Alberto Chiarini e Sonia Mazzucchi %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% RELATORI: Giuseppe Cannizzaro (University of Warwick) e Fabio Toninelli (Technical University of Vienna) TITOLO: Teorema del Limite Centrale superdiffusivo per l'equazione di Burgers stocastica alla dimensione critica RIASSUNTO: L'equazione di Burgers Stocastica (EBS) è stata introdotta da van Beijren, Kutner and Spohn per modellizzare sistemi diffusivi asimmetrici con una singola quantità conservata (e.g. il modello di esclusione semplice asimmetrico). Nella dimensione sub-critica d=1, EBS coincide con la derivata dell'equazione KPZ il cui comportamento a grandi scale è superdiffusivo con crescita polinomiale e le cui fluttuazioni coincidono con il KPZ Fixed Point, mentre nelle dimensioni super-critiche d>2, è diffusivo e converge a un'equazione del calore stocastica anisotropica. Alla dimensione critica, è stato congetturato che la EBS sia superdiffusiva con crescita logaritmica con un esponente preciso ma ciò è stato mostrato solo modulo correzioni di ordine inferiore. Il presente seminario è basato su un lavoro assieme a Quentin Moulard https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.00344, in cui indentifichiamo la superdiffusività e deriviamo le asintotiche della matrice di diffusione in modo esatto. Inoltre, dimostriamo che nel limite di scala corretto, ovvero che tiene presente della crescita logaritmiche alla diffusività, la soluzione di EBS soddisfa un teorema del limite centrale. Il nostro è il primo limite di scala superdiffusivo per un'equazione alle derivate parziali stocastica critica, al di là dell'ambito di applicabilità della teoria delle strutture di regolarità di Hairer. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

The main achievements concern deep neural networks (i.e., when the model has more than one hidden layer) and hold for bounded and continuous pre-activation functions. However, for deep neural networks fed by a single input, we have results even if the pre-activation is ReLU. When the network is shallow (i.e., there is exactly one hidden layer) the large and moderate principles hold for quite general pre-activations and in an infinite-dimensional setting. Joint work with Barbara Pacchiarotti (Università di Roma Tor Vergata) and Giovanni Luca Torrisi (IAC-CNR). 2. Our algorithm learns the value function on the whole Wasserstein domain, as opposed to a fixed initial condition. We leverage the approximation of the mean field problem by a finite-player cooperative optimization problem, due to the propagation of chaos, together with the usage of finite-dimensional solvers. This avoids the need to directly approximate functions on an infinite-dimensional domain, and allows for more efficient memory usage and faster computation times. Vi aspettiamo numerosi! Orderings of the item set are permutations that reflect strict preferences. However, strict preference relations can be unrealistic for real data. In large item sets, assessors might prioritise certain items, rank others low, and express indifference towards the remaining. Rank aggregation may involve decisive judgments in some parts and ambiguity in others. In this talk, we extend the famous Mallows (Mallows, 1957) model (MM) to accommodate item indifference. Grouping similar items motivates the proposed Clustered Mallows Model (CMM), a MM counterpart for tied ranks with ties learned from the data. The CMM provides the flexibility to combine strictness and indifferences, describing rank collections as ordered clusters. Bayesian inference for the CMM is a doubly-intractable problem since the normalised model is unavailable. We overcome this with a version of the exchange algorithm (Murray et al.,2006) and provide a pseudo-likelihood approximation as a computationally cheaper alternative. We are pleased to announce the PhD course "Mathematical Climate Finance", held by Prof. Andrea Macrina (Department of Mathematics, University College London) The course is organized by the Doctoral Program in Mathematical Sciences, under the framework "Shaping a World-Class University" of the University of Padova --------------------- Outline This is an introduction to mathematical climate finance by in-depth treatment of some of the recent advances in this burgeoning field of research in financial mathematics. The focus will be on climate transition risk that, together with physical risk, is a major source of climate change risk impacting economies and financial markets. The mathematics, especially the formulation and modelling aspects, on which climate finance is based, is at the core of this course. The aim is thus the study and development of climate finance anchored in financial mathematics. Mathematical climate finance is an active area of research, and this course aims at keeping up- to-date with new insights and ongoing research progress in academia and the industry. Abstract: Simulation-based