The original result, which is due to Cohen and, independently, Grigorchuk, dates back to the 80's: a group Q finitely presented as F/N, where F is a free group, is amenable if and only if the exponential growth rates (or _entropies)_ \omega(N) and \omega(F) of N and F coincide. This is related to Kesten's criterion for amenability, and has been declined in many different ways and different contexts during the years. The most accredited version of the Amenability Problem in the last decade was: given a group G acting properly on a CAT(-1) space X and a normal subgroup N of G, does the equality \omega(N) = \omega(G) imply that the quotient group Q = G/N is amenable? We prove a general version of the amenability conjecture for Gromov word-hyperbolic groups or a cocompact groups of isometries of a CAT(-1)-space. For this, we prove a quantified version of an amenability criterion due to Stadlbauer (generalizing Kesten's Criterion) for group extensions of a topologically transitive subshift of finite type, in terms of the spectral radii of the classical Ruelle transfer operator and its corresponding extension. As a consequence, we are able to show that, in our enlarged context, there is a gap between the entropy of a group with Kazhdan’s property (T) and the entropies of all of its infinite index subgroups. This also generalizes a well-known theorem of Corlette for lattices of the quaternionic hyperbolic space or the Cayley hyperbolic plane. We will try to sketch the overall strategy and give an idea of all the background material needed in the proof (dynamics on hyperbolic groups, Gromov's coding, transfer operator for subshifts of finite type, spectral amenability criterions for group extensions etc). Cari tutti, continuano i seminari dei Baby Geometri! Vi ricordiamo che si tratta di un ciclo di seminari settimanali di geometria su argomenti classici oppure tematiche di ricerca. Ogni seminario prevederà una parte introduttiva del problema affinché il seminario sia apprezzabile da studenti dal terz'anno della Triennale in poi. Vi aspettiamo quindi: Giovedí 22 novembre alle 16:30 presso l'Aula Seminari del Dipartimento di Matematica, dove si terrà il seminario di: Marco Moraschini (Università di Pisa) dal titolo: Why do we care about multicomplexes? di cui riporto l'abstract: Il volume simpliciale è un invariante omotopico per varietà compatte introdotto da Gromov nel 1982 nel suo articolo pionieristico "Volume and bounded cohomology". In parole povere, il volume simpliciale misura la complessità di una varietà in termini delle sue catene singolari reali. L'obiettivo di questo seminario è di descrivere l'idea originaria di Gromov su come affrontare lo studio di questo invariante, ossia attraverso la teoria dei multicomplessi (e la più nota coomologia limitata). I multicomplessi sono una struttura simpliciale che generalizza la nozione di complesso simpliciale. Durante il seminario dopo aver richiamato le definizioni di volume simpliciale e coomologia limitata, introdurremo i concetti principali della teoria dei multicomplessi. In seguito, vedremo attraverso alcuni risultati intermedi come questa teoria ci permetta di mettere in risalto lo stretto legame fra il volume simpliciale (o più precisamente la coomologia limitata) ed il gruppo fondamentale della varietà in questione.Il legame preciso è descritto dal Mapping Theorem di Gromov. Questo seminario si basa su di un lavoro in collaborazione con Roberto Frigerio ed ovviamente sull' articolo originale di Gromov "Volume and bounded cohomology". Cari tutti, anche per quest'anno vi terranno compagnia i seminari dei Baby Geometri. Per i meno esperti di tratta di un ciclo di seminari settimanali di geometria su argomenti classici oppure tematiche di ricerca. Poiché il pubblico é composto prevalentemente da studenti della Laurea Magistrale e di Dottorato, ogni seminario prevederà una parte introduttiva del problema affinché il seminario sia apprezzabile da studenti dal terz'anno della Triennale in poi. Il primo incontro di quest'anno sarà: Giovedí 15 novembre alle 16:30 presso l'Aula Riunioni del Dipartimento di Matematica si terrà il seminario di Michele Pernice (Scuola Normale Superiore) dal titolo: Introduzione alla teoria delle deformazioni di cui riporto l'abstract: "L'obiettivo di questo seminario sarà di introdurre le nozioni basilari di teoria delle deformazioni astratta quali funtori di deformazione, spazio tangente di Schlessinger, famiglie semiuniversali e teorie dell'ostruzione. Matematica) <http://www.dm.unipi.it/webnew/it/aula/sala-seminari-dip-matematica> Short curves in hyperbolic 3-manifolds via knots on Heegaard surfaces <http://www.dm.unipi.it/webnew/it/seminari/short-curves-hyperbolic-3-manifol…> Alessandro Sisto Given a Heegaard splitting of a manifold M, one can consider simple closed curves on the Heegaard surface as elements of its curve graph. I will discuss the result that if some such curve K is far from both disk sets (as measured in the curve graph), then the complement M-K is hyperbolic. Moreover, there is a condition involving subsurface projection that further ensures that M is obtained by long Dehn filling of M-K, yielding that M is hyperbolic and (the geodesic representative of) K is short. If the gluing map of the Heegaard splitting is chosen using a random walk, then with high probability there exists a curve K satisfying the required conditions. Hence, this proves a (Perelman-free) hyperbolisation result for "generic" 3-manifolds, as well as providing information about the injectivity radius. Joint with Peter Feller.
