The system combines a structural time series model for the target series with regression component capturing the contributions of contemporaneous search query data. A spike-and-slab prior on the regression coefficients induces sparsity, dramatically reducing the size of the regression problem. Our system averages over potential contributions from a very large set of models and gives easily digested reports of which coefficients are likely to be important. We illustrate with applications to initial claims for unemployment benefits and to retail sales. Although our exposition focuses on using search engine data to forecast economic time series, the underlying statistical methods can be applied to more general short term forecasting with large numbers of contemporaneous predictors. In imaging, PDEs following variational principles are often considered. In their general form these models combine a regularisation and a data fitting term, balancing one against the other appropriately. Typically, Total variation (TV) regularisation is used due to its edge-preserving and smoothing properties. In this talk, we focus on the use of PDEs for the optimal design of several Imaging models. Starting from the use of higher-order and non-smooth variants of classical heat-type diffusion models often employed to counteract well-known TV reconstruction drawbacks (such as staircasing), we focus in particular on the use of non-smooth optimisation approaches with PDE constraints in the context of optimal parameter estimation for some non-standard image denoising problems. Saldini, 50, Milano, "Neuronal Classification from Network Connectivity " Rebecca GOLDIN George Mason University Abstract The mammalian brain is a large network of neurons (~10^8 in rodents up to 10^11 in humans) sparsely interconnected by synapses (~10^4 per neuron). Most synapses are directional contacts between extensive tree-like structures, namely the axon of the output neuron and the dendrite of the input neuron. The ongoing assembly of complete maps of such circuits (“connectomes”) is crucial to understanding the brain structure-function relationship. Although the exact connectivity pattern of each neuron is unique, the common working assumption posits the existence of distinct “neuronal classes”, such that neurons in the same class share more similar connectivity patterns than neurons in different classes. A rigorous definition of this concept is still lacking, and even the order of magnitude of the number of neuronal classes is source of wide disagreement in neuroscience. Connectomic data may become available within the next decade for at least parts of nervous system in animal models, yet the mathematics to analyze these data is still underdeveloped. Indeed, that same mathematics should inform the data collection itself: Should we collect as much data from one animal as possible, or from as many animals as possible? Are more data with less precision better or worse than more precision with less data? We developed a class of probabilistic models that formalizes the concept of neuronal class based on network connectivity. Given a complete list of all neurons and their connections in a network, the model derives the number of neuronal classes, and an assignment of each neuron to a class. We fit the model using sparse singular value decomposition, and cluster the latent vectors into groups, and infer the neuronal classes. We tested the models on neurobiologically realistic simulated data, and found that our approach is robust and computationally tractable. We generated 50 graphs with 32,768 vertices each by stochastically assigning (secret) groups. One model consistently returned 100% correct class assignment, with 2% error in individual neural assignment, and reconstructed probability matrices well within the precision specified in the original probability matrix. This method provides a practical and theoretical foundation to bridge neuronal- and system-level neuroanatomy. We will focus on one standard example of the theory, namely the generalized Parabolic Anderson Model (gPAM), and prove that its solution, when evaluated at a space-time point, admits a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Ever since the pioneering work of Arnold Zellner, Bayesian econometrics has expanded enormously in areas such as economics, finance, business, and marketing. Empirical applications of Bayesian econometrics deal with issues such as financial time series analysis, risk management, economic growth analysis, measurement of policy effectiveness, individual decision making in marketing, labour market analysis, forecasting in monetary policy, just to name a few. The computational revolution in simulation techniques is a key ingredient in this expansion and allows the application of Bayesian methods to increasingly complex models and high-dimensional data environments. The performance of wireless networks where users share the air as communication medium is strongly limited by the electromagnetic interference phenomenon: two users who are close and communicate on the same frequency will interfere, which may potentially lead to losing the information transmitted. Access protocols are here to mitigate this effect and thus play a key role in the performance of modern >From a scientific standpoint, this is a challenging problem that has attracted considerable attention from both the computer science and applied probability communities for more than 30 years. Recently, a new class of access protocols – called adaptive CSMA protocols – has emerged, and which seems very promising. These protocols were for instance shown to enjoy the very desirable property of being maximally stable. The goal of this project is to advance the state-of-the-art on the particular adaptive CSMA protocols called CSMA-QB protocols (where QB stands for Queue-Based), which to date is very limited. In particular, we will aim to prove theoretical results that shed light on the achievable trade-off between throughput and delay. Probabilistic model. From a technical standpoint, we will study the following model. Each user of the network is represented by the node of a graph G, called interference graph, and such that two neighboring nodes cannot be active simultaneously. Packets to be transmitted arrrive at each node over time, and the goal is to choose which nodes are active at every moment. CSMA-QB solves this problem in the following manner: when a node is active, it de-activates at a constant rate and when it is active and none of its neighbors is, then it activates at a rate that depends on the number of packets in its backlog. The dependency is given by a function ψ called activation function. The general goal of the thesis is to understand the influence of the topology G and of the choice of ψ on the protocol performance. This involves classical probabilistic tools, and we will in particular study the mixing time of Glauber dynamic as well as the stochastic averaging property, both of which play a key role in the analysis of this protocol.

