Dear all, On Wednesday, February 5th, at 14h00 in Aula Dal Passo of Tor Vergata Math Department, RoMaDS <https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~rds/events.php> will host Stefano Favaro (Università di Torino) with the seminar “A smoothed-Bayesian approach to frequency recovery from sketched data” Abstract: We introduce a novel statistical perspective on a classical problem at the intersection of computer science and information theory: recovering the empirical frequency of a symbol in a large discrete dataset using only a compressed representation, or sketch, obtained via random hashing. Departing from traditional algorithmic approaches, recent works have proposed Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) methods that can provide more informative frequency estimates by leveraging modeling assumptions on the distribution of the sketched data. In this paper, we propose a smoothed-Bayesian method, inspired by existing BNP approaches but designed in a frequentist framework to overcome the computational limitations of the BNP approaches when dealing with large-scale data from realistic distributions, including those with power-law tail behaviors. For sketches obtained with a single hash function, our approach is supported by frequentist guarantees, including unbiasedness and optimality under a squared error loss function within a class of linear estimators. For sketches with multiple hash functions, we introduce an approach based on multi-view learning to construct computationally efficient frequency estimators. We validate our method on synthetic and real data, comparing its performance to that of existing alternatives. RIASSUNTO: Il modello di pinning è un modello elementare della meccanica statistica che presenta una transizione di (de)localizzazione. Questo modello è stato molto considerato nella letteratura fisica e biofisica poiché emerge naturalmente nella modellizzazione di una varietà di fenomeni e perché, in assenza di disordine, è esattamente risolubile. In termini matematici il modello di pinning è una misura di Gibbs con potenziali a un corpo basata su un processo di rinnovo discreto. Nella prima parte del seminario introduciamo il modello e presentiamo lo stato dell’arte sull’effetto del disordine, esponendo anche alcuni progressi recenti e menzionando alcuni problemi aperti. Nella seconda parte discutiamo invece delle varianti del modello di pinning in cui la densità dell’insieme dei punti di rinnovo è imposta al sistema tramite condizionamento o tramite dei potenziali aggiunti al modello: questo tipo di modelli è stato proposto in biofisica per lo studio del DNA circolare. In questo contesto una nuova fase, intermedia tra la fase localizzata e quella delocalizzata, appare, almeno in assenza di disordine. La comparsa di questa nuova fase è una versione di un fenomeno ben noto in probabilità, dove una singola variabile è responsabile delle grandi fluttuazioni della somma di tante sue copie (« big jump phenomenon »). La presenza del disordine ha un effetto molto drastico su questa fase: spieghiamo infatti che la fase intermedia non esiste se introduciamo del disordine, anche debole. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

With a fixed sampling method for obtaining field samples, we identify the location and intensity of aliases in the frequency domain for the harmonic coefficients in the Fourier decomposition of the random field and assess the impact of aliasing errors on the angular power spectrum. Title: Quasi-Bayes empirical Bayes: a sequential approach to the Poisson compound decision problem. Abstract: The Poisson compound decision problem is a classical problem in statistics, for which parametric and nonparametric empirical Bayes methodologies are available to estimate Poisson's means in static or batch domains. We study the Poisson compound decision problem in a streaming or online domain, where a timely analysis can enhance decision-making and responsiveness to new information, especially for data arriving at high-velocity. By relying on a quasi-Bayesian sequential (learning) model for the data, often referred to as Newton's algorithm, we obtain sequential Poisson's mean estimates that are of easy evaluation, computationally efficient and with a constant computational cost as data increase, which is desirable for streaming data. Large sample asymptotic properties of the proposed estimates are investigated, also providing frequentist guarantees in terms of a regret analysis. We validate empirically our methodology, both on synthetic and real data, comparing against the most popular alternatives. Joint work with Sandra Fortini (Bocconi University). In the simplest context of distributions on the real line, we show how one can define and compute a Fréchet least squares estimator of the regression map, which attains the minimax convergence rate under minimal assumptions. We also discuss possible extensions to higher dimensional laws and to autoregressive settings, and how these seem to require additional smoothness conditions for consistent estimation. Mercoledì *5 febbraio *alle ore *14.30, *Simone Baldassarri (Mathematical Institute Leiden University) terrà il seminario dal titolo “*Opinion dynamics on dense dynamic random graphs*”. Abstract: Describing the evolution of dynamic networks together with dynamic processes running on them constitutes a major challenge in network science. Despite considerable efforts in past years, and notable progress on an intuitive and approximative level, our mathematical understanding of such systems is still in its infancy. The focus of this talk will be two-opinion voter models on dense dynamic random graphs. The goal is to understand and describe the occurrence of consensus versus polarisation over long periods of time. The former means that all vertices have the same opinion, the latter