-year PhD position in Differential Topology/Geometry in Utrecht University (Netherlands), to start no later than September 2024.
The research project will deal with the classification of geometric structures up to homotopy. More concretely, it will focus on the use of h-principle techniques to classify tangent distributions (although there is room to adapt the concrete goals to the taste of the PhD candidate).
The math department in Utrecht is very nice and lively. A list of members can be found here:
https://utrechtgeometrycentre.nl/members/
The candidate will interact mostly with our Algebraic Topology and Differential Geometry groups.
If this sounds attractive to you, you can apply here:
https://www.uu.nl/en/organisation/working-at-utrecht-university/jobs/phd-po…
The deadline is 8th January 2024. Moreover, feel free to forward this application to potential applicants.
All the best!
Álvaro del Pino

Carə tuttə,
Giovedì 21 Dicembre alle 14.30 in Aula Seminari si terrà il seminario di Marco De Renzi (Université de Montpellier) dal titolo "Algebraic presentation of cobordisms and TQFTs". Di seguito l'abstract.
It has long been known that the category of 2-dimensional cobordisms is freely generated by a commutative Frobenius algebra, the circle. This result allows for a complete classification of TQFTs (Topological Quantum Field Theories) in dimension 2. In this talk I will discuss similar algebraic presentations in dimension 3 and 4 due to Bobtcheva and Piergallini. In both cases, the fundamental algebraic structures are provided by certain Hopf algebras called BPH algebras. I will also present examples of such algebras and the TQFTs they induce. This is a joint work with A. Beliakova, I. Bobtcheva, and R. Piergallini.
Ci troveremo alle 13 in atrio per andare a pranzo.
Le informazioni sui prossimi seminari si trovano sul sito<https://www.dm.unipi.it/categoria-evento/geometry-seminar/>.
Vi aspettiamo!
Buona giornata,
Filippo, Giovanni e Giuseppe

Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to announce a one-year postdoctoral position (Assegno di
Ricerca) in L'Aquila. The position is funded by the PRIN project
"Differential-geometric Aspects of Manifolds via Global Analysis." The
salary is approximately €1450 after taxes, with the possibility of renewal
for a second year.
The research will focus on Riemannian and Complex Geometry and Geometric
Analysis. Topics of particular interest include the geometry of Riemannian
submanifolds whose curvature satisfies specific equations or geometric
properties, their evolution through geometric flows, geometric flows of
Riemannian and Complex manifolds, classifications of geometric structures
on real and complex manifolds, and isoperimetric inequalities on manifolds
and Riemannian submanifolds.

Carə tuttə,
Quaternions and isometries of the hyperbolic 5-space
di cui riporto l'abstract:
It is a well-known fact that the group of orientation-preserving isometries of the hyperbolic n-space is isomorphic to the matrix group SO^+(n,1). When n=2 and n=3, these groups have a "friendlier" description as the 2x2 matrix groups PSL(2,R) and PSL(2,C).
By identifying R^4 with the quaternion algebra H, we will see that something similar happens in the n=5 case: more precisely, we will show that SO^+(5,1) is isomorphic to PSL(2,H) - the space of 2x2 quaternionic matrices with Dieudonné determinant equal to 1.
At the end of the talk, I will give an idea on how these results can be applied to try and understand deformations of complete hyperbolic 3-manifolds (with finite volume) in the 5-dimensional hyperbolic space. This is based on a joint work with Bruno Martelli.
Vi ricordiamo infine che potrete trovare informazioni sui prossimi seminari sul nostro sito https://sites.google.com/view/babygeometri
