The position is funded via the DFG Priority Programme 2265 Random Geometric Systems and the research topic will be on the intersection of limit theorems, Stein's method and stochastic geometry. The successful candidate is expected to have a Master's degree in Mathematics or a related field, a good background in probability theory and proficiency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is not required. The position (75%, TV-L 13) is for three years. The starting date should be between June and October 2024. Milano - Bicocca) si terrà il seguente Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano: Prof.ssa Corinna Ulcigrai (Institut für Mathematik - Universität Zürich) "Periodic surfaces and deterministic random walks: dynamics between geometry and probability" Abstract: Many deterministic systems display chaotic features: the stronger the chaotic features, the better the system can be approximated by a probabilistic model, an idea that can be traced back to Boltzmann and explains the success of the branch of dynamical systems known as ergodic theory. In this talk, we will discuss systems that display only 'mild’ chaotic features, such as the geodesic flow on surfaces with a flat geometry or the Ehrenfest model in mathematical physics. Recent breakthroughs in our understanding of the latter model introduced more than a century ago, were made possible by the powerful tools exploiting moduli spaces of surfaces and Teichmueller dynamics, an area which has attracted the work of several Fields medallists. We will in particular highlight some results of probabilistic flavor that can still be proven for these deterministic systems, hidden in the fractal structure of trajectories and the 'deterministic random walks' that describe them. Grazie, Francesca Ieva e Simone Vantini ************************** To whom it may concern, We invite outstanding scholars to express their interest for a 2 years post-doc position at the MOX laboratory of the Department of Mathematics of Politecnico di Milano within the activities of Spoke 3 of the ANTHEM project (AdvaNced Technologies for Human-centrEd Medicine). Requirements We seek candidates with a strong commitment to applied research and the aspiration to contribute to ANTHEM project. Candidates must hold a PhD in statistics, data science, mathematics or related fields, preferably have teaching experience, and a relevant record of publications and/or research projects. Primary attention will be given to profiles showing expertise in coding with R or python. Ideal candidates will show a passionate drive to engage in Politecnico di Milano’s dynamic and stimulating academic environment and contribute to its further development. They will have research experience on Statistics and Data Science and intend to pursue research projects in the field, with a focus on: Statistical Learning, Analysis of Complex Data, Interaction between Bioengineering and Statistics. Activity, Role and Responsibilities The position holders are expected to undertake rigorous and innovative research, publish in high quality international journals, and provide academic assistance or leadership in research activities. They are also expected to contribute to the ANTHEM community at large. The post-doc position is for a two-year fixed-term contract. Appointments are full-time and the salary is competitive (36Keuro/y). Main focus of the project is the analysis of multivariate time series recording vital signals and pollutants exposure through innovative wearable devices. Innovative models and algorithms for multivariate spatially correlated time series will be developed, together with method for estimating their prediction uncertainty based on innovative resampling methods like conformal prediction. About the group The research will be conducted in an interdisciplinary group composed by statisticians, bioengineers and mathematicians, across the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Electronics, Informatics and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano. Saluti Alessandra *Time*: Monday 18 March, 16:00 *Room*: Sala di Consiglio, Department of Mathematics "Guido Castelnuovo", Sapienza University of Rome *Title:* Detecting a late changepoint in the preferential attachment model *Abstract*: Motivated by the problem of detecting a change in the evolution of a network, we consider the preferential attachment random graph model with a time-dependent attachment function. Our goal is to detect whether the attachment mechanism changed over time, based on a single snapshot of the network at time $n$ and without directly observable information about the dynamics. We cast this question as a hypothesis testing problem, where the null hypothesis is a preferential attachment model with a constant affine attachment parameter \delta_0, and the alternative hypothesis is a preferential attachment model where the affine attachment parameter changes from $\delta_0$ to $\delta_1$ at an unknown changepoint time $\tau_n$. For our analysis we assume that the changepoint occurs close to the observation time of the network, which corresponds to the relevant scenario where we aim to detect the changepoint shortly after it has happened. We present two tests based on the number of vertices with minimal degree. The first test assumes knowledge of $\delta_0$, while the second does not. We show that these are asymptotically powerful when $n-\tau_n \gg n^{1/2}$. Furthermore, we prove that the test statistics for both tests are asymptotically normal, allowing for accurate calibration of the tests. PROBABILITY AND MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS FOR LIVING ENVIRONMENT AND METROLOGY Probability Theory and Statistics provide powerful tools for the development of new mathematical models to describe real life phenomena. In particular, the use of metrology refers to living environment plays an important role in many applicative fields to understand and identify sources of variability and to minimise their influence. Best regards, Lorenzo Tamellini =================================== Dear colleagues, we are happy to announce a new edition of the FrontUQ-Workshop that will be held in Braunschweig from September 24-27, 2024 with the topic "Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) for Aerospace Engineering". FrontUQ is a workshop of the GAMM-UQ activity group and the 2024 edition will be jointly organized by groups of TU Braunschweig, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the German Aerospace Center. Our goal is to allow for an informal and fruitful exchange between the uncertainty quantification and aerospace communities. The first day puts special emphasis on UQ software, with multiple UQ software projects presenting themselves in hands-on tutorials. The following days will host various keynote as well as technical presentations and provide the chance to (re)connect with new and old colleagues. The appointment is funded through the PRIN project "Gradient flows and Non-Smooth Geometric Structures with Applications to Optimization and Machine Learning", and it will focus on several topics of the project: optimal transport, geometric and non-smooth analysis, variational methods for evolution equations, and their possible applications to Machine Learning and optimization. This is a research-oriented position at DIMA (department of mathematics), in MaLGa (Machine Learning Genoa Center). The expected gross salary is of €27.133 per annum.
