*Target audience*
Researchers in the area of data science, machine learning, statistics, and
related fields. Master students with basic skills in machine learning and
statistics are also welcome. PrefStat aims to provide participants with a
solid foundation in preference learning, and to equip them with the skills
and knowledge necessary to apply these methods to real-world problems.
*Course description*
The PrefStat summer school is a high-level course on cutting-edge topics in
the specific context of Statistical Learning from Preference Information,
or Preference Learning. The course is designed to provide a comprehensive
overview of preference statistics, a rapidly growing field that has gained
significant attention in recent years due to the numerous application
fields involving human preferences: recommender systems, Large Language
Models, surveys and psychological experiments, marketing, economics, and
political science. Preference learning is concerned with all data analyses
involving preferences, rankings, ratings, clicking, or any kind of ordinal
data. It entails modeling experiments involving a set of assessors
(experts, judges, users) who express order relations about a set of items,
thus being a subfield of both supervised and unsupervised statistical
learning.
The school provides a deep introduction to the topic and insight into more
challenging tasks that are of interest in modern applications, such as
handling partial, unstructured, exogenous information, individual
preference prediction, and importance feature selection. PrefStat 2025
combines lectures delivered by internationally leading scholars on the
specific designated topic and supervised practical tutorials.

Our next speaker is Ayush Bharti (Aalto University), who will talk about "Cost-aware simulation-based inference ", with an abstract reported below.

Abstract: Simulation-based inference (SBI) is the preferred framework for estimating parameters of intractable models in science and engineering. A significant challenge in this context is the large computational cost of simulating data from complex models, and the fact that this cost often depends on parameter values. We therefore propose cost-aware SBI methods which can significantly reduce the cost of existing sampling-based SBI methods, such as neural SBI and approximate Bayesian computation. This is achieved through a combination of rejection and self-normalised importance sampling, which significantly reduces the number of expensive simulations needed. Our approach is studied extensively on models from epidemiology to telecommunications engineering, where we obtain significant reductions in the overall cost of inference.

The 2025 edition of the Kolmogorov Meets Turing

The goal of this workshop is offering a multidisciplinary perspective of
recent research directions in different areas, including applied
probability, discrete mathematics, game theory, and theoretical computer

il gatto ci spia ma il collasso ci protegge*
Sommario
Oltre alla fisica e alla matematica, la Meccanica Quantistica ha
rivoluzionato le esistenze degli uomini e delle donne, rendendo possibili
dispositivi prima impensabili: le invenzioni del transistor, del laser e
del led sono tre dei passaggi chiave della cosiddetta “rivoluzione
tecnologica quantistica”.
Oggi siamo alla vigilia della seconda rivoluzione, che sarà segnata dalla
realizzazione del computer quantistico e di altre nuove tecnologie. Una
novità della seconda rivoluzione è che essa si realizzerà nel segno della
semplicità: invece di essere sistemi composti da molte particelle, i nuovi
dispositivi sfrutteranno le caratteristiche quantistiche delle singole
particelle. Siccome è proprio nei sistemi semplici che entra in gioco la
stranezza del mondo quantistico, la progettazione delle nuove tecnologie
sta riaprendo il dibattito sulla visione del mondo che origina dalla
meccanica quantistica.
Esploreremo alcune delle questioni filosofiche ritornate di attualità,
anche alla luce delle applicazioni a una scienza ormai pervasiva quanto
necessaria: la crittografia.

Mean-Field Games, Transport, and Optimization in Self-Organized Systems and Machine Learning

The research project will concern:
the integration of mean-field game theory, calculus of variations and collective dynamics of interacting agents, even in the presence of random perturbations. The development, through optimal transport tools and stochastic analysis, of numerical and machine learning models for the geometric analysis of high-dimensional data distributions and applications in neural networks and reinforcement learning is planned.
The project is funded by the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research (MUR) under D.D. 47/2025, as part of the PNRR program:

The position is labelled as MATH-03/A (Mathematical Analysis);

Titolo: Discrete geometric structure of large-scale interacting systems
Abstract.
In this talk, we explore large-scale interacting systems that explain
macroscopic phenomena through the movement of microscopic particles. These
systems are modeled by discrete lattices where microscopic dynamics occur
and the transitions between adjacent sites, referred to as “interactions”
in our definition. We classify interactions based on conserved quantities,
which reflect macroscopic properties, and introduce wedge sums and box
products as methods to construct new interactions from existing ones. We
also present a discrete harmonic theory for large-scale interacting systems
on discrete lattices with finite local state sets. By assuming exchangeable
interactions, we define the inverse harmonic period matrix, which we expect
to correspond to the diffusion matrix in the hydrodynamic limit. Our result
offers an interpretation of the diffusion matrix based on the geometry of
the microscopic model. Founded by the European Union - Next Generation EU.
