Dear colleagues, We would like to draw your attention to a School and conference on "Gradient Flows, Large Deviation Theory, and Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory“ which will take place *June 17-21 2024 at Bielefeld University* and is part of the 2024 activity month "Fluctuations in interacting systems: From optimal transport and Fokker–Planck equations to fluid dynamics and SPDEs“ of the collaborative research center 1283 ( https://www.sfb1283.uni-bielefeld.de/workshops/activitymonth/2024) The overarching topic of the conference is the effective description of large systems of interacting particles and their fluctuations around their typical behaviour. This mathematical challenge is of fundamental importance in a variety of applications, ranging from mathematical modelling in the sciences, to the foundations of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and the dynamics of modern learning algorithms. Addressing these questions involves ideas from various disciplines in mathematics and physics. The workshop will bring together both leading experts and junior researchers from various fields, such as macroscopic fluctuation theory and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, interacting particle systems, large deviation theory, gradient flows and variational methods for partial differential equations, and stochastic partial differential equations. The program will feature lecture series and talks by leading scientists as well as opportunities for junior scientists to present their work. We are happy to announce that our next speaker is Francesca Crucinio (King's College London), who will talk about "A connection between Tempering and Entropic Mirror Descent" on Thursday the 2nd May, 9am UK time. Abstract: This work explores the connections between tempering (for Sequential Monte Carlo; SMC) and entropic mirror descent to sample from a target probability distribution whose unnormalized density is known. We establish that tempering SMC corresponds to entropic mirror descent applied to the reverse Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence and obtain convergence rates for the tempering iterates. Our result motivates the tempering iterates from an optimization point of view, showing that tempering can be seen as a descent scheme of the KL divergence with respect to the Fisher-Rao geometry, in contrast to Langevin dynamics that perform descent of the KL with respect to the Wasserstein-2 geometry. We exploit the connection between tempering and mirror descent iterates to justify common practices in SMC and derive adaptive tempering rules that improve over other alternative benchmarks in the literature. Dear colleagues, We are glad to announce that five fully funded PhD fellowships in STATISTICS are available within the PhD program ECOSTATDATA at the University of Milano-Bicocca. The PhD program ECOSTATDATA lasts four years (November 2024 - October 2028) and comprises three separate curricula: "Economics," "Statistics," and "Big Data and Analytics for Business." Eligibility The scholarship competition is open to applicants of any age or citizenship, holding a MSc degree (Laurea Magistrale) from an Italian university or an equivalent qualification from other countries. Participation is also open to candidates who do not have an MSc but expect to obtain their degree before October 31, 2024. Admission is decided on the basis of qualifications and an interview. Grant awarded The PhD scholarship is equal to € 16,243.00 per year (gross salary). It is exempt from local income tax and personal income tax (IRPEF). The grant will be awarded for four years and subject to satisfactory progress, which will be evaluated yearly. Si segnala il seguente seminario: Lunedì 22 Aprile 2024, ore 16:00, Sala di Consiglio, Dipartimento di Matematica "Guido Castelnuovo", Sapienza Università di Roma. *Speaker*: Andrea Agazzi (Università di Pisa) *Title*: Random Splitting of Fluid Models: Ergodicity, Convergence and Lyapunov exponents *Abstract: *We consider a family of processes obtained by decomposing the deterministic dynamics associated with some fluid models (e.g. Lorenz 96, 2d Galerkin-Navier-Stokes) into fundamental building blocks - i.e., minimal vector fields preserving some fundamental aspects of the original dynamics - and by sequentially following each vector field for a random amount of time. We characterize some ergodic properties of these stochastic dynamical systems and discuss their convergence to the original deterministic flow in the small noise regime. Finally, we show that the top Lyapunov exponent of these models is positive. Examples include the generation and spread of electrical signals across biological excitable tissues, interactions between particles and fields within a plasma, and network dynamics in human environments. The improvement in describing these phenomena, however, results in a more challenging numerical treatment, requiring specialized strategies, e.g., in terms of discretization methods or numerical solvers. We establish that tempering SMC corresponds to entropic mirror descent applied to the reverse Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence and obtain convergence rates for the tempering iterates. Our result motivates the tempering iterates from an optimization point of view, showing that tempering can be seen as a descent scheme of the KL divergence with respect to the Fisher-Rao geometry, in contrast to Langevin dynamics that perform descent of the KL with respect to the Wasserstein-2 geometry. We exploit the connection between tempering and mirror descent iterates to justify common practices in SMC and derive adaptive tempering rules that improve over other alternative benchmarks in the literature. Dear all, On Wednesday, April 17th, at 14h30 in Aula Dal Passo of Tor Vergata Math Department, RoMaDS (https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~rds/events.php) will host Tommaso Rosati (University of Warwick) with the seminar "Lower bounds to Lyapunov exponents of stochastic PDEs” Abstract: Inspired by problems from fluid dynamics, we introduce an approach to obtain lower bounds to Lyapunov exponents of stochastic PDEs. Our proof relies on the introduction of a Lyapunov functional for the projective process associated to the equation, based on the study of dynamics of energy level sets and on a notion of non-degeneracy of the noise that leads to high-frequency stochastic instability. In particular, I will focus on the Eulerian