Matematica) Ergodicity of the mapping class group action on a component of the character variety. Juan Souto (CNRS - Université de Rennes) Abstract: Goldman proved that the variety X_g of conjugacy classes of representations of a surface group of genus g into PSL_2R has 4g-3 connected components X_g(2-2g), ... ,X_g(2g-2) indexed by the Euler number of the representations therein. The two extremal components X_g(2-2g) and X_g(2g-2) correspond to Teichmueller spaces on which the mapping class group acts discretely. On the other hand Goldman conjectured that the action on each one of the other components is ergodic. I will explain why this is indeed the case the component X_g(0) consisting of representations with Eulernumber 0 and for all g>=3. The basic technical result is a formula relating the euler number of a representation and the infimum of the energies of equivariant harmonic maps where the infimum is taken over all maps and all conformal structures on the surface of genus g.

Ciao, Rita %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Seminario di Geometria 8 ottobre, ore 15, Aula magna Ian Morrison (Fordham University) Titolo: The three avatars of log minimal models $\overline{M}_g$ Abstract: The moduli space $\overline{M}_g$ of stable curves of genus $g$ has proven a fruitful test case for general questions from the minimal model program in birational geometry, where its modular interpretation provides extra tools for answering these questions. A paradoxical aspect of this work is that, although the questions deal with the \emph{intrinsic} geometry of $\overline{M}_g$, constructing the models depends on interpreting them as alternate compactifications of $M_g$, and, until very recently, on \emph{extrinsic} constructions of them as GIT quotients. Abstract: This talk will review joint work with David Swinarski over the past year on the first question in the title. Most of the mathematics will be elementary and the talk will be accessible to students at all levels. My main goals are to illustrate how mathematical research projects evolve and to use our work to review strategies that are often useful in tackling them. Along the way, we'll learn about the game of craps itself and touch on ideas from probability, geometry, algebra, number theory and combinatorics. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Giovedi' 25/9, ore 16, sala riunioni Cinzia Casagrande (Universita' di Torino) Titolo: Divisori primi e geometria birazionale nelle varieta' di Fano Abstract: Sia X una varieta' di Fano liscia e complessa, D un divisore primo in X, e sia c(D):=dim ker(r: H^2(X,R)-> H^2(D,R)), dove r e' la mappa di restrizione. Le varieta' di Fano hanno una proprieta' peculiare, per cui la presenza di un divisore D con c(D) "grande" influenza la geometria di X. Piu' precisamente, definiamo: c_X:=max{c(D) | D divisore primo in X}. Allora c_X e' al piu' 8, e se c_X e' almeno 2, otteniamo delle proprieta' speciali di X. Buonasera, questo è l'annuncio di un seminario di studio che io, Paolo Ghiggini e Marco Golla stiamo organizzando per questo semestre. Il nostro obiettivo è quello di capire alcune recenti costruzioni di foliazioni tese su complementari di nodi in S^3 ( http://arxiv.org/abs/1211.3066). Il calendario approssimativo del seminario è attualmente il seguente: Giovedì 25/9, ore 14:15, aula riunioni. Paolo Ghiggini: costruzioni di foliazioni taut su complementari di nodi in S^3.
