Subject: Announcement post doc position in L'Aquila
To:
Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to announce a one-year postdoctoral position (Assegno di
Ricerca) in L'Aquila. The position is funded by the PRIN project
"Differential-geometric Aspects of Manifolds via Global Analysis." The
salary is approximately €1450 after taxes, with the possibility of renewal
for a second year.
The research will focus on Riemannian and Complex Geometry and Geometric
Analysis. Topics of particular interest include the geometry of Riemannian
submanifolds whose curvature satisfies specific equations or geometric
properties, their evolution through geometric flows, geometric flows of
Riemannian and Complex manifolds, classifications of geometric structures
on real and complex manifolds, and isoperimetric inequalities on manifolds
and Riemannian submanifolds.

Carə tuttə,
Quaternions and isometries of the hyperbolic 5-space
di cui riporto l'abstract:
It is a well-known fact that the group of orientation-preserving isometries of the hyperbolic n-space is isomorphic to the matrix group SO^+(n,1). When n=2 and n=3, these groups have a "friendlier" description as the 2x2 matrix groups PSL(2,R) and PSL(2,C).
By identifying R^4 with the quaternion algebra H, we will see that something similar happens in the n=5 case: more precisely, we will show that SO^+(5,1) is isomorphic to PSL(2,H) - the space of 2x2 quaternionic matrices with Dieudonné determinant equal to 1.
At the end of the talk, I will give an idea on how these results can be applied to try and understand deformations of complete hyperbolic 3-manifolds (with finite volume) in the 5-dimensional hyperbolic space. This is based on a joint work with Bruno Martelli.

In this talk I will introduce strongly invertible Legendrian links in the standard contact three-dimensional space. After a short presentation of the equivariant analogues of well-known theorems for both strongly invertible and Legendrian links, e.g. the equivariant Legendrian Reidemeister theorem, I will introduce the maximal equivariant Thurston-Bennequin number.
I will conclude the talk discussing some experimental results and conjectures concerning the maximal equivariant Thurston-Bennequin number.
This is joint work with Paolo Lisca (Università di Pisa).

Every horocycle in a closed hyperbolic surface is dense, which was proved by Hedlund in the 1940's. We study the behavior of horocycle orbit closures in Z-covers of closed surfaces, and obtain a fairly complete classification of their topology and geometry. The main tool is a solution of a surprisingly delicate geometric optimization problem: finding an optimal Lipschitz map to the circle in a given homotopy class and the associated lamination of maximal stretch. I will explain the relationship between these two problems, and if time permits, I will give a novel construction of optimal circle valued Lipschitz maps using the orthogeodesic foliation construction. This is joint work with Yair Minsky and Or Landesberg featuring joint work with Aaron Calderon.
Ci troveremo alle 13 in atrio per andare a pranzo con James.

Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention to two postdoc positions in Oxford that
we are currently advertising:
https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/node/65922https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/node/65923
The first of these is specifically in low-dimensional topology/geometry.
They are 3-year positions with a very light teaching load.
If you know of any good candidates, can you encourage them to apply. The
deadline is 24 November.
Thanks!

To: Barbara Nelli <barbara.nelli(a)univaq.it>
Dear Colleague,
as a board member, I am pleased to inform you about the European School of
Differential Geometry
http://imag.ugr.es/esdg/
that will be held in Granada (Spain) from June 24th to Jully 5th , 2024.
The ESDG has been approved as a Satellite Event of the ECM2024-Sevilla.
The realization of this type of event is essential to maintain the vitality
of Differential Geometry in Europe. The ESDG target audience is focused on
young researchers, as well as Master and Doctoral students involved in the
area of Differential Geometry. The ESDG will encourage the cohesion of the
different research groups in Europe, having significant effects on the
development of Mathematics on the continent. The idea is to create a solid
and resilient event, with a clear projection in the future. The ESDG will
take place every two years, each occasion in a European country.
Students attending the school will have the opportunity to apply for
scholarships. All the information will be available in the school webpage.
Please do not hesitate to ask for additional information.
I would be grateful if you could actively promote the school to attract as
many participants as possible.
Sincerely,
Barbara Nelli
