When the joint process {(Xn,Yn)} is a Markov chain of a given memory length, the plug-in estimator is shown to be asymptotically Gaussian and to converge at the optimal rate O(1/√n) under appropriate conditions; this is the first estimator that has been shown to achieve this rate. An important connection is drawn between the problem of estimating the directed information rate and that of performing a hypothesis test for the presence of causal influence between the two processes. Under fairly general conditions, the null hypothesis, which corresponds to the absence of causal influence, is equivalent to the requirement that the directed information rate be equal to zero. In that case, a finer result is established, showing that the plug-in converges at the faster rate O (1/ n) and that it is asymptotically χ 2 -distributed. This is proved by showing that this estimator is equal to (a scalar multiple of) the classical likelihood ratio statistic for the above hypothesis test. Firms’ increase in debt reduces their output due to moral hazard. Banks need safe collateral to raise funds. Without government support, aggregate risk constrains bank lending, amplifying output losses. Optimal support provides sufficient aggregate risk insurance, and is implemented with firm-specific transfers, fairly-priced guarantees on bank debt, and countercyclical firms’ taxation to achieve a fiscal surplus target. Dear colleagues, I am happy to announce the following PhD course: The PhD course "Analysis and control of stochastic models of biomolecular interactions", taught by Dr. Ankit Gupta (Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering, ETH Zürich) will be hosted by Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, in May 17-20, 2022. Attending in person is strongly recommended, but other options are available if necessary. To register and for any question, please write to daniele.cappelletti(a)polito.it. The course will deal with stochastic reaction network models, which are continuous time Markov chains commonly used to model biochemical dynamics within cells. Their theoretical and computational analysis is often quite challenging, and design of mathematical methods for their study is currently a very active research area. The goal of this course is to familiarize the students with a broad spectrum of these methods and illustrate them with several biological applications of current and lively interest in the research community. In particular, the following topics will be covered: 1. Finite State Projection methods 2. Moment Closure Schemes 3. Simulation approaches 4. Tenure Track Assistant Professor (RTD-B) - Management and Finance The candidate must have excellent scientific production and solid experience in management science, business strategy (performance & business dynamics, dynamic capabilities) and/or quantitative finance. The position will strengthen one of the core missions of IMT Lucca in the analysis of business and market dynamics, also with the use of quantitative techniques. The ideal candidate is a scholar with a solid research background in management and/or finance at the international level, an excellent scientific production, with clear evidence of the results achieved so far and future perspectives. A specific experience in teaching at the postgraduate (master and doctorate) level will be considered as a plus. Candidates should be open to interdisciplinary collaborations. Tenure Track Assistant Professor (RTD-B) - Networks and Data Science The candidate must have an excellent scientific production and a solid experience in network science and/or data science. The position will strengthen one of the core missions of IMT Lucca in the multidisciplinary analysis of complex systems dynamics, via the application of data-driven methods (e.g. mathematical, physical, statistical or machine learning models) and/or network-based methods (e.g. agent-based models; percolation models; models for network inference from observed time series). The ideal candidate is a scholar with a solid research background in network science and/or data science at the international level,an excellent publication track record, with clear evidence of the results achieved so far and future perspectives. A specific experience in teaching at the post-graduate (master and doctorate) level will be considered as a plus. Abstract: I will review recent results on a class of zero-sum game problems of mean-field type which extend the classical zero-sum Dynkin game problems. The results I will highlight include sufficient conditions under which such a game admits a value and a saddle point and a characterization of the value of the game in terms of a specific class of doubly reflected backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) of mean-field type. Moreover, a corresponding system of weakly interacting values of zero-sum Dynkin games is introduced and is shown to converge to the value of the zero-sum mean-field Dynkin game. Her research focuses on the development of innovative statistical methods and computational tools for geospatial data analysis and health surveillance, and the impact of her work has directly informed strategic policy in reducing disease burden in several