SPEAKER: Alessandro Zocca AFFILIATION: TU Eindhoven TITLE: Hitting times asymptotics for hard-core interaction on finite graphs and applications to random-access networks ABSTRACT: We consider the hard-core model on finite graphs, which is a stochastic model for particles that dynamically interact in a finite volume subject to hard-core constraints. This model can be used to describe the dynamics of random-access networks, where, due to wireless interference, active users prevent other nearby users from simultaneous activity. In order to gain insight in the network performance and starvation phenomena, we examine the behavior of the first hitting times between maximum-occupancy configurations and mixing times. For this purpose it is convenient to look at the same model in the framework of Friedlin-Wentzell Markov chains with Metropolis transition probabilities. In this context, the high-fugacity regime in which we are interested corresponds to the low-temperature limit and the maximum-occupancy configurations are the stable states of the corresponding energy landscape. We will illustrate how we extended the pathwise approach beyond the classical metastability setting in order to study, for instance, the tunneling time between stable states. For some specific graphs of interest, e.g. grid graphs and triangular grid graphs, we will show by means of a novel combinatorial method how the order-of magnitude of the tunneling time between the two stable states depends on the size of the lattice and on the boundary conditions. After having discussed some applications of our results to random-access networks, we will then focus on the Widom-Rowlison model on finite graphs which, besides providing another example where our generalized framework can be used, is also instrumental to study multi-channel random-access networks. The position is funded by my European project MALIG, "A mathematical approach to the liquid-glass transition". Dear all, here is a short reminder for the winter school on Stochastic Homogenization to be held at the University of Augsburg, Germany, for three full days from February 17 to February 19, 2016. The main course will be given by Felix Otto and additional lectures presented by Scott Armstrong and Antoine Gloria. There will also be a limited number of short contributed talks. The school is intended mainly for PhD students and early stage researchers, but open for everyone. Registration is free, but participants are required to register in advance, for organizational purposes. ******************************************************************* STATISTICS SEMINARS @ COLLEGIO CARLO ALBERTO ******************************************************************* Venerdi 20 Novembre 2015 alle ore 12:00, presso l’Aula Rossa del Collegio Carlo Alberto, Moncalieri (TO), si terra' il seguente seminario: Paul JENKINS (University of Warwick) EXACT SIMULATION OF THE WRIGHT-FISHER DIFFUSION The Wright-Fisher family of diffusion processes is a class of evolutionary models widely used in population genetics, with applications also in finance and Bayesian statistics. Simulation and inference from these diffusions is therefore of widespread interest. However, simulating a Wright-Fisher diffusion is difficult because there is no known closed-form formula for its transition function. In this talk I show how it is possible to simulate exactly from the scalar Wright-Fisher diffusion with general drift, extending ideas based on retrospective simulation. The key idea is to exploit an eigenfunction expansion representation of the transition function. This approach also yields methods for exact simulation from several processes related to the Wright-Fisher diffusion: (i) its moment dual, the ancestral process of an infinite-leaf Kingman coalescent tree; (ii) its infinite-dimensional counterpart, the Fleming-Viot process; and (iii) its bridges.
