Monday, 27 January 2025, 16.00-17.00 Seminar room, third floor, building 14, Via Bonardi 9, Milano (Leonardo Campus) Adrien Mathieu (Oxford University) Title: Market Making with fads, Informed and Uninformed traders. Abstract: We characterize the solutions to a continuous-time optimal liquidity provision problem in a market populated by informed and uninformed traders. In our model, the asset price exhibits fads -- these are short-term deviations from the fundamental value of the asset. Conditional on the value of the fad, we model how informed traders and uninformed traders arrive in the market. The market maker knows of the two groups of traders but only observes the anonymous order arrivals. We study both the complete information and the partial information versions of the control problem faced by the market maker. In such frameworks, we characterize the value of information, and we find the price of liquidity as a function of the proportion of informed traders in the market. Lastly, for the partial information setup, we explore how to go beyond the Kalman-Bucy filter to extract information about the fad from the market arrivals. Our next speaker is Paul Bürkner<https://paulbuerkner.com/> (TU Dortmund University), who will talk about "Amortized Mixture and Multilevel Models" with an abstract reported below. Abstract: Probabilistic mixture and multilevel models are central building blocks in Bayesian data analysis. However, they remain challenging to estimate and evaluate, especially when the involved likelihoods or priors are analytically intractable. Recent developments in generative deep learning and simulation-based inference have shown promising results in scaling up Bayesian inference through amortization. Against this background, we have developed specialized neural inference frameworks for estimating Bayesian mixture and multilevel models. The involved neural architectures are closely mirroring the probabilistic symmetries and conditional (in-)dependencies assumed by these models. This not only speeds up neural network training, but also enables amortized inference for new datasets of varying number of groups and sample sizes. Dear Colleagues, we have the great pleasure to share information on new doctoral positions within the research training group (RTG) „Coping with Uncertainty in Dynamic Economies“. This research training group is sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for up to 9 years, with approximately one million euro per year. We have successfully hired a first cohort of students in 2023, and we are now looking forward to the second cohort. The positions are fully funded, at competitive levels (approx 43.000 Euro gross per year). The RTG is an initiative of ten principal investigators from the Center for Mathematical Economics and the Data Science Research Group at Bielefeld University. Next to the well established core program of our doctoral school BiGSEM (www.bigsem.de <http://www.bigsem.de/>), students will thus work in an excellent research environment on topics involving uncertainty in its various aspects and their consequences for dynamic economies. The research training group holds strong ties with top international researchers who will give specialized block courses and summer schools. The Department of Economics<https://www.dse.univr.it/?lang=en> at the University of Verona (Italy) aims to fill a position for Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Statistics Economic Statistics Mathematical Finance and Economics. The position is a fixed-term six-year position (RTT). During the first three years, the Department will offer a salary top-up of 20.000 EUR per annum. If the researcher receives the National Scientific Habilitation (ASN), starting from the fourth year it is possible to convert the position into a tenured associate professor one. The position comes with a teaching load of up to 60 hours per annum for the first three years and up to 120 hours per annum from the fourth year. The Department offers courses taught both in Italian and in English at all academic levels. To be eligible, candidates must have at least a basic proficiency in Italian. The Department also values a strong research track record and the ability to attract research funding at both national and international levels. As for the time-change we consider a general increasing stochastic process with finitely many jumps. To tackle this problem we present change of variable formulas for stochastic integrals w.r.t. the time-changed Brownian motion and we use techniques of enlargement of filtrations. Call for Papers: 14th International Symposium on Imprecise Probabilities (ISIPTA 2025) - Bielefeld The 14th International Symposium on Imprecise Probabilities: Theories and Applications (ISIPTA 2025) will be held at the Bielefeld University Center for Interdisciplinary Research from Tuesday, July 15, 2025, to Friday, July 18, 2025. ISIPTA is the premier international event dedicated to the exploration of imprecise probabilities, providing a platform for both theoretical advancements and practical applications. The symposium will feature both contributed sessions and keynote talks from leading experts in the field. Keynote speakers are: • Carole Bernard (Grenoble École de Management & Vrije Universiteit Brussel) • Itzhak Gilboa (Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris & Reichman University) • Peter Grünwald (Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica & Leiden University) • Jan Obłój (University of Oxford) We invite contributions on all aspects of imprecise probabilities, a term encompassing a wide range of mathematical and statistical models that quantify uncertainty without the restriction of precise probabilities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, sets of probability measures, partial preference orderings, game-theoretic probability, choice functions, interval probabilities, risk measures, nonlinear expectations, belief functions, and possibility theory. All accepted contributions will be presented and discussed in two separate sessions. Presentations are short and plenary. Best, Ofelia The Financial Mathematics Research Group of the Department of Mathematics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) invites applications for PhD studies supported by fully funded PhD studentships. We are seeking exceptionally talented and motivated students with a strong mathematical background and interest in financial mathematics, stochastic optimal control, stochastic analysis, and related areas. The research group consists of Ofelia Bonesini, Christoph Czichowsky, Albina Danilova, Pavel Gapeev, Arne Lokka, Johannes Ruf, Luitgard Veraart and Mihail Zervos covering all areas of financial mathematics including optimal investment, pricing and hedging of financial derivatives, financial markets with frictions, optimal execution, systemic risk, applications of machine learning and stochastic optimal control. PhD students are enrolled at LSE and take part in the London Graduate School in Mathematical Finance (https://www.londonmathfinance.org.uk) - a consortium of financial mathematics groups including Bayes Business School, Imperial College London, King's College, LSE and UCL - and are expected to complete their studies within four years. Applicants will be considered for fully funded PhD studentships which are tenable for four years and cover full fees and an annual stipend, which for 2024 entry was £21,237. The studentships are usually tax free. The award of these studentships is competitive, based on academic performance (typically in an MSc or equivalent). Dear all, I'm writing to advertise BioInference2025, taking place in Bardonecchia, Turin, between the 28th and the 30th May 2025. The call for abstract is now open, as detailed below. BioInference aims to bring together researchers from across statistics and mathematical modelling who work with biological systems, to foster discussions and prompt collaborations between the two communities across all career stages. After the previous three editions hosted in the UK, the BioInference 2025 conference (https://bioinference.github.io/2025/) is now going abroad to Italy. This year’s BioInference conference will take place in Bardonecchia, a town in the Alps near Turin on the 28-30 May 2025. Differently from previous editions, this year's conference is going to be a residential 3-days event that will include more talks and networking opportunities compared to previous years. The Uniform Spanning Tree (UST) is obtained by choosing one of the possible spanning trees of G at random. The Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) is realised instead by putting random weights on the edges of G and then selecting the spanning tree with the smallest weight. These two models exhibit markedly different behaviours: for example, their diameter on the complete graph with n nodes transitions from n^1/2 for the UST to n^1/3 for the MST. What lies in between? We introduce a model of Random Spanning Trees in Random Environment (RSTRE) designed to interpolate between UST and MST. In particular, when the environment disorder is sufficiently low, the RSTRE on the complete graph has a diameter of n^1/2 as the UST. Conversely, when the disorder is high, the diameter behaves like n^1/3 as for the MST. We conjecture a smooth transition between these two values for intermediate levels of disorder. As for the time-change we consider a general increasing stochastic process with finitely many jumps. To tackle this problem we present change of variable formulas for stochastic integrals w.r.t. the time-changed Brownian motion and we use techniques of enlargement of filtrations.
