SEMINARIO DI PROBABILITA' E FISICA STATISTICA Giovedi' 7 Maggio, ore 14.30 , in Aula B (Dipartimento di Matematica. Univ.La Sapienza, Roma) Speaker: Andrea Puglisi (Istituto dei Sistemi Complessi, Sapienza) Title: Dynamics of an intruder in a granular fluid: from dilute to dense experiments. A single experimental setup is the occasion for a tour into many issues in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. In the experiment, a rotating intruder performs a Brownian-like dynamics under the influence of collisions with a shaken granular media. Dissipations in the form of inelastic collisions and dry tangential friction make the system inherently out of equilibrium. When the granular medium is diluted, the results agree with a Boltzmann-Lorentz description which, in the large mass limit, is well approximated by a Fokker-Planck equation for a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with Coulomb friction. When the intruder is shaped so as to break the symmetry under rotation-inversion, an average drift ("ratchet" or "motor" effect) is observed, with properties depending on the dominant dissipation: friction or inelastic collisions. When the density of the surrounding medium increases, non-Markovian effects appear. The first consequence is a violation of the Einstein relation which - near equilibrium - describes the linear response to a small force provided by an external motor. The analysis of a generalized flctuation-dissipation relation explains the nature of the violation: a joint effect of dissipation and coupling with the dense flid. When the density is increased further and the jamming transition is approached, anomalous diffusion appears in the form of transient cage effects (subdiffusion) and - more surprisingly - superfdiffusion at large times. -- Prof. Alessandra Faggionato Department of Mathematics University La Sapienza Piazzale A. For the academic year 2015/2016 the University of Padova, Italy, offers 15 research fellowships for foreign (non Italian) students to attend Doctoral/International Courses - Deadline: 29 May 2015 - The call for application is available at the following address: http://www.unipd.it/en/node/1053 The announcement concerns a limited number of fully funded grants for foreign (non-Italian) graduate students to be awarded on the basis of qualifications only and requiring no entry examination. The grants include all University and Department fees, full board at the University accommodation and provide an additional personal scholarship of 13.638,47 € per year for a total of 3 years. Doctoral courses presumably start on October 1st, 2015 and will end on September 31st, 2018. Application is to be made following carefully the instructions in the announcement. The aim of this workshop is to promote young female researchers by giving them an opportunity to present their own work, and hear distinguished mathematicians who can inspire them to pursue a fulfilling career in probability. Ciclo di Seminari - Progetto ERC grant PASCAL (Probabilistic and Statistical Techniques for Cosmological Applications) Lunedì 27 aprile - ore 14 - aula D'Antoni Speaker Vlad Bally, Universite' Paris-Est LAMA, INRIA title: Convergence and regularity of probability laws by using an interpolation method Abstract: In a recent paper, Fournier and Printems establish a methodology which allows to rove the absolute continuity of the law of the solution of some stochastic equations with Holder continuous coefficients. This is of course out of reach by using already classical probabilistic methods based on Malliavin calculus. In this context, Debussche and Romito employ some Besov space technics in order to substantially improve the result of Fournier and Printems. In this talk we show that this kind of problem naturally fits in the framework of interpolation spaces: we prove an interpolation inequality which allows to state (and even to slightly improve) the above absolute continuity result. Moreover it turns out that the above interpolation inequality has applications in a completely different framework: we use it in order to estimate the error in total variance distance in some convergence theorems.
