PhD position in Bern
by fabio bellini 24 Oct '17

24 Oct '17

A message from Johanna Ziegel and Ilya Molchanov: UNIVERSITY OF BERN (INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE) PhD POSITION in PROBABILITY THEORY Funding from the SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation) is available for a PhD student (3 years) to work on the project `Poisson approximation and extreme values in stochastic geometry' of Prof. Ilya Molchanov and Dr. Matthias Schulte. The focus of this project is on topics such as the Malliavin-Chen-Stein method, extreme values in stochastic geometry, random simplicial complexes and metric measure spaces. The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Matthias Schulte. It is anticipated that the prospective PhD student has a background in mathematics with emphasis on probability theory. The salary will be at the level foreseen by the SNF, see http://www.snf.ch/ SiteCollectionDocuments/allg_doktorierende_d.pdf. There might be a possibility to complement the salary by taking up teaching and statistical consulting duties. The starting date should be as soon as possible or as can be arranged by a mutual agreement. Applications (cover letter, CV, and transcripts from the studies) giving the name and address (postal and e-mail) of an academic referee should be e-mailed as a single file to Prof. Ilya Molchanov ilya.molchanov(a)stat.unibe.ch and Dr. Matthias Schulte matthias.schulte(a)stat.unibe.ch. Applications are considered until the position is filled. Informal e-mail enquiries are welcome. http://www.imsv.unibe.ch

Avviso seminario_Ennio Fedrizzi_Martedì 31 ottobre_ ore 11:00

Avviso di seminario, Università di Trento "Regularization by noise for transport and kinetic equations" Martedì 31 ottobre 2017 *Luogo:* Dipartimento di Matematica, via Sommarive, 14 - Povo (TN) - Aula Seminari "-1" *Ore*: 11.00 - *Relatore: *Ennio Fedrizzi (Applied Mathematical Department, ENSTA ParisTech) *Abstract: *For some differential equations the addition of a carefully chosen, random noise term can produce a regularising effect (e.g. solutions are more regular, or restored uniqueness). I will first mention a few easy examples (ODEs) to introduce some of these regularising mechanisms, then detail two cases where we have regularisation for a PDE: the linear transport equation and a kinetic equation with force term. I will present some classical results for these two equations, related to well-posedness and regularity of solutions, that in the stochastic setting can be obtained under weaker hypothesis. These results are based on a careful analysis of the stochastic characteristics and the regularising properties of some associated parabolic/elliptic PDE. If time allows, I will conclude by introducing a new strategy of proof based on stochastic exponentials and an associated parabolic PDE, which allows to obtain, under even weaker hypothesis, well-posedness for stochastic PDEs in a class of solutions which are only regular in mean. This will be illustrated by an application to the transport equation. *Referente: *Stefano Bonaccorsi

Ricevo e inoltro, nella speranza che possa esser utile. Cordiali saluti, D. Fichera ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Florent KRZAKALA <florent.krzakala(a)ens.fr> Date: 2017-10-20 14:46 GMT+02:00 Subject: Post-doctoral position in data science @ENS Paris "Laplace Chair 2018" To: Florent KRZAKALA <florent.krzakala(a)ens.fr> Dear colleagues We are looking for excellent candidates in ENS for the Laplace Junior Professor Chair in Data Sciences. Please circulate this message as much as possible! Regards Florent ------------------------------ The Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS Paris) invites applications for a Junior Research and Teaching Laplace chair in data science at the postdoctoral level, funded by CFM (Capital Fund Management) and the ENS. The chair is named after Pierre-Simon, marquis de Laplace, who between many accomplishments, was one of the early founders of statistical inference and data science. The Laplace chair aims at recruiting outstanding candidates in all areas of data sciences including theoretical statistics, machine learning, optimization, signal processing, computer science, applied mathematics and statistical physics, or working on applications to other sciences such as physics, biology, medicine, social sciences or economics. Appointments will be for two years with a possible extension for a third year. Salary is competitive and the positions are endowed with travel resources. The successful candidate will carry out research in ENS, with reduced teaching duties which will be adapted. Applications should consist of a single file and be send before December 31th, 2017 by email to laplacechair2018(a)gmail.com. - A cover letter ; - A complete CV including a list of publications ; - A research statement (maximum 4 pages in A4 format) taking into account possible interactions with research groups/faculty within the different department of ENS (Computer science,Mathematics, Physics,Biology, etc.) ; - Three letters of recommendation from senior scientists, to be sent directly by email to laplacechair2018(a)gmail.com. More information about the scientific environnement of this program can be found on the webpage of the Data Science Chair of the ENS at https://data-ens.github.io. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview (video conference) in mid-January 2018.

October 26 from 12:00 to 13:00, Department of Economics and Finance LUISS room 207 viale Romania 32 00197 Roma. Speaker: Sylvain Sorin (IMJ, Université Pierre at Marie Curie) Title: Optimization, learning and games. ``Replicator dynamics: old and new’’ Abstract: We will describe the unilateral version associated to the replicator dynamics and its connection to on-line learning procedures and classical gradient algorithms in discrete and continuous time. We will survey recent results on extensions of this dynamics: regularization functions and variable weights, time average and link to best reply dynamics in games, equilibria and variational inequalities, potential and dissipative games, Hessian Riemannian metrics. ******************************************************* Marco Scarsini Dipartimento di Economia e Finanza LUISS Viale Romania 32 00197 Roma, ITALY URL: http://docenti.luiss.it/scarsini/
