Dear colleagues, I would like to advertise the call for PhD scholarships in Mathematics and PhD scholarships in High Performance Scientific Computing at University of Pisa. Deadline: July 18, 2025, 1pm Rome time zone. We strongly encourage applications of students interested in probability. The research interests of our probability group here in Pisa include: stochastic evolutions (e.g. stochastic partial differential equations, regularization by noise, stochastic fluid dynamics), probabilistic methods in machine learning (e.g. learning dynamics for neural networks), variational problems in commutative and non-commutative setting (e.g. quantum probability, random optimal transport, Malliavin calculus), interacting particle systems (e.g. propagation of chaos, large deviations). Dear colleagues, (With apologies for cross-posting) On 26 June 2025 at 2pm (CET) Marta Leocata (LUISS Guido Carli, Department of AI, Data and Decision Sciences) will present an online seminar whose title is: Two applications of multi-agent models in economic and social systems Abstract: In this talk, we present an overview of mathematical models that capture the behavior of myopic agents—who rely on short-term, local information in their decision-making—and strategic agents, who consider the long-term consequences of their actions within interactive environments. These concepts will be illustrated through two applications in economic and social contexts: a multi-agent model for the co-evolution of preferences and actions in the emergence of social norms (joint work with Michele Aleandri, LUISS, and Laura Marcon, CNR), and a Mean Field Game approach to the Emission Trading System (joint work with Giulia Livieri, LSE, and Gianmarco Del Sarto, TU Darmstadt). Oggi, martedì 24 giugno 2025 alle ore 14:30 Dario Trevisan, Dipartimento di Matematica , Università di Pisa , terrà il seminario: Convergenza quantitativa delle reti neurali profonde ai processi gaussiani Astratto In questo seminario, esploriamo la convergenza quantitativa di ampie reti neurali profonde con pesi gaussiani a processi gaussiani, stabilendo nuove velocità per la loro approssimazione gaussiana. Mostriamo che la distanza di Wasserstein tra l'output della rete e la sua controparte gaussiana scala inversamente alla larghezza della rete, con limiti applicabili a qualsiasi insieme finito di input in specifiche condizioni di non degenerazione delle covarianze. Inoltre, estendiamo la nostra analisi al framework bayesiano, studiando i posteriori esatti per le reti neurali, quando dotate di priori gaussiani e funzioni di verosimiglianza regolari, ma forniamo anche recenti progressi nell'approssimazione quantitativa di reti addestrate tramite discesa del gradiente nel regime NTK. Abstract: In 2012, Fyodorov, Hiary, and Keating discovered a new connection between random matrices and extremal values of logarithmically correlated fields, such as branching Brownian motion and the 2D Gaussian Free Field. In particular, they conjectured that extreme statistics of random characteristic polynomials of unitary matrices belong to the universality class of logarithmically correlated fields, which was first identified by Bramson in his seminal work on branching Brownian motion. I will review several contributions in proving this connection and present some new recent works establishing new connections of characteristic polynomials of non-Hermitian matrices and two- and three-dimensional logarithmically correlated fields. Löcherbach (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University) I will give an overview of recent results about mean field limits for systems of interacting point processes modeling spiking (biological) neurons. I will start with a short introduction to the functioning of neurons and the modeling of their spiking activity by stochastic integrate and fire models and then focus on a particular class of models which are stochastic intensity based processes. Then we will discuss mean field limits and propagation of chaos results for large homogeneous systems of neurons and see how the limit is described by a McKean-Vlasov type equation driven by Poisson random measure. A second part of the talk is devoted to the study of systems with random synaptic weights in a diffusive scaling. We will see how this setting leads to conditional propagation of chaos and how the convergence can be obtained by means of a new martingale problem. Finally, if time permits, I will also discuss the longtime behavior both of the finite and the limit system of neurons. The second part of the talk is based on joint work with Xavier Erny and Dasha Loukianova. Strong conditional propagation of chaos for systems of interacting particles with nearly stable jumps E. Marini (Dauphine-PSL Paris) We consider a system of N interacting particles, described by SDEs driven by Poisson random measures, where the coefficients depend on the empirical measure of the system. Every particle jumps with a rate depending on its position. When this happens, all the other particles of the system receive the same random kick, distributed according to a heavy-tailed random variable belonging to the domain of attraction of an α-stable law, and scaled by N−1/α, where α ∈ (0, 2) \ {1}. We call these jumps collateral jumps. Moreover, in the case 0 < α < 1, the jumping particle itself undergoes a macroscopic, main jump. Similar systems are used to model networks of interacting neurons; in that context, main