inference (SBI) is the preferred framework for estimating parameters of intractable models in science and engineering. A significant challenge in this context is the large computational cost of simulating data from complex models, and the fact that this cost often depends on parameter values. We therefore propose cost-aware SBI methods which can significantly reduce the cost of existing sampling-based SBI methods, such as neural SBI and approximate Bayesian computation. This is achieved through a combination of rejection and self-normalised importance sampling, which significantly reduces the number of expensive simulations needed. Our approach is studied extensively on models from epidemiology to telecommunications engineering, where we obtain significant reductions in the overall cost of inference. Abstract: With the recent reform of interest rate benchmarks, interbank offered rates (IBORs) like LIBOR have been replaced by risk-free rates (RFRs), such as the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) in the U.S. and the Euro Short-Term Rate (€STR) in Europe. These rates exhibit characteristics like jumps and spikes that correspond to specific market events, driven by regulatory and liquidity constraints. To capture these characteristics, this paper considers a general short-rate model that incorporates discontinuities at fixed times with random sizes. Within this framework, we introduce a PDE-based approach for pricing interest rate derivatives. For affine models, we derive (quasi) closed-form solutions, while for the general case, we develop numerical methods to solve the resulting PDEs. (Joint work with A. Calvia, C. Guardasoni, S. We are pleased to announce the PhD course "Theoretical Foundations of Machine Learning" ( https://tinyurl.com/2s3jtfnp) The course is organized by MaLGa - Machine Learning Genoa Center, as part of the ELLIS Genoa unit activities, and is taught by Ernesto De Vito, Lorenzo Rosasco, and Silvia Villa. The objective of the course is to introduce the mathematical framework and key foundational results in Machine Learning Theory. In particular, the course will present the statistical learning theory framework with empirical risk minimization and regularization as guiding principles for algorithm design. Linear and nonlinear models will be discussed, including neural networks and kernel methods (reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces). The course will cover optimization aspects, discussing and analyzing stochastic gradient methods and backpropagation. Additionally, it will cover the error analysis of different algorithms, considering both statistical and approximation theory aspects. They are defined on the d-dimensional lattice Z^d using a group of matrices of dimension N, and Wilson loop expectations are the fundamental observables of these theories. Recently, Cao, Park, and Sheffield showed that Wilson loop expectations can be expressed as sums over certain embedded bipartite maps of any genus. Building on this novel approach, we prove in the so-called strongly coupled regime: - A rigorous formula in terms of embedded bipartite planar maps of Wilson loop expectations in the large N limit, in any dimension d. - An exact computation of Wilson loop expectations in the large N limit, in dimension d=2, for a large family of (simple and non-simple) loops. Previous results to the two aforementioned points were previously established by Chatterjee (2019) and Basu & Ganguly (2016), respectively. Our results extend these previous results, offer simpler proofs and provide a new perspective on these significant quantities. Zanco https://sites.google.com/unipi.it/spass *---------------------------------------------------------* *Abstract: * The mathematical problem of homogenization typically involves studying the effective parameters of a system that exhibits rapid variations in its spatial characteristics. However, we focus on a stochastic multivariate homogenization problem of a different kind: the diffusion in the presence of narrowly located semipermeable interfaces. In simple words, our model reminds of a foiled composite material consisting of a media interlaced with very thin plates of different permeability. In material science such models are referred to as reinforced materials like a glass wool reinforced by aluminium foil. Usually, one is interested in the effective parameters of such a system. By combining the study of stochastic differential equations with local times and homogenization, we explore how the presence of interfaces can alter the diffusion behavior of the limit process. As a byproduct of our research, we obtain theorems for the existence and uniqueness of solutions to SDEs for multidimensional diffusion processes with membranes. Uniqueness is a problem of particular interest because it implies the strong Markov property of the solution, which is essential for the proof of convergence.

