Questo richiede che, da una parte le aziende si organizzino per l'utilizzo di energia rinnovabile e dall'altro individuino metodi di produzione volti al risparmio energetico. La multinazionale Agilent nella sede torinese si sta muovendo su entrambi questi fronti. Questo progetto di dottorato è in parte finanziato da Agilent ed è rivolto a un ripensamento dei processi produttivi introducendo il vincolo di minimizzare il consumo energetico. Occorre individuare i processi a maggior consumo energetico e studiare come ridurre i consumi o come ottimizzare i tempi di richiesta di energia, evitando momenti di picco energetico. Il progetto partirà dall’analisi statistica di dati esistenti a cui verranno affiancati i dati provenienti da nuovi sensori opportunamente collocati. Il target finale sarà la costruzione di modelli matematici predittivi del consumo energetico dei singoli macchinari e delle linee di produzione. Tali modelli serviranno a ridurre i consumi e ottimizzare la richiesta energetica. Background di fisica e matematica (master in matematica, fisica o ingegneria). Oggi è disponibile una quantità impressionante di dati e una varietà di strumenti statistici e informatici che possono essere applicati per lo studio di tali big data. Per il Piemonte disponiamo di informazioni nello spazio e nel tempo. Tali dati comprendono più di vent'anni di livello di acque sotterranee, portate fluviali, dati meteorologici di ARPA Piemonte e dati satellitari. Unendo modelli matematici specifici e un approccio di machine learning si prevede di valutare quantitativamente le risorse idriche disponibili in un contesto di cambiamento climatico. Inoltre, l'utilizzo di tali risultati suggerirà azioni di prevenzione al fine di limitare i rischi idrogeologici legati ai cambiamenti climatici. L'attuale disponibilità di big data è un aiuto importante per lo sviluppo di modelli realistici o per l'utilizzo di metodi di machine learning. I modelli matematici possono quindi consentire di prevedere possibili rischi e suggerire interventi sul territorio quando ci si concentra su singoli bacini idrografici. Il progetto di dottorato mira a utilizzare i dati di monitoraggio ambientale disponibili per la prevenzione di eventi critici come alluvioni in aree specifiche del Piemonte. Oltre all'utilizzo dei dati disponibili nello spazio e nel tempo, la ricerca comprenderà lo sviluppo di una metodologia a scala di bacino (area di ordine 100 km2). Tale scala è importante per una corretta gestione del territorio e lo sviluppo di modalità adeguate di organizzazione dei dati acquisiti saranno uno degli obiettivi del progetto, con particolare riferimento al bacino della Regione Piemonte. L'utilizzo delle informazioni estratte dai dati consentirà di sviluppare la seconda parte della ricerca, che prevede lo sviluppo di modelli. Il funzionamento idrologico e idraulico di un bacino idrografico in Piemonte sarà studiato attraverso metodi statistici nel dominio del tempo o della frequenza, nonché con metodi di apprendimento automatico e approccio fisico. Particolare enfasi sarà dedicata all'analisi delle piene a scala di bacino con la simulazione di eventi piovosi potenzialmente critici, con e senza l'adozione di tecniche di mitigazione/prevenzione. I risultati, dopo essere stati implementati in WebGIS, consentiranno un'applicazione diretta da parte di decisori, amministratori locali e personale tecnico anche in altri bacini dell'arco alpino. Le reti fognarie di molte zone italiane sono vetuste e con condotti insufficienti a garantire il deflusso di grandi quantità d'acqua. Per affrontare questa criticità si propone la soluzione di studiare un modello di piano fognario e i possibili interventi per migliorarlo con l'azienda (BrianzAcque) che affianca il Gestore del servizio idrico. Con l'espletamento delle attività legate agli step di progetto, che prevedono la messa a punto di modelli predittivi, e i possibili interventi di correzione alla rete, si otterrà un “piano fognario integrato" che permette una visione globale, individua gli interventi di correzione, le priorità e il costo, utili ai fini della pianificazione degli interventi. Il dottorand* deve avere competenze di analisi dati, Data Mining o Machine Learning, per la creazione di modelli predittivi delle serie storiche, preferibilmente con conoscenza e background di processi stocastici. Dear all, The Department of Mathematics of the University of Bologna has an opening for a PhD Scholarship on the project "A mathematical-physics approach to improve energy efficiency in classical and quantum machine learning". The aim of the project is to reduce the computational complexity of machine learning devices, eliminate the enormous redundancy they come with, and drastically cut their energy consumption. The answer requires a paramount detailed knowledge on the principles those machines work on, nowadays still largely lacking. The statistical mechanics approach to the Boltzmann Machines is one of the major and most promising paths toward their clarification. The project plan to use one of the methods of coming from the theory of equilibrium, non-equilibrium, classical and quantum. Topic: OWPS Seminar October 21st Bernard Derrida & Zhan Shi Time: Oct 21, 2021 03:45 PM Paris Renormalisation and disorder: a simple toy model (II) Zhan Shi (AMSS, Chinese Academy of Sciences) After a short review of our understanding of how a weak disorder or a low density of impurities affect the universality class of a phase transition, we will discuss a simple tree-like toy model for which one can prove that, due to disorder, the depinning transition becomes an infinite order transition of the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. This toy model was introduced to understand the depinning transition of a line from a random substrate, one of the simplest problems in the theory of disordered systems. This depinning transition has a