Dear all, On Thursday, November 2nd, at 15h00 in Aula Dal Passo of Tor Vergata Math Department, RoMaDS (https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~rds/about.php) will host Adriano Barra (Università del Salento) with the seminar "A walk in the statistical mechanics of neural networks” Abstract: Purpose of this talk is twofold: in the first part, I will provide a statistical mechanical picture of shallow networks proving how learning in biological neural networks (e.g. in the Hopfield model) and standard machine learning via gradient descent (e.g. on the Boltzmann machine) ultimately convey the same information after training. This diminishes the gap in our understanding between biological and artificial information processing networks. In the second part of the talk, focusing on a toy model for the sake of simplicity, I will show how recent mathematical techniques, heavily based on Guerra's interpolation, are suitable to describe the emergent properties of this kind of networks. Dear all, We are happy to announce that on Monday, September 25th, at 15h00 in Aula Dal Passo of Tor Vergata Math Department, RoMaDS (https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~rds/about.php) will host Marco Carfagnini (University of California San Diego) with the seminar "Spectral gaps via small deviations” Abstract: In this talk we will discuss spectral gaps of second order differential operators and their connection to limit laws such as small deviations and Chung’s laws of the iterated logarithm. The main focus is on hypoelliptic diffusions such as the Kolmogorov diffusion and horizontal Brownian motions on Carnot groups. If time permits, we will discuss spectral properties and existence of spectral gaps on general Dirichlet metric measure spaces.This talk is based on joint works with Maria (Masha) Gordina and Alexander (Sasha) Teplyaev. 1 Year Post-Doc position in Verona I am looking for a post-doc to join my group. The topic of the research project is "Machine learning and stochastic control for financial risk management” The aim of this project is to study new methods, models, and numerical techniques for the treatment of financial risk management problems, in particular counterparty credit risk (xVA) or the pricing of financial and insurance claims. Many problems in finance involve the minimization of a cost functional subject to controlled stochastic state variables. Controls or related quantities in high dimension can be conveniently approximated by means of artificial neural networks. The aim of the project is to study control problems under general dynamics together with the development of new models for the evolution of risk factors, with a special focus on interest rates. The candidate should have a solid background in probability, stochastic calculus and computational finance. Experience with the Java and/or Python programming languages and Machine Learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Deep Java Library or Deeplearning4J is a plus. Candidates will be evaluated based on their scientific quality and their potential in developing research. There are no teaching obligations and knowledge of Italian is not required. The distinguishing feature of the model is the form of the volatility equation which ensures the solution to be “sandwiched” between two arbitrary functions chosen in advance. Hence the name Sandwiched Volterra Volatility (SVV) model. Targeting option pricing, we discuss the structure of local martingale measures in this market and we develop an algorithm of pricing options with discontinuous payoffs. Our tools rely on the study of Malliavin calculus, indeed the Malliavin differentiability of the equations and prices is studied. With these, we can also study the power law property of the SVV model. The school is organised by CNR IMATI (Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies at the Italian National Research Council in Milano), in cooperation with Fondazione Alessandro Volta. The topic will be BAYESIAN PHYLOGENETIC AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES. The lecturer will be Prof. MARC SUCHARD (Department of Biostatistics, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, USA), with the support of Filippo Monti (PhD student in Biostatistics, UCLA, USA). OUTLINE: The aim of this course is to explore the core challenges of Bayesian inference of stochastic processes in modern biology in terms of data-scale, model-dimensionality and compute-complexity. Challenging and emerging statistical solutions will be illustrated through the analysis of biological sequences, such as genes and genomes. Molecular phylogenetics has become an essential analytical tool for understanding the complex patterns in which rapidly evolving pathogens propagate across and between countries, owing to the complex travel and transportation patterns evinced by modern economies, along with growing political factors such as increased global population and urbanisation. As an accessible course for all, a brief introduction of the underlying biology (for statistical researchers) and of modern Bayesian inference (for practicing biologists) will be also provided. Topics will cover probabilistic modeling techniques using both discrete- and continuous-valued stochastic processes including continuous-time Markov chains and Gaussian processes; large-scale data-integration approaches incorporating factors like human mobility and climate measurements; recursive computing and other mathematical tricks to evaluate seemingly intractable likelihoods; state-of-the-art sampling methods for high-dimensional models including Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and its more recent non-reversible extensions; delivering timely inference on advancing computing hardware like graphics processing units and (maybe even) quantum devices. Il bando è rivolto a giovani di età inferiore a 35 anni e in possesso di Laurea Magistrale in Matematica, Scienze Statistiche, Informatica, Modellistica matematico-fisica per l’ingegneria, Ingegneria Informatica, oppure Fisica. L’attività di ricerca riguarderà lo sviluppo e la validazione di metodi di apprendimento automatico bayesiano e di visualizzazione di dati per la valutazione dei rischi ambientali. We work on an “effectively elliptic” setting, that is we require that the range of the covariance operator contains the unstable directions. We exploit the generalized asymptotic coupling techniques of [1] and [2], used by these authors for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with additive noise. Here, we show how these methods are flexible enough to deal with multiplicative noise as well. A crucial role in our argument is played by the Foias-Prodi