countries. She has developed modeling architectures to understand the geographic and temporal patterns and identify targets for intervention of diseases such as malaria in Africa and cancer in Australia, and has worked on the development of a number of R packages for Bayesian risk modeling, detection of disease clusters, and risk assessment of travel-related spread of disease. // //* * *Abstract: *Spatially misaligned data are becoming increasingly common due to advances in both data collection and management in a wide range of scientific disciplines including the epidemiological, ecological and environmental fields. Here, we present a Bayesian geostatistical model for fusion of data obtained at point and areal resolutions. The model assumes that underlying all observations there is a spatially continuous variable that can be modeled using a Gaussian random field process. The model is fitted using the integrated nested Laplace approximation (INLA) and the stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) approaches. In the SPDE approach, a continuously indexed Gaussian random field is represented as a discretely indexed Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) by means of a finite basis function defined on a triangulation of the region of study. In order to allow the combination of point and areal data, a new projection matrix for mapping the GMRF from the observation locations to the triangulation nodes is proposed which takes into account the types of data to be combined. The performance of the model is examined via simulation when it is fitted to point, areal, and point and areal data combined to predict several simulated surfaces that can appear in real settings. The model is also applied to predict the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, USA, during 2011. The results show that the combination of point and areal data provides better predictions than if the method is applied to just one type of data, and this is consistent over both simulated and real data. José Figueroa Lopez Professor at the Washington University in St. Louis will give, both on site and on line, the SEMINAR Efficient Volatility Estimation for Lévy Processes with Jumps of Unbounded Variation Abstract. Statistical inference for stochastic processes based on high-frequency observations has been an active research area for more than a decade. One of the most well-known and widely studied problems is that of estimation of the quadratic variation of the continuous component of an Itô semimartingale with jumps. Several rate- and variance-efficient estimators have been proposed in the literature when the jump component is of bounded variation. However, to date, very few methods can deal with jumps of unbounded variation. By developing new high-order expansions of the truncated moments of a Lévy process, we construct a new rate- and variance-efficient estimator for a class of Lévy processes of unbounded variation, whose small jumps behave like those of a stable Lévy process with Blumenthal-Getoor index less than 8/5. The proposed method is based on a two-step debiasing procedure for the truncated realized quadratic variation of the process. Our Monte Carlo experiments indicate that the method outperforms other efficient alternatives in the literature in the setting covered by our theoretical framework. Abstract: Motivated by the challenge of incorporating data into misspecified and multiscale dynamical models, we study a McKean-Vlasov equation that contains the data stream as a common driving rough path. This setting allows us to prove well-posedness as well as continuity with respect to the driver in an appropriate rough-path topology. The latter property is key in our subsequent development of a robust data assimilation methodology: We establish propagation of chaos for the associated interacting particle system, which in turn is suggestive of a numerical scheme that can be viewed as an extension of the ensemble Kalman filter to a rough-path framework. Finally, we discuss a data-driven method based on subsampling to construct suitable rough path lifts and demonstrate the robustness of our scheme in a number of numerical experiments related to parameter estimation problems in multiscale contexts. The classical mathematical and statistical paradigms are often not applicable to current real-world problems, so there is a growing demand of new mathematical and statistical techniques to face such problems, able to shed some light on the often black-box techniques which are usually applied in such context and which characterise Deep Learning and, more generally, Artificial Intelligence. Though ERM achieves optimal convergence rates [1], it requires huge computational resources on high dimensional datasets. The second half of the talk is devoted to discuss some recent ideas where the hypothesis space is a low dimensional random space. This approach naturally leads to computational savings, but the question is whether the corresponding learning accuracy is degraded. If the random subspace is spanned by a random subset of the data, the statistical-computational tradeoff has been first explored for the least squares loss [2,3], for the least squares loss, then for