Titolo: Well-posedness of semilinear SPDEs with singular drift: a variational approach Speaker: Luca Scarpa ( Department of Mathematics University College London, UK) Abstract. Well-posedness is proved for singular semilinear SPDEs on a smooth bounded domain D in R^n. The linear part is associated to a coercive linear maximal monotone operator on L^2(D) while the drift is represented by a multivalued maximal monotone graph everywhere defined on R, on which no growth nor smoothness conditions are required. Moreover, the noise is given by a cylindrical Wiener process on a Hilbert space U, with a stochastic integrand taking values in the Hilbert-Schmidt operators from U to L^2(D): classical Lipschitz-continuity hypotheses for the diffusion coefficient are assumed. The proof consists in approximating the equation, finding uniform estimates both pathwise and in expectation on the approximated solutions, and then passing to the limit using compactness and lower semicontinuity results. Finally, possible generalizations are discussed. Conditionally strong quasi-stationary times and metastability Abstract: We generalise the notion of strong stationary time to define a conditionally strong quasi-stationary times that turns out to be a crucial tool for the study of metastability in a completely general setting. 15:00 Davide Gabrielli (Università dell'Aquila). Exchange dynamics, reversibility and tournaments Abstract: We consider a generalization to N types of particles of the classic ABC model. We have particles of different types stochastically evolving on a one dimensional lattice with an exchange dynamics. The rates of exchange are local but under suitable conditions the dynamics is reversible with a Gibbsian like invariant measure with long range interactions. We discuss geometrically the conditions of reversibility on a ring that correspond to a gradient condition on the graph of configurations or equivalently to a divergence free condition on a graph structure associated to the types of particles. We show that much of the information on the interactions between particles can be encoded in associated \emph{Tournaments} that are a special class of oriented graphs. In particular we show that the interactions of reversible models are corresponding to strongly connected tournaments. The possible minimizers of the energies are in correspondence with the Hamiltonian cycles of the tournaments. We can then determine how many and which are the possible minimizers of the energy looking at the structure of the associated tournament. As a byproduct we obtain a probabilistic proof of a classic Theorem of Camion on the existence of Hamiltonian cycles for strongly connected tournaments. Using these results we obtain in the case of an equal number of k types of particles new representations of the Hamiltonians in terms of translation invariant k-body long range interactions. We show that when k=3,4 the minimizer of the energy is always unique up to translations. Starting from the case k=5 it is possible to have more than one minimizer. In particular it is possible to have minimizers for which particles of the same type are not joined together in single clusters. Joint work with F. Roncari. 15:45 - 16:00 Break 16:00. ************************************************************************ STATISTICS SEMINARS @ COLLEGIO CARLO ALBERTO ************************************************************************ Venerdi 10 Novembre 2017, alle ore 12:00, presso la nuova sede del Collegio Carlo Alberto, in Piazza Arbarello 8, Torino, si terra' il seguente seminario: ------------------------------------------------ Krzysztof LATUSZYŃSKI (University of Warwick) Exact Bayesian inference for discretely observed jump-diffusions The standard approach to inference for parametric diffusion processes relies on discretisation techniques (such as the Euler method) that introduce an approximation error difficult to quantify especially for discontinuous models, like jump-diffusions. In this talk, I will present methodology for exact inference that avoids discretisation errors and allows to design MCMC samplers targeting the exact posterior distribution of the diffusion parameters and diffusion path between observations. The approach is based on Bernoulli Factory type subroutines, and is a general alternative to pseudo-marginal inference. StaTalks are one-day workshops on statistical topics during which the hosting group introduces and overviews the main research interests of their members. Saleri" VI piano, Dipartimento di Matematica, Politecnico di Milano, nell'ambito delle iniziative MOX, si svolgerà il seguente seminario: Relatore: Livio Finos, Università degli Studi di Padova Titolo: Robust testing of generalized linear models by sign-flipping score contributions Sommario: We consider the problem of testing a generalized linear model (GLM) with possibly misspecified distribution. In this case, the traditional tests lose their good properties, since the Fisher information is estimated under incorrect assumptions. Here we present a testing approach that is based on random sign-flipping of score contributions, while not requiring any estimate of the Fisher information. As long as the link function is correct and under mild assumptions, our method is robust (i.e. asymptotically exact, consist) against several types of model misspecification, such as overdispersion, heteroscedasticity and, in some cases, ignored nuisance parameters. Among the other features, the methods extends easily to the multivariate (and multiple testing) framework, since it deals efficiently with the dependence of univariate