estimate in expected value, which has a different form (exponential or polynomial decay) according to the growth condition of the multiplicative noise. It is characterised by the existence of multiple, well separated time scales. The talk will be focused on the metastable behaviour of a general class of mean-field-like spin systems with random couplings that evolve according to a Glauber dynamics at fixed temperature. This class of systems comprises both the Ising model on inhomogeneous dense random graphs and the randomly diluted Hopfield model. Assuming that the corresponding system in which the random couplings are replaced by their averages is metastable I will explain how the metastability of the random system is implied with high probability. In particular, I will discuss the tail behaviour of the relevant metastable hitting times of the two systems and the moments of their ratio. This is joint work with A. Bovier, F. Den Hollander, S. We illustrate it in a variety of settings, showing in particular adaptation with respect to unknown smoothness and structure parameters in the minimax sense (up to logarithmic factors). We present numerical simulations corroborating the theory. Zanco https://sites.google.com/unipi.it/spass -------------------------------------------- *Abstract: **Over-parametrized deep learning models are achieving outstanding performances in solving several complex tasks such as image classification problems, object detection and natural language processing. Despite the risk of overfitting, these parametric models show impressive generalization after training. Hence, defining appropriate complexity measures becomes crucial for understanding and quantifying the generalization capabilities of deep learning models. In this talk, I will introduce a new notion of complexity measure, called two-scale effective dimension (2sED), which is a box-covering dimension related to a metric induced by the Fisher information matrix of the parametric model. I will then show how the 2sED can be used to derive a generalization bound. Furthermore, I present an approximation of the 2sED for Markovian models, called lower 2sED, that can be computed sequentially layer-by-layer with less computational demands. Finally, I present experimental evidence that the post-training performance of given parametric models is related both with 2sED and the lower 2sED.*

We discuss the turbulent dynamics of a two-dimensional quantum fluid of exciton–polaritons, hybrid light–matter quasiparticles, both by measuring the kinetic energy spectrum and showing the onset of vortex clustering. Title: Entropic Selection in Optimal Transport Abstract:The optimal transport problem can admit many solutions, for instance when the cost function is the Euclidean distance on R^d (Monge's problem). On the other hand, entropically regularized optimal transport (EOT) always has a unique optimizer. It is a longstanding open problem whether EOT selects some particular optimal transport coupling in the vanishing regularization limit, and what that coupling would look like. Title: Exponential convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm and Hilbert's projective metric for unbounded functions Abstract: Entropic regularization of optimal transport has found numerous applications in various fields recently. A major reason for this surge in applications is the popularization of Sinkhorn's algorithm to efficiently solve the entropic optimal transport problem numerically. This talk studies the (rate of) convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm. In bounded settings, it is known that Sinkhorn's algorithm converges with exponential rate, which is a consequence of applying a commonly used version of Hilbert's metric corresponding to the cone of all non-negative functions. This talk shows how to define versions of Hilbert's metric so that we can show exponential convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm even in unbounded settings. This is done through the use of cones which are relaxations of the cone of all non-negative functions, in the sense that they include all functions having non-negative integral values when multiplied with certain test functions. Along the way, we establish that kernel integral operators are contractions with respect to suitable versions of Hilbert’s metric, even if the kernel functions are not bounded away from zero. Launched in 2022, BioInference aims to bring together researchers from across statistics and mathematical modelling who work with biological systems, and from all career stages, to foster discussions between the two communities and to prompt collaborations. Call for a postdoc position on the topic “A dynamic analysis of supply-chain networks and their disruption” Supply chains are the intricate networks of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in the production and distribution of goods and services. They are vulnerable to disruptions, which can be caused by a wide range of factors and can have profound consequences. Organizations are increasingly aware of the need to build more resilient supply chains. In the face of disruption, supply chain management is a critical function. A supply chain is modeled as a network whose vertices are firms and whose edges represent their interactions. The network evolves dynamically, and may be affected by sudden disruptions. Many of the existing supply-chain models are static and, when dealing with disruptions, compare pre- and post-shock equilibria. In real life, the effects of disruption take time to spread across the network. Understanding this temporal element is fundamental for taking mitigating actions. The main goal of this project is to study dynamic models of supply-chain disruption. The formal analysis of this phenomenon will use tools from network theory, probability theory, game theory, operations management, optimization, dynamical systems, machine learning, data science. We are looking for a candidate who has a strong expertise in at least one of the above fields. Dear colleagues, I would like to announce that a post-doctoral position is available from February 15th, 2024 (a different date might be arranged), within a research project on universal laws and integrable systems at the Laboratoire Angevin de Recherche en Mathématiques (LAREMA), Université d'Angers. The duration of the post-doctoral position is for 18 months (with possible extension for additional 6 months). Possible topics of research include universality of large time limit distributions of integrable systems, universality of the KPZ equation from microscopic systems, crossover fluctuations for random growth interfaces and systems with several conservation laws.