means that the vertices split into two communities with different opinions and few disagreeing edges. We consider three models for the joint dynamics of opinions and graphs: one with one-way feedback and two with two-way feedback. In the first model only coexistence is attainable, meaning that both opinions survive, but with the presence of many disagreeing edges. In the second model only consensus prevails, while in the third model polarisation is possible. Key results cover functional laws of large numbers for the densities of the two opinions, functional laws of large numbers for the dynamic random graphs in the space of graphons, and a characterisation of the limiting densities in terms of Beta-distributions. The school is organized by CNR IMATI (Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies at the Italian National Research Council in Milano), in cooperation with the Department of Mathematics of the University of Genova. The aim of EE is to understand the adverse health effects of environmental hazards and to estimate the risks associated with those hazards. Such risks have traditionally been assessed either over time at a fixed point in space or over space at a fixed point in time. ST modelling characterizes the distribution of those hazards and associated risks over both geographical locations and time. Understanding variation and exploiting dependencies over both space and time greatly increases the power to assess those relationships. The course will cover a wide range of topics from an introduction to spatio-temporal and epidemiological principles along with the foundations of ST modeling, with specific focus on their application, to new directions for research. How can one condition the two-dimensional simple random walk (2D-SRW), which is well known to be recurrent, on not hitting the origin ? This question will be answered by defining rigorously the 2D-SRW conditioned to avoid the origin. I will then discuss some of its surprising properties and present results concerning its speed of escape towards infinity. I will also present the random interlacements model build upon the conditioned 2D-SRW, which was introduced by the aforementioned coauthors (together with Marina Vachkovskaia) in 2015. I will discuss some properties of this model : FKG inequality, 0-1 law, phase transition and behavior at criticality. During the talk, I will also evoke the continuous counterparts of these processes, namely : the two-dimensional Brownian motion conditioned to avoid the unit ball and the two-dimensional random interlacements. Monday, 27 January 2025, 16.00-17.00 Seminar room, third floor, building 14, Via Bonardi 9, Milano (Leonardo Campus) Adrien Mathieu (Oxford University) Title: Market Making with fads, Informed and Uninformed traders. Abstract: We characterize the solutions to a continuous-time optimal liquidity provision problem in a market populated by informed and uninformed traders. In our model, the asset price exhibits fads -- these are short-term deviations from the fundamental value of the asset. Conditional on the value of the fad, we model how informed traders and uninformed traders arrive in the market. The market maker knows of the two groups of traders but only observes the anonymous order arrivals. We study both the complete information and the partial information versions of the control problem faced by the market maker. In such frameworks, we characterize the value of information, and we find the price of liquidity as a function of the proportion of informed traders in the market. Lastly, for the partial information setup, we explore how to go beyond the Kalman-Bucy filter to extract information about the fad from the market arrivals. Abstract: Probabilistic mixture and multilevel models are central building blocks in Bayesian data analysis. However, they remain challenging to estimate and evaluate, especially when the involved likelihoods or priors are analytically intractable. Recent developments in generative deep learning and simulation-based inference have shown promising results in scaling up Bayesian inference through amortization. Against this background, we have developed specialized neural inference frameworks for estimating Bayesian mixture and multilevel models. The involved neural architectures are closely mirroring the probabilistic symmetries and conditional (in-)dependencies assumed by these models. This not only speeds up neural network training, but also enables amortized inference for new datasets of varying number of groups and sample sizes. This research training group is sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for up to 9 years, with approximately one million euro per year. We have successfully hired a first cohort of students in 2023, and we are now looking forward to the second cohort. The positions are fully funded, at competitive levels (approx 43.000 Euro gross per year). The RTG is an initiative of ten principal investigators from the Center for Mathematical Economics and the Data Science Research Group at Bielefeld University. The position is a fixed-term six-year position (RTT). During the first three years, the Department will offer a salary top-up of 20.000 EUR per annum. If the researcher receives the National Scientific Habilitation (ASN), starting from the fourth year it is possible to convert the position into a tenured associate professor one. As for the time-change we consider a general increasing stochastic process with finitely many jumps. To tackle this problem we present change of variable formulas for stochastic integrals w.r.t. the time-changed Brownian motion and we use techniques of enlargement of filtrations. The focus is on power and logarithmic utility. The presentation is based on joint work with Hannes Haferkorn (Commerzbank), Asma Khedher (U. Amsterdam), and Michèle Vanmaele (U. Ghent).
