When graphs are sparse the picture is less clear, objects that describe globally the graphs and their limits, as graphons do for dense graphs, have not been defined yet. Nevertheless we do have information on how these graphs look like when explored locally from a vertex and this, under some assumptions, gives also information on global properties. In this talk we will give an overview on what is known on rare events in this regime, focusing in particular on large deviation statements on connected components in inhomogeneous random graphs and on links with coagulation processes. This talk is based on joint works with Wolfgang König (WIAS and TU Berlin), Tejas Iyer, Heide Langhammer, Elena Magnanini and Robert Patterson (WIAS).

OUTLINE: The aim of this course is to introduce the fundamental concepts and the state-of-the-art methods for causal inference under the potential outcomes framework, with an emphasis on the Bayesian inferential paradigm. Topics will cover randomized experiments, common methods for observational studies, such as propensity score, matching, weighting and doubly-robust estimation, heterogeneous treatment effects, sensitivity analysis, instrumental variables, principal stratification, panel data methods, and longitudinal treatments. Recent advances related to high dimensional analysis and machine learning will be naturally incorporated into the discussion. All methods will be illustrated via real world case studies. The advantage of the birth-death dynamics is that, unlike any local dynamics such as Langevin dynamics, it allows global movement of mass directly from one mode to another, without the difficulty of going through low probability regions. We prove that the birth death dynamics converges to the unique invariant measure with a uniform rate under some mild conditions, showing its potential of overcoming metastability. We will also show that on torus, the kernelized dynamics, which is used for numerical simulation, Gamma-converges to the idealized dynamics as the kernel bandwidth shrinks to zero. Joint work with Yulong Lu (UMass Amherst) and Dejan Slepcev (CMU).

AVVISO di SEMINARIO Prof. Nikolai Leonenko School of Mathematics, Cardiff University, UK TITOLO Multiscaling, Intermittency and large deviation in limit theorems for superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes Abstract Superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type (supOU) processes provide a rich class of stationary stochastic processes for which the marginal distribution and the dependence structure may be modeled independently [1,2]. We investigate the limiting behavior of integrated supOU processes with finite variance[3,4,6] (see also [7] for multifaced behaviour of supOU processes in the case the infinite variance). We show that after suitable normalization four different limiting processes may arise. The type of limit depends on the decay of the correlation function as well as on the characteristic triplet of the marginal distribution. supOU processes, moreover, may exhibit intermittency, a phenomenon affecting the rate of growth of moments[3,4,5,6,8]. The intermittency phenomenon appears also in some other models, for example, in the subclass of ambit processes[2] known as trawl processes [5]. Joint work with D. Planar discs. Abstract We define the static Widom-Rowlinson model on a two-dimensional finite torus. The energy of a particle configuration is determined by its halo, defined as the union of unit discs centred at the positions of the particles. We discuss the metastable behaviour of a dynamic version of the model, in which particles are randomly created and annihilated as if the outside of the torus were an infinite reservoir with a given chemical potential. We start with the empty torus and are interested in the first time when the torus is fully covered by unit discs. This can be viewed as the crossover time from a ‘gas phase’ to a ‘liquid phase’. We consider the metastable regime where the temperature is low and the chemical potential is supercritical. In order to achieve the transition from empty to full, the system needs to create a sufficiently large droplet, called critical droplet, which triggers the crossover. It turns out that the critical droplet is close to a disc of a certain deterministic radius, with a boundary that is random and consists of a large number of unit discs that stick out by a small distance. We show how an analysis of the surface fluctuations allows us to derive both a volume term and a surface term in the asymptotics of the average crossover time. Based on joint work with Sabine Jansen (Munich) and Roman Kotecký (Prague). Talk 2 : Metastability for the Widom-Rowlinson model: II. Grains of general shape. Abstract We investigate what happens when the planar discs are replaced by convex grains in arbitrary dimensions whose shape may be random. We identify the size and the shape of the critical droplet as a function of the shape distribution for the grains. We also identify the volume term in the asymptotics of the average crossover time. In addition, we speculate about the surface term, formulating a conjecture about what it should look like. There are various interesting subcases, showing that the shape of the grains has a rather delicate influence on the critical droplet and the average crossover time. Based on joint work with Yogesh Dhandapani (Bangalore) and Roman Kotecký (Prague). Dipartimento di Matematica, Sapienza Università di Roma, Sala di Consiglio Giovedì 9 Febbraio 2023, ore 16:00 *Speaker:* Daniel Ueltschi, University of Warwick *Title*: Quantum spin chains, loop representations, dimerisation *Abstract:* In contrast to their classical counterparts, one-dimensional quantum spin systems are interesting, they have intriguing behaviour, and they are difficult to study. I will describe a family of systems with nearest-neighbour interactions and O(n) symmetry. Its ground state phase diagram is expected to have a rich structure. For large spins it is possible to prove the occurrence of dimerisation in an open domain. The proof involves a loop representation and the method of cluster expansions. This is joint work with Jakob Bjornberg, Peter Muhlbacher, and Bruno Nachtergaele.

