The main achievements concern deep neural networks (i.e., when the model has more than one hidden layer) and hold for bounded and continuous pre-activation functions. However, for deep neural networks fed by a single input, we have results even if the pre-activation is ReLU. When the network is shallow (i.e., there is exactly one hidden layer) the large and moderate principles hold for quite general pre-activations and in an infinite-dimensional setting.Joint work with Barbara Pacchiarotti (Università di Roma Tor Vergata) and Giovanni Luca Torrisi (IAC-CNR).*

The Stochastic Systems Modeling project in São Paulo state, Brazil, is recruiting three post-doctoral research fellows in the fields of Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes. The project is spread across four universities (USP, UNICAMP, UFSCar, UFABC) and includes Drs. Anatoly Yambartsev, Andressa Cerqueira, Cristian F. Coletti, Eduardo Jordão Neves, Élcio Lebensztayn, Fábio P. Machado, Florencia Leonardi, Leonardo T. Rolla, Luiz Renato G. Fontes, Miguel Abadi, Nancy L. Garcia, Pablo A. Gomes, Renato Gava, Sandro Gallo, and Vladimir Belitsky. The main lines of research include percolation and interacting random walks, population dynamics and genetic models, information propagation models, characterizers in dynamical systems and inference, and modeling and inference in complex systems. OWABC evolves into OWABI - Kick off talk October 31st

Dear all, After 5 Seasons of the One World Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) Seminar<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/statistics/news/upcoming-seminars/abcworldsem…>, launched in April 2020 to gather members and disseminate results and innovation during those weeks and months under lockdown, we have now decided to launch a "new" seminar series, the One World Approximate Bayesian Inference (OWABI) Seminar<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/statistics/news/upcoming-seminars/abcworldsem…>, to better reflect the broader interest and scope of this series, which goes beyond ABC. In particular, simulation-based inference and ML related techniques will play a crucial role. The 1st OWABI talk will be given by Ullrich Koethe<https://hci.iwr.uni-heidelberg.de/vislearn/people/ullrich-koethe/> (University of Heidelberg), who will talk about "Free-form flows for physics-informed generative modeling" on Thursday the 31st October at 11am UK time. Abstract: The talk first introduces a useful categorization of the (sometimes confusing) "generative model zoo" in terms of different change-of-variables formulas. It then shows how normalizing flows, a major architecture for generative neural networks, can be used for simulation-based Bayesian inference in the sciences. Finally, it proposes free-form flows to simplify the incorporation of physical prior knowledge, e.g. rotation and translation invariance or the restriction of the distribution to a manifold, into generative models.
