Dear colleagues, We would be grateful if you could advertise to the junior members of your groups the Summer School on Particle Systems in Random Environments, which will take place at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt from August 26 to 30, 2024. The school will focus on widely popular models, such as random walks, the contact process, the voter model and branching random walks in random (dynamical) environments and/or graphs. It will feature three mini courses by •⁠ ⁠Luca Avena (University of Florence) •⁠ ⁠Nina Gantert (TU Munich) •⁠ ⁠Daniel Valesin (University of Warwick), which will be complemented by a number of talks related to the main topics given by young researchers. Registration is free but mandatory, and funding is available for the accommodation of young participants. The deadline is June 20, 2024. *Title: *Introduction to Random Geometry *Abstract:* This course wants to give an overview of active research topics in the field of Random Geometry, with a focus on growth models. We will start by discussing discrete growth models such as the Eden model, Diffusion Limited Aggregation and Internal DLA. We will then move to the continuum for the remaining part of the course. After discussing conformal invariance of Brownian motion, we will focus on the class of randomly growing domains on the complex plane which can be described via Loewner dynamics. We will introduce several random aggregation models on the complex plane, which go under the name of Hastings-Levitov models and Aggregate Loewner Evolutions, of which we will study the large-scale features, presenting existing results and several open questions. *Keywords:* Random growth models, Diffusion Limited Aggregation, Schramm-Loewner Evolutions, Hastings-Levitov, Aggregate Loewner Evolutions. *Prerequisites:* The course will be as self-contained as possible. However, basic notions of Probability and Analysis are necessary. Si avvisa che in data 14-03-2024, alle ore **14:00** precise presso il Politecnico di Milano, in aula Consiglio (settimo piano Dipartimento di Matematica - edificio 14), si svolgerà il seguente seminario della serie MOX Colloquia Simon Wood, School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh Titolo: On Neighbourhood Cross Validation Abstract: Cross validation is a well known method for estimating hyperparameters in complex regression models. It comes in many varieties, but some of the more interesting flavours require multiple model fits with consequently high cost. This talk shows how the high cost can be side-stepped for a wide range of models estimated using a quadratically penalized smooth loss, with rather low approximation error. Once the computational cost has the same leading order as a single model fit, it becomes feasible to efficiently optimize the chosen cross-validation criterion with respect to multiple smoothing/precision parameters. Interesting applications include cross-validating smooth additive quantile regression models, and the use of leave-out-neighbourhood cross validation for dealing with nuisance short range autocorrelation. The link between cross validation and the jackknife can be exploited to obtain reasonably well calibrated uncertainty quantification in these case. The successful candidate is expected to have a Master's degree in Mathematics or a related field, a good background in probability theory and proficiency in written and spoken English. Milano - Bicocca) si terrà il seguente Seminario Matematico e Fisico di Milano: Prof.ssa Corinna Ulcigrai (Institut für Mathematik - Universität Zürich) "Periodic surfaces and deterministic random walks: dynamics between geometry and probability" Abstract: Many deterministic systems display chaotic features: the stronger the chaotic features, the better the system can be approximated by a probabilistic model, an idea that can be traced back to Boltzmann and explains the success of the branch of dynamical systems known as ergodic theory. In this talk, we will discuss systems that display only 'mild’ chaotic features, such as the geodesic flow on surfaces with a flat geometry or the Ehrenfest model in mathematical physics. Recent breakthroughs in our understanding of the latter model introduced more than a century ago, were made possible by the powerful tools exploiting moduli spaces of surfaces and Teichmueller dynamics, an area which has attracted the work of several Fields medallists. We will in particular highlight some results of probabilistic flavor that can still be proven for these deterministic systems, hidden in the fractal structure of trajectories and the 'deterministic random walks' that describe them. Requirements We seek candidates with a strong commitment to applied research and the aspiration to contribute to ANTHEM project. Candidates must hold a PhD in statistics, data science, mathematics or related fields, preferably have teaching experience, and a relevant record of publications and/or research projects. Primary attention will be given to profiles showing expertise in coding with R or python. Ideal candidates will show a passionate drive to engage in Politecnico di Milano’s dynamic and stimulating academic environment and contribute to its further development. They will have research experience on Statistics and Data Science and intend to pursue research projects in the field, with a focus on: Statistical Learning, Analysis of Complex Data, Interaction between Bioengineering and Statistics. Activity, Role and Responsibilities The position holders are expected to undertake rigorous and innovative research, publish in high quality international journals, and provide academic assistance or leadership in research activities. They are also expected to contribute to the ANTHEM community at large. The post-doc position is for a two-year fixed-term contract. Appointments are full-time and the salary is competitive (36Keuro/y). Main focus of the project is the analysis of multivariate time series recording vital signals and pollutants exposure through innovative wearable devices. Innovative models and algorithms for multivariate spatially correlated time series will be developed, together with method for estimating their prediction uncertainty based on innovative resampling methods like conformal prediction. About the group The research will be conducted in an interdisciplinary group composed by statisticians, bioengineers and mathematicians, across the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Electronics, Informatics and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano.