and collateral jumps represent, respectively, the hyperpolarization of a neuron after a spike and the synaptic inputs received by post-synaptic neurons from pre-synaptic ones. We prove that our system satisfies the conditional propagation of chaos property: as N → +∞, the finite particle system converges to an infinite exchangeable system that obeys a McKean–Vlasov SDE driven by an α-stable process. Bin Yu (Statistics, EECS, Center for Computational Biology, and Simons Institute UC Berkeley) terrà un seminario dal titolo: Sparse dictionary learning and deep learning in practice and theory Abstract: Sparse dictionary learning has a long history and produces wavelet-like filters when fed with natural image patches, corresponding to the V1 primary visual cortex of the human brain. Wavelets as local Fourier Transforms are interpretable in physical sciences and beyond. In this talk, we will first describe adaptive wavelet distillation (AWD) to turn black-box deep learning models interpretable in cosmology and cellular biology problems while improving predictive performance. Then we present theoretical results that, under simple sparse dictionary models, gradient descent in auto-encoder fitting converges to one point on a manifold of global minima, and which minimum depends on the batch size. In particular, we show that when using a small batch-size as in stochastic gradient descent (SGD) a qualitatively different type of â€œfeature selectionâ€ occurs. In this work, we aim at explaining the undeniable success of GANs by interpreting them as probabilistic generative models. In this view, GANs transform a distribution over latent variables Z into a distribution over inputs X through a function parameterized by a neural network, which is usually referred to as the generator. This probabilistic interpretation enables us to cast the GAN adversarial-style optimization as a proxy for marginal likelihood optimization. More specifically, it is possible to show that marginal likelihood maximization with respect to model parameters is equivalent to the minimization of the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between the true data generating distribution and the one modeled by the GAN. By replacing the KL divergence with other divergences and integral probability metrics we obtain popular variants of GANs such as f-GANs, Wasserstein-GANs, and Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD)-GANs. This extension introduces a cost for information acquisition, transforming the classical formulation of Shiryaev (1967) into a joint problem of filtering, control, and optimal stopping. Problems of this kind arise in adaptive experimental design and real-time inference across domains such as healthcare, finance, and engineering, where information is costly and decision-making must be timely. Our framework accommodates a host of classification losses and general running costs on the control process. Despite the added complexity, the problem admits a remarkably simple and semi-explicit solution that exhibits structural parallels with the classical setting. This work highlights a rare instance in which a triple problem—combining inference, control, and stopping—remains analytically tractable. In this talk, I will discuss a model in which such interpolations are found by minimising an action functional of the acceleration, and present recent results obtained in collaboration with G. Brigati and J. Maas (ISTA), arXiv:2502.15665. The first result is a fluid-dynamic equivalent formulation of the model, previously conjectured by Y. Chen, G. Conforti, and T. T. Georgiou. We complete the formal argument outlined by the aforementioned authors through the introduction of two new mathematical ingredients. ABSTRACT: We establish a stochastic maximum principle for controlled stochastic differential equations with delay and control-dependent noise, without convexity assumptions on the control space. The cost functional depends on both present and delayed states, modeled via general finite measures. For measures with square-integrable densities, we employ infinite-dimensional reformulation and BSDE techniques; for general measures, we apply anticipated BSDEs and weak convergence methods. We further analyze the case of delay measures with $L^p$-densities ($p \in (1,2)$), deriving a generalized mild backward equation beyond Hilbertian settings. However, the approach is computationally expensive. In this work, we propose a novel method that incorporates numerical approximations to alleviate the most computationally expensive steps, thereby achieving substantial reductions in runtime. Our approach retains the flexibility to approximate the target posterior distribution to an arbitrary degree of accuracy, and is scalable with respect to both the size of the dataset and the number of computational cores. In this work, we aim at explaining the undeniable success of GANs by interpreting them as probabilistic generative models. In this view, GANs transform a distribution over latent variables Z into a distribution over inputs X through a function parameterized by a neural network, which is usually referred to as the generator. This probabilistic interpretation enables us to cast the GAN adversarial-style optimization as a proxy for marginal likelihood optimization. More specifically, it is possible to show that marginal likelihood maximization with respect to model parameters is equivalent to the minimization of