Despite this, there are still fundamental statistical questions which have received relatively little attention. One of these is the systematic development of techniques for constructing confidence regions for functional parameters. I will present new work that takes a geometric approach to developing, understanding, and visualizing such regions. Simulations and an application to Fractional Anisotropy will also be presented. Panaretos, Kraus, and Maddocks (2010) compare covariance operators for Gaussian process data. Pigoli, Aston, Dryden, and Secchi (2014) consider a variety of metrics over the space of covariance operators. In this talk, we propose a novel approach to the analysis of covariance operators making use of concentration inequalities. First, non-asymptotic confidence sets are constructed for such operators. Then, subsequent applications including a k sample test for equality of covariance, a functional data classifier, and an expectation-maximization style clustering algorithm are derived and tested on both simulated and phoneme data. Three problems are considered: the behavior of the maximal functionals, the representation results and some statistical results. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of maximal functionals under critical values of the parameters of the corresponding quasi-helix, give the representations of the random variables via the integration w.r.t. Gaussian processes and explain how to construct and investigate unknown drift parameter estimators in the SDE involving the general Gaussian processes. Ore 15.30 Prof. Erik Schloegl University of Technology Sydney Title: Toward Quantifying Model Risk Abstract: As a paper by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System put it in 2011, ?The use of models invariably presents model risk, which is the potential for adverse consequences from decisions based on incorrect or misused model outputs and reports.? However, there has been surprisingly little research to date on quantifying this risk, or putting the analysis of this risk on a more rigorous footing. This presentation discusses four types of model risk encountered when using models for the pricing and risk management of derivative financial instruments, and the relationship (and potential trade-offs) between them. Secondly, we consider how one would go about implementing the ?relative entropy? approach to model risk suggested by Glasserman and Xu (2013) in this context, and how this may affect modelling choices in practice. We are happy to announce that Torino University and Politecnico from June 19 to June 22, 2017 will host the *First Italian National Meeting on Probability and Mathematical Statistics. * Scientific Committee: Claudia Ceci, Franco Fagnola, Franco Flandoli, Paolo Dai Pra, Antonio Lijoi,Franco Pellerey and Laura Sacerdote Scope of the meeting is the scientific exchange between Italian mathematicians working on the subject in Italy or abroad. We also welcome talks from foreign researchers working in Italy. The participation is open to any interested scientist who would like to partecipate. The conference will include lectures of some "seniors" between us, but the focus will be mainly on the work of new generations also through some plenary lectures. We also plan to reserve a space to discuss the future of our researches in Italy. We decide to call this meeting "First meeting" because it is the first conference of this type, since 1998 and we hope it will become a habit in our community. Machine learning models have helped to monitor land, oceans, and atmosphere through the analysis and estimation of climate and biophysical parameters. Current approaches, however, cannot deal efficiently with the particular characteristics of remote sensing data. We will develop advanced regression (retrieval, model inversion) methods to improve efficiency, prediction accuracy and uncertainties, encode physical knowledge about the problem, attain self-explanatory models, learn graphical causal models to explain the complex interactions between essential climate variables and observations, and discover hidden essential drivers and confounding factors in Climate/Geo Sciences. Highly motivated researchers with a degree/PhD in computer science, statistics, machine learning, electrical engineering, physics, or mathematics are encouraged to apply. All candidates should have a solid understanding and knowledge of machine learning and statistics, and being particularly interested in remote sensing and geoscience problems. (Joint with William H. Sandholm (Wisconsin-Madison)) Abstract: Evolutionary game dynamics describe the behavior of populations of myopic, strategically interacting agents who update their strategies by applying simple decision rules. The resulting game dynamics is an irreducible Markov chain on a finite state space. Most applications in this area focus on the long-run properties of such dynamics, particularly on invariant distributions. For finitely many players, the concept of a stochastically stable state has received much attention in the literature, where it has been proposed as an equilibrium selection device in games. In this paper we propose an alternative point of view of stochastic stability, focusing on games with large player sets. In this limit we provide explicit bounds for key statistics of the evolutionary game dynamic. In particular, using recent results on sample path large deviations for population processes, we provide bounds for the expected exit time from the basin of attraction of stable equilibria and the stationary distribution of the Markov chain.