Dear all, On Wednesday, February 1st, at 14h00 in Aula Dal Passo at Roma Tor Vergata, RoMaDS (https://www.mat.uniroma2.it/~rds/about.php) will host Giovanni Conforti (École Polytechnique) with the seminar "A probabilistic approach to exponential convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm" Abstract: The entropic optimal transport problem (EOT) is obtained adding an entropic regularisation term in the cost function of the Monge-Kantorovich problem and is nowadays regularly employed in machine learning applications as a more tractable and numerically more stable version of the optimal transport problem. On the other hand, E.Schrödinger asked back in 1931 the question of finding the most likely evolution of a cloud of independent Brownian particles conditionally to observations. The mathematical formulation of his question through large deviations theory is known as the Schrödinger problem and turns out to be fully equivalent to EOT. In this talk, I shall illustrate both viewpoints and then move on to sketch the ideas of a probabilistic method to show exponential convergence of Sinkhorn's algorithm, whose application the heart of the recent successful applications of EOT in statistical machine learning and beyond. In particular, we shall discuss how the proposed method opens new perspective for showing exponential convergence for marginal distribution that are non compactly supported. We then consider their positive temperature analogues, touching upon polymer partition functions. Finally, we arrive at matrix Whittaker processes, which are integrable models of interacting Markov dynamics on matrix spaces. Our main tools are intertwining relations and the theory of Markov functions, which we will review. This talk is based on a joint work with Jonas Arista and Neil O’Connell: https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.14868. Rough McKean-Vlasov dynamics for robust ensemble Kalman filtering Abstract: Motivated by the challenge of incorporating data into misspecified and multiscale dynamical models, we study a McKean-Vlasov equation that contains the data stream as a common driving rough path. This setting allows us to prove well-posedness as well as continuity with respect to the driver in an appropriate rough-path topology. The latter property is key in our subsequent development of a robust data assimilation methodology: We establish propagation of chaos for the associated interacting particle system, which in turn is suggestive of a numerical scheme that can be viewed as an extension of the ensemble Kalman filter to a rough-path framework. Indeed, the richness of the birth and death rates allows modeling a variety of phenomena, ranging from evolutionary dynamics and neuronal modeling, to queueing and reliability theory, for instance. Various methods of analysis have been developed for determining quantities of interest, such as stationary distributions and first-passage-time distributions. The talk is aimed at providing a review of some recent results on growth-evolution models characterized by time-dependent growth rates and their stochastic counterpart described by birth-death processes. The analysis focuses on generalizations of the Gompertz and logistic growth models, and on the related birth-death processes having linear and quadratic rates. A diffusion approximation leading to a time-inhomogeneous geometric Brownian motion is also treated. We also present certain generalizations involving extended birth-death processes on a star-graph defined as a lattice formed by the integers of semiaxes joined at the origin. Specifically, we deal with (i) the analysis of the transient and asymptotic behavior of a multispecies birth-death-immigration process and of a continuous-time multi-type Ehrenfest model, (ii) the construction and the study of suitable diffusion approximations for the considered models, leading to two processes belonging to the class of Pearson diffusions on the spider. *ore 17-18* *Daniele Cappelletti* *Titolo: * Solving the chemical recurrence conjecture in two dimensions *Abstract:* Stochastic reaction networks are continuous-time Markov chains typically used in biology, epidemiology, and population dynamics. The goal is to keep track of the abundance of the different reactants over time. What makes them special from a mathematical point of view is the fact that their qualitative dynamics is described by a finite set of allowed transformation rules, referred to as "reaction graph". A long-standing conjecture is that models with a reaction graph composed by a union of strongly connected components are necessarily positive recurrent, meaning that each