Probabilistic techniques will be derived from the notion of Markov processes interrupted on the attempt to cross the boundary. Analytic techniques will cover generalized operator-valued Mittag-Leffler functions and chronological Feynman-Kac formulas. Special attention will be paid to particular equations: fractional Langevin equations, fractional Cox-Ross-Ingersoll equation. Advanced topics of fractional processes: fractional irregularity, representation results, statistical applications (Part II) We consider several advanced topics concerned with fractional Brownian motion (fBm): the behavior of maximal functionals for small values of Hurst index, integral representations with adapted integrand with respect to fBm, statistical inference for fBm-driven stochastic differential equations. Saleri" VI piano, Dipartimento di Matematica, Politecnico di Milano, si svolgerà il seguente seminario: Relatori Karel Hron e Jitka Machalova, Palacky University Olomouc, Czech Republic Titolo Simplicial splines for representation of density functions Abstract In the context of functional data analysis, probability density functions as non-negative functions are characterized by specific properties of scale invariance and relative scale which enable to represent them with the unit integral constraint without loss of information. On the other hand, all these properties are a challenge when the densities need to be approximated with spline functions, including construction of the respective B-spline basis. The Bayes space methodology of density functions enables to express them as real functions in the standard L2 space using the clr transformation. The resulting functions possess the zero integral constraint. This is a key to propose a new B-spline basis, holding the same property, and consequently to build a new class of spline functions, called simplicial splines, which can approximate probability density functions in a consistent way. The contribution provides also construction of smoothing simplicial splines and possible orthonormalization of the B-spline basis which might be useful in some applications. Finally, a concise analysis using simplicial splines is demonstrated with anthropometric data for the case of simplicial functional principal component analysis. Cari tutti, giovedì 4 aprile, alle ore 14:30, presso la Sala Riunioni del Dipartimento di Matematica (primo piano) dell'Università degli studi di Pisa si terrà il seguente seminario: (Dear all, on Thursday, April 4th, 2:30 PM, the following talk will take place in Sala Riunioni, Dipartimento di Matematica, University of Pisa:) SPEAKER: Giacomo De Palma (University of Copenhagen) TITLE: Random deep neural networks are biased towards simple functions ABSTRACT: We prove that the binary classifiers of bit strings generated by random wide deep neural networks are biased towards simple functions. The simplicity is captured by the following two properties. For any given input bit string, the average Hamming distance of the closest input bit string with a different classification is at least sqrt(n/(2πlog(n))), where n is the length of the string. Moreover, if the bits of the initial string are flipped randomly, the average number of flips required to change the classification grows linearly with n. On the contrary, for a uniformly random binary classifier, the average Hamming distance of the closest input bit string with a different classification is one, and the average number of random flips required to change the classification is two. Our proof is based on the recent breakthrough in machine learning stating that random deep neural networks behave as Gaussian processes. Our results are confirmed by numerical experiments on deep ne ural networks with two hidden layers, and settle the conjecture stating that random deep neural networks are biased towards simple functions. The conjecture that random deep neural networks are biased towards simple functions was proposed and numerically explored in [Valle Pérez et al., arXiv:1805.08522] to explain the unreasonably good generalization properties of deep learning algorithms.
