%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

SPASS seminar: Patrick Charbonneau
by Andrea Agazzi 15 Mar '24

15 Mar '24

Dear Colleagues, We would like to invite you to the following SPASS seminar, jointly organized by UniPi, SNS, UniFi and UniSi: *Toward a robust definition of random close packing* by Patrick Charbonneau (Duke University) The seminar will take place on TUE, 19.03.2024 at 14:30 CET (*please note the unusual time*) in Aula Seminari, Dipartimento di Matematica, UNIPI and streamed online at this link <https://meet.google.com/gji-phwo-vbg>. The organizers, A. Agazzi, G. Bet, A. Caraceni, F. Grotto, G. Zanco https://sites.google.com/unipi.it/spass -------------------------------------------- *Abstract: **The apparent simplicity of amorphous sphere packings can be misleading. Although jamming hard spheres to random close packing (rcp) has been studied for decades, an unambiguous definition of rcp, let alone a first-principle prediction remain elusive. Drawing inspiration from liquid state theory, rcp can be identified with the inherent structure of a hard sphere liquid. Identifying inherent structures of hard spheres through optimization, however, is a non-trivial problem. Motivated by a recent (meta-)analysis of existing algorithms, we consider the behavior of minimal models of jamming that can be studied using various approaches, notably with tools from stochastic geometry and the mean-field description of simple glasses. The resulting insights present a path toward formalizing rcp.*

by Lorenzo Taggi 14 Mar '24

14 Mar '24

*Title: *Introduction to Random Geometry *Abstract:* This course wants to give an overview of active research topics in the field of Random Geometry, with a focus on growth models. We will start by discussing discrete growth models such as the Eden model, Diffusion Limited Aggregation and Internal DLA. We will then move to the continuum for the remaining part of the course. After discussing conformal invariance of Brownian motion, we will focus on the class of randomly growing domains on the complex plane which can be described via Loewner dynamics. We will introduce several random aggregation models on the complex plane, which go under the name of Hastings-Levitov models and Aggregate Loewner Evolutions, of which we will study the large-scale features, presenting existing results and several open questions. *Keywords:* Random growth models, Diffusion Limited Aggregation, Schramm-Loewner Evolutions, Hastings-Levitov, Aggregate Loewner Evolutions. *Prerequisites:* The course will be as self-contained as possible. However, basic notions of Probability and Analysis are necessary. Some knowledge of complex analysis, martingale theory and stochastic calculus is desirable but not required. *Duration:* 20 hours (10 lectures of 2 hours each) *Class schedule:* The lectures will take place in Room G, Dipartimento di Matematica G. Castelnuovo, 13:00-15:00 in the following dates: Monday 18/3 Wednesday 20/3 Friday 22/3 Monday 25/3 Wednesday 27/3 Tuesday 2/4 Wednesday 3/4 Monday 8/4 Wednesday 10/4 Friday 12/4

Politecnico di Milano - MOX Colloquia - Simon Wood - ore 14
by Laura Maria Sangalli 14 Mar '24

14 Mar '24

On Neighbourhood Cross Validation Abstract: Cross validation is a well known method for estimating hyperparameters in complex regression models. It comes in many varieties, but some of the more interesting flavours require multiple model fits with consequently high cost. This talk shows how the high cost can be side-stepped for a wide range of models estimated using a quadratically penalized smooth loss, with rather low approximation error. Once the computational cost has the same leading order as a single model fit, it becomes feasible to efficiently optimize the chosen cross-validation criterion with respect to multiple smoothing/precision parameters. Interesting applications include cross-validating smooth additive quantile regression models, and the use of leave-out-neighbourhood cross validation for dealing with nuisance short range autocorrelation. The link between cross validation and the jackknife can be exploited to obtain reasonably well calibrated uncertainty quantification in these case.