long history among physicists and mathematicians. Still the nature of the transition, one of the central questions of the problem, remains unsolved. The latter enables exact frequentist uncertain quantification with Bayesian credible sets at non-asymptotic graph sizes, where posteriors can be simulated well. There turns out to be no proportionality between credible and confidence levels: for given edge probabilities and a desired confidence level, there exists a critical graph size where the required credible level drops sharply from close to one to close to zero. At such graph sizes the frequentist decides to include not most of the posterior support for the construction of his confidence set, but only a small subset of community assignments containing the highest amounts of posterior probability (like the maximum-a-posteriori estimator). It is argued that for the proposed construction of confidence sets, a form of early stopping applies to MCMC sampling of the posterior, which would enable the computation of confidence sets at larger graph sizes. This approach results in parsimonious models that are consistent across different time-scales and show remarkable agreement with econometric data. In this first lecture of two, we will focus on the econometric motivation of rough volatility and explore its consequences for pricing, focusing on the rough Bergomi model. As an application, we will show how to forecast realized variance and the forward variance curve. Gio 21 Ottobre, 4:00-7:00 PM CET Aula Tonelli Jim Gatheral, Baruch College CUNY, New York Titolo: Rough volatility II In this second lecture, we will present the microstructural foundation for rough volatility models. This leads to the class of affine forward variance (AFV models) and more recently to so-called super Heston models, a special case of which is the quadratic rough Heston model. We give a brief overview of recent developments, including numerical solution techniques. Numerical experiments are performed to give intuition for the effect of changing model parameters. Both lectures will be in the form of Jupyter notebooks that will be made available afterwards, including code to reproduce most of the computations.

In particular we extend this framework to include mortality intensities following an affine process under parameter uncertainty, as defined in [2]. This allows both to introduce the definition of a longevity bond under model uncertainty in a consistent way with the classical case under one prior, as well as to compute it by explicit formulas or by numerical methods. We also study conditions to guarantee the existence of a càdlàg modification for the longevity bond’s value process. Furthermore, we show how the resulting market model extended with the longevity bond is arbitrage-free and study arbitrage-free pricing of contingent claims or life insurance liabilities in this setting. Abstract: Given a smooth path X, the signature of a path is the infinite sequence of the iterated integral of X with itself. If X is a stochastic process with an integration structure (e.g. semimartingale), the corresponding signature is the key-object to understand the "lack of continuity" between the solution of a SDE driven by X and the process itself. Often they constitute probabilistic representation of conservative PDEs, called Fokker-Planck equations; In general Fokker-Planck PDEs are well-posed if the initial condition is specified. Here, alternatively, we consider the inverse problem which consists in prescribing the final data: in particular we give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness. We also provide a probabilistic representation of those PDEs in the form of a solution of a McKean type equation corresponding to the time-reversal dynamics of a diffusion process. The research is motivated by some application consisting in representing some semilinear PDEs (typically Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman in stochastic control) fully backwardly. This work is based on a collaboration with L. Izydorczyk (ENSTA), N. Oudhane (EDF), G. It quickly appeared to be a place where geometry and physics met and influenced each others. In this talk, I shall discuss some questions closer to probability and random matrix theory, inspired by the so-called large N limit regime of Euclidean field theories. I will present some old and new theorems about the Yang-Mills measure for two dimensional space-time geometries. Probabilistically yours, Bastien Mallein and Sébastien Martineau -------- Persi Diaconis -- Probability theory for THE random graph Pick two Erdös-Renyi (n,1/2) graphs uniformly at random. What's the chance they are the same (isomorphic)? Small. How small? Well, at most n!/ 2^(n choose 2). When n= 100, that's less than 10^-1300. OK, now let n=infinity. The chance that the two graphs are isomorphic is one (!). This is THE random graph (the Rado graph R). I will review its many non-random models and many strange properties. ? It is a natural limit of the set of all finite graphs (a first order property is true for almost all finite graphs if and only if it holds with probability one in R) and this discontinuity is surprising. In joint work with with Sourav Chatterjee we tried to find finite manifestations: For finite n, the largest isomorphic induced subgraph of a pair has size 4log (n) -2loglog(n)-2log(4/e) +1 (within 1, all logs base 2 in probability when n is large). This matches data amazingly well (e.g. for n more than 30) and illuminates problems in constraint satisfaction. Laurent Mico -- A random walk on THE random graph R Let q(j) be a probability on N={0,1,2,...