the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between the true data generating distribution and the one modeled by the GAN. By replacing the KL divergence with other divergences and integral probability metrics we obtain popular variants of GANs such as f-GANs, Wasserstein-GANs, and Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD)-GANs. This connection has profound implications because of the desirable properties associated with marginal likelihood optimization, such as (i) lack of overfitting, which explains the success of GANs, and (ii) allowing for model selection, which opens to the possibility of obtaining parsimonious generators through architecture search. Monday, 9 June 2025, 12.15-13.15 Seminar room, third floor, building 14, Via Bonardi 9, Milano (Leonardo Campus) Marco Tolotti (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia) Title: Market Dynamics, Learning, and the Equity Premium Puzzle in an Agent-Based Model of Information Acquisition. Abstract: We analyze a financial market with a large number of investors who use an imitation-based learning mechanism to choose among various strategies that differ in the amount and quality of information they incorporate. Agents’ strategies evolve through a straightforward learning mechanism in which traders occasionally imitate more successful strategies adopted by peers they encounter. In this context, equilibrium is defined as a state where investors, on average, win half the time and lose in the remaining periods. Through an agent-based model, we show that at equilibrium, most investors rely on a limited number of strategies. In most scenarios, two strategies dominate: overly cautious traders, who hold little equity and capture the largest market share, and informed traders, who achieve higher average profits. Our model can help to justify the existence of an equity premium puzzle: in equilibrium, the higher mean profit of informed investors is associated with a median profit that is equal to that of more prudent or misinformed investors. Title: Convergence of quantum neural networks at infinite width Abstract: Quantum neural networks constitute the quantum version of deep neural models. These new models are based on quantum circuits and generate functions given by the expectation values of a quantum observable measured on the output of a quantum circuit made by parametric one-qubit and two-qubit gates. The parameters of the circuit encode both the input data and the parameters of the model itself. These parameters are typically optimized by gradient descent, which involves iterative adjustment to minimize a cost function and improve the performance of the quantum circuit in the processing and analysis of data. Significant progress has been made in addressing the question of whether training can perfectly fit the training examples while simultaneously avoiding overfitting. A fundamental breakthrough has been the proof that, in the limit of infinite width, the probability distribution of the function generated by a deep neural network trained on a supervised learning problem converges to a Gaussian process. Recent developments have inspired renewed interest in quantum machine learning, raising the question of whether quantum neural networks exhibit analogous properties. In this presentation, I will explore some of the recent advancements in this area, highlighting key insights and findings. This talk is based on joint collaborations with Giacomo de Palma, Filippo Girardi, and Davide Pastorello. In recent years, with the rapid progress in the study of the hydrodynamics of integrable systems, there has been a growing interest in BBS with random initial distribution. In this talk, we consider the scaling limits for a tagged soliton in the BBS starting from certain stationary distribution. This talk is based on a joint work with Stefano Olla and Makiko Sasada. Probabilistic aspects of integrable systems Makiko Sasada (University of Tokyo) The KdV equation and the Toda lattice are classical integrable systems, with the box-ball system (BBS) as their ultra-discrete analogue. The BBS has been studied from various viewpoints such as tropical geometry, combinatorics, and cellular-automaton. Recently, probabilistic approaches to the BBS—such as the Pitman transform and analysis of i.i.d.-type invariant measures—have advanced rapidly and are also applicable to discrete KdV and Toda systems. Connections to Yang-Baxter maps have further deepened this research topic. In this talk, I will provide an overview of these developments. The value function V which is defined in a classical way, does not satisfy the Dynamic Programming Principle (DPP for short). Indeed, we show that V solely satisfies the one-sided DPP. For this reason we introduce subtly a novel value function ϑ, which is closely related to the original value function V, so that a characterisation of ϑ as a solution of a partial differential equation (PDE) also characterises V. We establish the DPP for ϑ. By using an intrinsic notion of viscosity solution, initially introduced in Burzoni, Ignazio, Reppen and Soner and specifically tailored to our framework, we show that the value function ϑ is a viscosity solution to a Master Bellman equation on a subset of the Wasserstein space of probability measures with second order moment. The uniqueness of the viscosity solution is proved for coefficients which depend on the time and the joint law of the control process and the controlled process. The talk is based on joint work with Juan Li (SDU, Qingdao and Weihai) and Zhanxin Li (SDU, Weihai). ==== about the speaker ==== Rainer Buckdahn studied Mathematics at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) and obtained his doctoral degree, directed by H.