However, much of this attention and success has been focused on the discrete-time setting. RL for continuous-time systems, despite its natural applicability to a wide range of control tasks in physical systems, remains largely unexplored with limited progress. In particular, characterizing the sample efficiency of continuous-time RL algorithms continues to be a challenging and open problem. In this talk, we introduce a principled framework for systematically analyzing regret bounds for continuous-time RL algorithms in episodic model-based settings. Our framework decomposes the regret analysis into two fundamental components: the finite-sample accuracy of model estimation and the performance gap of a greedy policy derived from the estimated models. The finite-sample accuracy is analyzed using filtering theory and concentration inequalities for correlated observations, while the performance gap is quantified by leveraging the robustness of the control problem. They are thus likelihood-free, extremely fast to evaluate, and amenable to rapid uncertainty quantification, while also (approximately) inheriting the appealing large-sample properties of Bayes estimators. Neural Bayes estimators are therefore ideal to use with spatial extremes models observed in high dimensions, where estimation is often a computational bottleneck. In this seminar, I will summarize our research progress in that area and explain how, for any spatial model that can be simulated from, a single neural Bayes estimator can be trained to make fast inference with new data that involve varying sample sizes, varying spatial configurations of observed locations, and varying censoring levels used in peaks-over-threshold modeling. This methodology will be illustrated by application to sea surface temperature extremes over the Red Sea, and air pollution extremes over the whole Arabic peninsula. Joint work with Jordan Richards, Matthew Sainsbury-Dale, and Andrew Zammit-Mangion. TALK 1 Alexandre Stauffer (King's College London) “Non-monotone phase transition in interacting particle systems” In this talk we will discuss a reaction-diffusion particle system which has a non-monotone phase transition. I will explain the techniques used to analyze monotone models and how they can be refined to analyze non-monotone particle systems. Based on upcoming works with Leandro Chiarini and Tom Finn. TALK 2 Jacopo Borga (MIT) “Lattice Yang-Mills theory in the large N limit via sums over surfaces" Abstract: Lattice Yang-Mills theories are important models in particle physics. They are defined on the d-dimensional lattice Z^d using a group of matrices of dimension N, and Wilson loop expectations are the fundamental observables of these theories. Recently, Cao, Park, and Sheffield showed that Wilson loop expectations can be expressed as sums over certain embedded bipartite maps of any genus. Building on this novel approach, we prove in the so-called strongly coupled regime: - A rigorous formula in terms of embedded bipartite planar maps of Wilson loop expectations in the large N limit, in any dimension d. - An exact computation of Wilson loop expectations in the large N limit, in dimension d=2, for a large family of (simple and non-simple) loops. Previous results to the two aforementioned points were previously established by Chatterjee (2019) and Basu & Ganguly (2016), respectively. Our results extend these previous results, offer simpler proofs and provide a new perspective on these significant quantities. This work is a collaboration with Sky Cao and Jasper Shogren-Knaak.

RIASSUNTO: Il modello di pinning è un modello elementare della meccanica statistica che presenta una transizione di (de)localizzazione. Questo modello è stato molto considerato nella letteratura fisica e biofisica poiché emerge naturalmente nella modellizzazione di una varietà di fenomeni e perché, in assenza di disordine, è esattamente risolubile. In termini matematici il modello di pinning è una misura di Gibbs con potenziali a un corpo basata su un processo di rinnovo discreto. Nella prima parte del seminario introduciamo il modello e presentiamo lo stato dell’arte sull’effetto del disordine, esponendo anche alcuni progressi recenti e menzionando alcuni problemi aperti. Nella seconda parte discutiamo invece delle varianti del modello di pinning in cui la densità dell’insieme dei punti di rinnovo è imposta al sistema tramite condizionamento o tramite dei potenziali aggiunti al modello: questo tipo di modelli è stato proposto in biofisica per lo studio del DNA circolare. In questo contesto una nuova fase, intermedia tra la fase localizzata e quella delocalizzata, appare, almeno in assenza di disordine. La comparsa di questa nuova fase è una versione di un fenomeno ben noto in probabilità, dove una singola variabile è responsabile delle grandi fluttuazioni della somma di tante sue copie (« big jump phenomenon »). La presenza del disordine ha un effetto molto drastico su questa fase: spieghiamo infatti che la fase intermedia non esiste se introduciamo del disordine, anche debole. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% I seminari PRISMA hanno un formato di "colloquium" per creare un'occasione di scambio e discussione con tutta la comunità dei probabilisti e statistici italiani. Buongiorno a tutti, Vorremmo segnalarvi che venerdì prossimo (7 Febbraio) in aula 2BC60 (Torre Archimede, Università di Padova) ci sarà un seminario per il ciclo di seminari in Probabilità e Finanza di: Paul Nikolaev (Università di Padova) Title: Mean Field Limit for Stochastic Particle Systems With and Without Common Noise: An Analysis of Singular Interactions Date: February 7, 2025, at 14:00, room 2BC60 Abstract: We investigate systems driven by idiosyncratic noise, as well as those influenced by both idiosyncratic and common noise, the latter being particularly relevant in fields such as biology and finance. For both types of systems, we establish mean-field limit results. Our primary objective is to address interaction kernels with low regularity, thereby extending the classical Lipschitz framework. This includes applications to attractive Keller–Segel models, opinion dynamics, and general sub-Coulomb-type kernels. Our approach utilizes techniques from PDE's, such as relative entropy methods. The moderate interaction regime is a scale introduced by Oelschläger in the 80s, and it lies between the mean field and the nearest neighbor interaction regimes. We prove that the (mollified) empirical process converges to the solution of the nonlinear stochastic Fokker-Planck equation. The proof is based on Itô’s formula for the norm of a H^1_q-valued process, commutator estimates, and some estimations for the regularization of the empirical measure. Joint work with C.