single state is positive recurrent. In my talk I will discuss why the conjecture makes intuitive sense and why it is difficult to prove it. I will then show how my collaborators and I adapted Forster-Lyapunov techniques to prove the conjecture in two dimensions. However, the asymptotic distribution of estimators and test statistics can provide a poor approximation of tail areas especially when the sample size is moderate to small. This can lead to inaccurate p-values and confidence intervals. Several techniques, both parametric and nonparametric, have been devised to improve first-order asymptotic approximations, including e.g. Edgeworth expansions, Bartlett's corrections, and bootstrap methods. Here we focus on saddlepoint techniques, introduced into statistics by H. Daniels, and more generally on small sample asymptotic techniques, an expression coined by F. Hampel to express the spirit of these methods. Indeed they provide very accurate approximations of tail probabilities down to small sample sizes and /or out in the tails. Moreover, these approximations exhibit a relative error of order 1/n, an improvement with respect to other available approximations obtained by means of Edgeworth expansions and similar techniques. Statistical guarantees obtained for these methods typically provide asymptotic normality for the problem of estimation of global model parameters under the stochastic block model. In the present work, we consider the case of networks with missing links that is important in application and show that the variational approximation to the maximum likelihood estimator converges at the minimax rate. This provides the first minimax optimal and tractable estimator for the problem of parameter estimation for the stochastic block model. We complement our results with numerical studies of simulated and real networks, which confirm the advantages of this estimator over current methods. **** AVVISO di SEMINARIO Prof. Nikolai Leonenko School of Mathematics, Cardiff University, UK TITOLO: Limit theorems for the first Minkowski functional of Gaussian spatiotemporal random fields with long-memory Abstract The paper [1] addresses the asymptotic analysis of sojourn functionals of spatiotemporal Gaussian random fields with long-range dependence (LRD) in time also known as long memory. Specifically, reduction theorems are derived for local functionals of nonlinear transformation of such fields, with Hermite rank m ? 1, under general covariance structures. These results are proven to hold, in particular, for a family of non?separable covariance structures belonging to Gneiting class. For m = 1, under some general condition on covariance structure of spatiotemporal random field with long memory in time, the properly normalized first Minkowski functional converge in distribution to the normal law. For m = 2, under separability of the spatiotemporal covariance function in space and time, the properly normalized Minkowski functional, involving the modulus of a Gaussian random field, converges in distribution to the Rosenblatt type limiting distribution for a suitable range of the long memory parameter. Some other related results can be found in [2,3]. For spatiotemporal isotropic stationary fields on sphere similar results obtained in Marinucci et al. In this talk we will lay the foundations of Reinforcement Learning and apply it to stochastic control problems first and then Mean Field Games. On the theoretical side we will see some guarantees for the convergence of the approximations, as well as how to use noise to learn the Nash Equilibria of the MFG problem. The problem is essentially solved in the case of domains without boundary, but it remains mostly open in the case of no-slip boundary conditions, due to the difficulty of understanding and modeling generation of vorticity close to the boundary. The solution of this problem could have a deep impact in our understanding of turbulence. In this talk we present a stochastic particle approximation method which allows us to treat 2D Navier-Stokes equations in the case of prescribed vorticity generation. Our approach is almost completely functional analytic based. Moreover we obtain finer convergence results to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations compared to propagation of chaos techniques. The talk is based on a joint work with F. Grotto and M. Maurelli. *Abstract (Grotto):* Focusing on the asymptotic behavior of a couple of relevant geometric functionals, we will discuss analogies and differences between random wave models on hyperbolic space and other geometric settings on which the related theory is by now well-established.