self-concordant loss functions [4] , as the logistic loss, and, quite recently, for non-smooth convex Lipschitz loss functions [5], as the hinge loss. We will show direct applications in probability representation and non-convex optimization. In particular, the model allows to derive an algorithm for non-convex optimization that is adaptive to the degree of differentiability of the objective function and achieves optimal rates of convergence. Learning-augmented CMSs aim at improving the CMS by means of learning models that allow to better exploit data properties. We focus on the learning-augmented CMS of Cai, Mitzenmacher and Adams (NeurIPS, 2018), which relies on Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) modeling of a data stream via Dirichlet process (DP) priors; this is refereed to as the CMS-DP. We present a novel and rigorous approach of the CMS-DP, and we show that it allows to consider more general classes of nonparametric priors than the DP prior. We apply our approach to develop a novel learning-augmented CMS under power-law data streams, which relies on BNP modeling of the stream via Pitman-Yor process (PYP) priors; this is referred to as the CMS-PYP. Applications to synthetic data and real data show that the CMS-PYP outperfo rms both the CMS and CMS-DP in the estimation of low-frequency tokens; this is known to be a critical feature in natural language processing, where it is indeed common to encounter power-law data. The purpose of this research grant, which shall last for *16 months*, is to carry out research activity into developing statistical models for high dimensional data following approaches both frequentist and Bayesian. Annuncio di seminario online Stefano Favaro, Università di Torino e CNR-IMATI Learning-augmented count-min sketches via Bayesian nonparametrics ven 28 gen 2022 11:30 - 12:30 (CET) The count-min sketch (CMS) is a time and memory efficient randomized data structure that provides estimates of tokens’ frequencies in a data stream, i.e. point queries, based on randomly hashed data. Learning-augmented CMSs aim at improving the CMS by means of learning models that allow to better exploit data properties. We focus on the learning-augmented CMS of Cai, Mitzenmacher and Adams (NeurIPS, 2018), which relies on Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) modeling of a data stream via Dirichlet process (DP) priors; this is refereed to as the CMS-DP. We present a novel and rigorous approach of the CMS-DP, and we show that it allows to consider more general classes of nonparametric priors than the DP prior. We apply our approach to develop a novel learning-augmented CMS under power-law data streams, which relies on BNP modeling of the stream via Pitman-Yor process (PYP) priors; this is referred to as the CMS-PYP. Applications to synthetic data and real data show that the CMS-PYP outperforms both the CMS and CMS-DP in the estimation of low-frequency tokens; this is known to be a critical feature in natural language processing, where it is indeed common to encounter power-law data. In general, a location problem consists of determining the position of one or more facilities to satisfy the demand of a set of demand points, such that some criteria (represented by objective functions) are optimized (minimize or maximize). In this seminar, we present two new location problems that arise from two different applied scopes. (1) In the literature of transportation research field, it is frequent to address routing or distribution problems where the movement between points is given by the combination of different transportation modes. For instance, movements within or outside an urban area could be different: within the city boundary the movement is slow due to the layout of the streets and traffic, while outside this boundary in the rural area the movement is fast. This situation can be modeled as regions endowed with different norms, where distances within the regions are the ones induced by the corresponding norm. In this framework, we address the single-facility Weber location problem considering different Lp-norms at different polyhedral regions. (2) Given a set of tradable assets, the classical portfolio selection problem consists in determining the amount of capital to be invested in each asset to build the most performing portfolio. A relatively recent promising strand of research is to exploit clustering information of an asset network to develop new portfolio optimization paradigms. Following this idea, we endow the asset network with a metric based on correlation coefficients between assets’ returns and show how classical location problems on networks can be used for clustering assets. More precisely, in the bi-objective (gain-risk) portfolio selection model, we add a third criterion which is represented by the objective function of the standard p-median location problem. In this way, we are able to evaluate the effect of different degrees of clustering on the selected portfolios. We tackle the above problems using Mathematical Programming tools (MISOCP and MILP formulations for the first and the second problems, respectively). The usefulness of our approach is validated by reporting some computational experiments.