formulation, through the notion of master equation, which is a nonlinear PDE on the space of probability measures. This PDE is notoriously difficult to solve, at least in a classical sense, except in cases presenting a form of convexity or monotonicity in the argument of the measure. I will then present two problems outside the convex/monotonic framework: (i) non-convex mean-field control problems and their particle approximation, (ii) mean-field games subject to certain non-standard forms of common noise. Best regards, Enrico Scalas -- 14:00 - 15:00 Atsuhide Ishida (Tokyo University of Science, Tokyo, Japan) Mourre inequality for non-local Schrödinger operators We consider the Mourre inequality for the following self-adjoint operator $H=\Psi(-\Delta/2)+V$ acting on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, where $\Psi: [0,\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is an increasing function, $\Delta$ is the Laplacian and $V: \mathbb{R}^d\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is an interaction potential. Mourre inequality immediately yields the discreteness and finite multiplicity of the eigenvalues. Moreover, the Mourre inequality together with the limiting absorption principle can be used to show absence of the singular continuous spectrum. In addition, Mourre inequality is also used for the proof of the minimal velocity estimate that plays an important role in scattering theory. In this talk, we report that Mourre inequality holds under a general $\Psi$ and $V$ by choosing the conjugate operator $A=(p \cdot x + x \cdot p)/2$ with $p= - i \nabla$, and that the discreteness and finite multiplicity of the eigenvalues hold. Appaiono nella letteratura fisica e fisico-matematica alla fine degli anni '60 con il nome di semigruppi dinamici quantistici nella modellizzazione e nell'analisi dei sistemi aperti in meccanica quantistica. Tuttavia, dal punto di vista matematico, costituiscono la naturale generalizzazione dei semigruppi markoviani classici, infatti questi ultimi sono semigruppi di operatori definiti su un'algebra di funzioni, cioè un'algebra di operatori che commutano tra loro. Il modo più naturale per descrivere un sistema quantistico è un’algebra di Von Neumann e la sua evoluzione come una famiglia di operatori debole*-continui, che formino un semigruppo e che abbiano la proprietà di markovianità. Se il sistema è chiuso allora la sua evoluzione è reversibile, altrimenti se interagisce con l’ambiente allora ci potrebbe essere una parte diffusiva. In Fisica, si parla di “decoerenza” quando solo una parte del sistema evolve in maniera automorfica (l’algebra priva di decoerenza, appunto) e una parte “scompare” per tempi lunghi. La nostra ricerca si è focalizzata a lungo su quale definizione di decoerenza sia più adatta e se è possibile trovare condizioni necessarie e sufficienti per il suo verificarsi. Nello studio dei processi (semigruppi) di Markov classici sono fondamentali le nozioni di ricorrenza e comunicazione tra insiemi di stati; mostreremo come questi concetti siano stati generalizzati nel caso noncommutativo e discuteremo alcune delle loro proprietà e relazioni. It is a longstanding open problem whether EOT selects some particular optimal transport coupling in the vanishing regularization limit, and what that coupling would look like. We begin by providing general rates of convergence for the parameter error of successive iterates under assumptions of local restricted strong convexity and local restricted smoothness. Our analysis is local, in that it ensures a linear rate of convergence when the initial iterate lies within a constant-radius region of the true parameter. At each iterate, multivariate Gaussian noise is added to the gradient in order to guarantee that the output satisfies Gaussian differential privacy. We then derive consequences of our theory for linear regression and mean estimation. Motivated by M-estimators used in robust statistics, we study loss functions which downweight the contribution of individual data points in such a way that the sensitivity of function gradients is guaranteed to be bounded, even without the usual assumption that our data lie in a bounded domain. We prove that the objective functions thus obtained indeed satisfy the restricted convexity and restricted smoothness conditions required for our general theory. We then show how the private estimators obtained by noisy composite gradient descent may be used to obtain differentially private confidence intervals for regression coefficients, by leveraging work in Lasso debiasing proposed in high-dimensional statistics. A major reason of this surge in applications is the popularization of Sinkhorn's algorithm to efficiently solve the entropic optimal transport problem numerically. The topic of this talk is the (rate of) convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm. In bounded settings, it is known that Sinkhorn's algorithm converges with exponential rate, which is a consequence of applying a commonly used version of Hilbert's metric corresponding to the cone of all non-negative functions. This talk shows how to define versions of Hilbert's metric so that we can show exponential convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm even in unbounded settings. This is done through the use of cones which are a relaxations of the cone of all non-negative functions, in the sense that they include all functions having non-negative integral values when multiplied with certain test functions. Along the way, we establish that kernel integral operators are contractions with respect to suitable versions of Hilberts metric, even if the kernel functions are not bounded away from zero. Double Seminar: Federico Camia and Alessandra Bianchi at Tor Vergata 10.04