-J. Engelbert, in 1985. After that he held a position at the Humboldt University Berlin and completed his habilitation in 1992. In 1994 he became a professor at the University of Western Brittany (Brest, France). Rainer Buckdahn is a leading specialist in stochastic process theory with an emphasis on stochastic control and differential games, stochastic differential equations, various types of backward stochastic differential equations, and stochastic partial differential equations. Rainer Buckdahn was awarded a fellowship by the French Ministry of Research and Technology and a Heisenberg grant by the German "Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft". He is also a member of the Academic Faculty of the "Research Centre for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences Centre" at Shandong University (China). Thursday, 5 June 2025, 12.15-13.15 Seminar room, third floor, building 14, Via Bonardi 9, Milano (Leonardo Campus) Olimpia Carradori (University of Zurich) Title: Insurers' carbon underwriting policies Abstract: Insurance companies can influence the net-zero transition by limiting coverage for carbon-intensive projects. We study the adoption, structure, and effects of carbon underwriting policies among the world’s largest insurance groups. Using novel mine-level insurance data, we show that insurers with coal policies reduce the number of insured mines by approximately 16%, insured coal volumes by 56%, and make continued coverage significantly less likely. Implementation is often incomplete, and some insurers expand coverage despite commitments. Affected mines tend to reduce output, cut the number of employees, and are more likely to be idled in subsequent periods. Joint work with Felix von Meyerinck and Zacharias Sautner. This talk focuses on synchronization-based and feedback control methods for data assimilation, which dynamically align model trajectories with observed data. Techniques such as nudging, observer-based schemes, and coupling strategies will be discussed, highlighting how they correct for uncertainty and stabilize the system in real time. Applications include chaotic systems and models governed by stochastic dynamics. *ore 14:30: *Sam Power (University of Bristol) *titolo*: Gradient Flow Methods for Statistical Computation - Trends and Trajectories *abstract*: When conducting statistical estimation and inference, it is relatively commonplace that the dominant computational burden takes the form of an optimisation task. This has long been recognised for tasks of parameter estimation, though there is an increasing recognition that other tasks of interest can be fruitfully interpreted as optimisation tasks over a space of probability measures, or even over some 'hybrid' space involving both parameters and measures. In this talk, I will survey some trends in this area, focusing on how this high-level perspective finds use in both analysis of popular existing algorithms and synthesis of novel algorithms. The most natural Markov jump process representation of the model is eschewed for reasons of computational efficiency, and replaced by a stochastic differential equation representation. This is further approximated to give a tractable Gaussian process, that is, the linear noise approximation (LNA). Unless the observation model linking the LNA to data is both linear and Gaussian, the observed data likelihood remains intractable. Unlike previous approaches that use the LNA in this setting, two approaches for marginalising over the latent process are considered: a correlated pseudo-marginal method and analytic marginalisation via a Gaussian approximation of the noise model. These approaches are compared using synthetic data with the best performing method applied to real data consisting of removal incidence of Oak Processionary moth nests in Richmond Park, London. 2nd Seminar: 11-11.30am UK time Speaker: Henrik Häggström<https://research.chalmers.se/en/person/henhagg> (Chalmers University) Title: Simulation-based inference for stochastic nonlinear mixed-effects models with applications in systems biology Abstract: We propose a novel methodology for Bayesian inference in hierarchical mixed-effects models. By building on our work [1], we construct a simulation-based inference (SBI) framework that is highly scalable, where amortized approximations to the likelihood and the parameters posterior are first obtained, and these are rapidly refined for each individual dataset, to ultimately approximate the parameters posterior across many individuals. Unlike the current state-of-art SBI methods, which use neural networks, our approximations are expressed via Gaussian mixture models, leading to easily trainable, parsimonious yet expressive surrogate models of both the likelihood function and the posterior distribution. The methodology is exemplified via stochastic differential equation mixed-effects models to describe translation kinetics after mRNA transfection, however the methodology is general and can accommodate other types of stochastic and deterministic models. We compare our approximate inference with exact pseudomarginal inference and show that our methodology is fast and competitive.