}. Let R be a model of THE random graph. A Markov chain on N starts at i and moves to one of its neighbor j in R with probability proportional to q(j). This Markov chain has a stationary distribution and we inquire about rates of convergence. Since each vertex is connected to half of the others and the diameter of R is 2, it seems likely that convergence is fast. In some models we show that log* (i) steps are necessary and sufficient for convergence. The proof uses a novel variant of Hardy's inequalities for trees. This is joint work with Sourav Chatterjee and Persi Diaconis. Dear colleagues, we are happy to announce the following online talk: Speaker: Hakima Bessaih (Florida International University) Title: Numerical schemes for the 2d Stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. Abstract: We consider a time discretization scheme of Euler type for the 2d stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on the torus. We prove a mean square rate of convergence. This refines previous results established with a rate of convergence in probability only. Using exponential moment estimates of the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations and a convergence of a localized scheme, we can prove strong convergence of fully implicit and semi-implicit time Euler discretization and also a splitting scheme. The speed of convergence depends on the diffusion coefficient and the viscosity parameter. When the noise is additive, we are able to get strong convergence without localization. The AFV characteristic function may be expressed in terms of the solution of a Volterra integral equation. I will present a rational approximation to the solution of this integral equation in the special case of the rough Heston model. Until now, simulation of AFV models using the Markovian approximation of Abi Jaber and El Euch has proved relatively complicated and time-consuming, I will present a new efficient and easy-to-implement method for simulating AFV models for general kernels. I will present numerical results using the rational approximation as a benchmark.

Title: Infinite dimensional Heston model and sensitivity analysis Abstract: We consider the infinite dimensional Heston stochastic volatility model for the price of a forward contract on a non-storable commodity. We give a representation formula for the forward price and then we consider options written on this. We analyse the sensitivity of the option price to the different parameters in the model with the aim at providing representation formulae for the so-called Greeks. However, being the parameter infinite dimensional, we need to reinterpret the meaning of the Greeks. In our work we use infinite dimensional Malliavin/Skorokhod calculus and a randomisation technique. The presentation is based on joint work with Fred Espen Benth and Iben Simonsen. This random field is defined as the unique centered Gaussian field with covariance kernel given as the resolvent kernel of Graham—Jenne—Mason—Sparling (GJMS) operators of maximal order. The corresponding Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos is a generalization to the 2m-dimensional case of the celebrated Liouville Quantum Gravity measure in dimension two. We study the associated Liouville Brownian motion and random GJMS operator, the higher-dimensional analogues of the 2d Liouville Brownian Motion and of the random Laplacian. Finally, we study the Polyakov–Liouville on the space of distributions on M induced by the copolyharmonic Gaussian field, providing explicit conditions for its finiteness and computing the conformal anomaly. Analyzing insurer trades in corporate bonds during 2002-2018, we show that offerings with worse aftermarket performance are flipped less. When flipping their allocation in an offering, insurers tend to avoid selling to the offering’s underwriters even though underwriters offer better prices. The sensitivity of flipping to aftermarket performance is broadly similar when flipping to underwriters than non-underwriters, which suggests that underwriters discourage flipping in both overpriced and underpriced offerings. Insurers that flip their allocation to underwriters receive less profitable allocations in these underwriters’ subsequent offerings. Overall, our findings suggest that the repeated game nature of the issuance process allows underwriters to partially limit flipping by using their allocation discretion to penalize flippers. /Joint with L. Banks exposed to QE, especially the more illiquid ones, increased lending relatively more at both the intensive and extensive margins after QE. But we also find evidence of substitution. Branches of non-QE-exposed banks contracted lending in areas where QE-exposed banks dominate. Because of this substitution, we find no evidence of an aggregate credit expansion. Our results suggest that QE programs that target a broader swath of the banking system could more effectively expand lending. This condition complexifies significantly the dynamics. In particular, it deprives the system of monotonicity properties, which leaves us with few tools to study the dynamics when it is initially not at equilibrium. JEAN JACOD, Emeritus Professor at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris (Paris 6), on Wednesday, the 22nd at 12:00, will give the following SEMINAR Title: Testing for the Markov Property in a High-Frequency Setting (joint with Yacine Ait-Sahalia) Abstract. The aim is to present a test for the homogeneous Markov property of a one-dimensional process X observed at regularly spaced times over a finite time interval. The frequency goes to infinity, and we test the null hypothesis according to which the spot volatility takes the form sigmat= f(X_t) for some smooth enough non-vanishing function f. The test relies on some Central Limit Theorems related to the local times of a semimartingale. We allow the process X to have jumps, restricted to finite activity. We will mostly consider the case when the process is observed without error, and if time permits we will give a method covering the case where microstrucutre noise is present. All interested people are warmly invited to participate.