Dear all, On Wednesday, April 10th, at 14h30 in Aula Dal Passo of Tor Vergata Math Department, RoMaDS (https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~rds/events.php) will host a double seminar: 14h30 - Federico Camia (NYU Abu Dhabi) “Towards a logarithmic conformal field theory of 2D critical percolation” Abstract: Conformal field theory (CFT) provides a very powerful framework to study the large-scale properties of models of statistical mechanics at their critical point. The prototypical example of this is the continuum (scaling) limit of the two-dimensional critical Ising model. The case of critical percolation is more difficult, partly because its continuum limit is believed to be described by a relatively unusual type of CFT, called a logarithmic CFT. In this talk, I will first briefly explain the statements above. I will then present some recent results and work in progress that are part of a program aimed at fitting percolation within the logarithmic CFT framework. 15h30 - Alessandra Bianchi (Università di Padova) “Mixing cutoff for simple random walks on the Chung-Lu directed graph” Abstract: In this talk, we consider a simple random walk defined on a Chung-Lu directed graph, an inhomogeneous random network that extends the Erdos Renyi random digraph by including edges independently according to given Bernoulli laws. In this non-reversible setting, we will focus on the convergence toward the equilibrium of the dynamics. In particular, under the assumption that the average degree grows logarithmically in the size n of the graph (weakly dense regime), we will establish a cutoff phenomenon at the entropic time of order log(n)/loglog(n). We will then show that on a precise window the cutoff profile converges to the Gaussian tail function. This is qualitatively similar to what was proved in a series of works by Bordenave, Caputo, Salez for the directed configuration model, where degrees are deterministically fixed. In terms of statistical ensembles, this analysis provides an extension of these cutoff results from a hard to a soft-constrained model. Joint work with G. Passuello. The Mathematics department is looking for a candidate holding a PhD in mathematics whose research work is already widely recognized. The successful candidate's research will lie within the area of branching structures in probability theory. More specifically, his or her area of research should focus on branching structures such as discrete and continuous branching processes, spatial branching processes, random graphs, graph theory in combinatorics, fragmentation and coalescence, and/or applications in biology and particle physics. Speaker: Eliseo Luongo, Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. Title: Global Well-Posedness and Interior Regularity of 2D Navier-Stokes Equations with Stochastic Wind Driven Boundary Conditions. Abstract: Partial differential equations with boundary noise have been introduced by Da Prato and Zabczyck. They showed that, also in the one dimensional case, the solutions of the heat equation with white noise Dirichlet or Neumann Boundary conditions have low regularity compared to the case of noise diffused inside the domain. In particular, in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions the solution is only a distribution. Some improvements in the analysis of the interior regularity of the solutions of these problems and some nonlinear variants have been obtained exploiting specific properties of the heat kernel and of suitable nonlinearities. All these issues make the problem of treating non-linear partial differential equations with boundary noise coming from fluid dynamical models an, almost untouched, field of open problems. In this talk we discuss the global well-posedness and the interior regularity of a system of 2D Navier-Stokes equations with inhomogeneous stochastic boundary conditions. The noise, white in time and coloured in space, can be interpreted as the physical law describing the driving mechanism on the atmosphere-ocean interface, i.e. as a balance of the shear stress of the ocean and the horizontal wind force. A major reason of this surge in applications is the popularization of Sinkhorn's algorithm to efficiently solve the entropic optimal transport problem numerically. The topic of this talk is the (rate of) convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm. In bounded settings, it is known that Sinkhorn's algorithm converges with exponential rate, which is a consequence of applying a commonly used version of Hilbert's metric corresponding to the cone of all non-negative functions. This talk shows how to define versions of Hilbert's metric so that we can show exponential convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm even in unbounded settings. This is done through the use of cones which are a relaxations of the cone of all non-negative functions, in the sense that they include all functions having non-negative integral values when multiplied with certain test functions. Along the way, we establish that kernel integral operators are contractions with respect to suitable versions of Hilberts metric, even if the kernel functions are not bounded away from zero. Requirements and project We seek candidates with the aspiration to contribute to the research project ��MeCoGa �C mean field control and games�� of the University of Padova. Candidates must hold, or be about to obtain, a PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related field, and should possess a relevant record of publications. Expertise in research related to mean field games or mean field control problems is preferable, but not mandatory. The project may also involve applications to financial and energy markets, including numerical studies. In general, candidates should have carried out research in probability, analysis, or financial mathematics. The position holder is expected to undertake rigorous and innovative research, publish in high quality international journals, and contribute to the research activities of the Department. There are no teaching duties associated with the position. The post-doc position is for a two-year fixed-term contract. Appointments are full-time and the salary is about 2k� net per month. This technology has led to remarkable insights into how neurons process and encode information, both individually and collectively. In this talk, we examine how Bayesian mixture models can help uncover the complex functioning of neurons in different experimental studies. First, we discuss a nested mixture model to analyze how the activity of an individual cell is affected by visual stimuli that vary over time. Then, we move to a multivariate model to identify groups of co-activating neurons, where the information on the anatomical proximity is introduced to inform the clustering procedure. At the basis of both models is a simple but effective state-space formulation that describes the calcium dynamic and relates it to the latent firing events. Through these examples, we show how the Bayesian nonparametric framework is ideal for flexibly modeling the unobserved neuronal activity, identifying patterns of activity, borrowing information across experimental conditions, and including additional knowledge.