tests without the need of estimating it. Avviso di seminario, Università di Trento "Regularization by noise for transport and kinetic equations" Martedì 31 ottobre 2017 *Luogo:* Dipartimento di Matematica, via Sommarive, 14 - Povo (TN) - Aula Seminari "-1" *Ore*: 11.00 - *Relatore: *Ennio Fedrizzi (Applied Mathematical Department, ENSTA ParisTech) *Abstract: *For some differential equations the addition of a carefully chosen, random noise term can produce a regularising effect (e.g. solutions are more regular, or restored uniqueness). I will first mention a few easy examples (ODEs) to introduce some of these regularising mechanisms, then detail two cases where we have regularisation for a PDE: the linear transport equation and a kinetic equation with force term. I will present some classical results for these two equations, related to well-posedness and regularity of solutions, that in the stochastic setting can be obtained under weaker hypothesis. These results are based on a careful analysis of the stochastic characteristics and the regularising properties of some associated parabolic/elliptic PDE. If time allows, I will conclude by introducing a new strategy of proof based on stochastic exponentials and an associated parabolic PDE, which allows to obtain, under even weaker hypothesis, well-posedness for stochastic PDEs in a class of solutions which are only regular in mean. Clearly we expect - ceteris paribus - that placing an order will move the price to the disadvantage of the agent. This price movement is called market impact. Following Kyle and Obizhaeva we apply dimensional analysis - a line of arguments wellknown in classical physics - to analyze to which extent the square root law applies. This universal law claims that the market impact is proportional to the square root of the size of the order. The mathematical tools of this analysis reside on elementary linear algebra. Dear all, we are pleased to announce that the fifth edition of the StaTalk series will be held at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padua, on November, 17, 2017. StaTalks are one-day workshops on statistical topics during which the hosting group introduces and overviews the main research interests of their members. Aimed at Master’s and PhD students, as well as at post-docs and young researchers, StaTalks are intended to be informal gatherings which allow for a more proficient interaction between presenters and participants. They typically feature some introductory tutorials on the main workshop theme and a few seminars that overview more advanced research topics, still kept at an expository level. StaTalks are thus a great opportunity to become acquainted with the workshop main topic, as well as to share and update one's knowledge on the interface of Statistical research in an easy and informal atmosphere. The topic of this fifth edition will cover many areas of research currently undergoing at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padua ranging from methodological statistics to demography. The cost-effectiveness or business-cycle smoothing of international diversification is not always at work. How can the empirical evidence be rationalized, then? We show that diversification gains from international expansion can reduce risk margins and Solvency requirements due to longevity risk. Gains are more pronounced in a low-interest rates regime. To show that result, we build parsimonious continuous-time model for longevity risk, that captures the dependence across different ages in different populations. We define a diversification index and measure diversification gains in capital requirements according to the current regulation. We present a calibrated example, based on annuity portfolios of UK and Italian males. The results of our application show that diversification gains, evaluated as the reduction in the portfolio risk margin following the international expansion, may be non-negligible. Tai-Ho WANG (Baruch College, City University of New York) "Implied volatility and its related financial instruments: modeling and pricing" Abstract: Implied volatility modeling has been a mainstream research in academia and industry almost since the trading of options was introduced to the financial world. In this talk, we review stylized facts of implied volatility in equity market, followed by an introduction to the commonly used models that captures partly the stylized facts. The models include local volatility model, stochastic volatility model, local-stochastic volatility, and the fractional volatility model. The last in the list has been regaining great attentions these days. Numerical pricing of vanilla options and calibration of implied volatilities under these models will be briefly discussed. We conclude the talk by the pricing of financial instruments that are directly or indirectly related to implied volatilities. Dimitri Lorenzani (European Commission, Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs) " The European Commission's 2017 Country Report: analytical insights" Abstract: In the 2017 Country Report, the European Commission assessed Italy's economy in the light of the economic priorities established through the 2017 Annual Growth Survey: (i) boosting investment; (ii) pursuing structural reforms; and (iii) ensuring responsible fiscal policies. The presentation aims to provide insights into some of the analytical work underpinning the European Commission's findings. The Country Report indicates that, despite some important reforms in recent years, significant structural weaknesses in diverse policy areas continue to undermine Italy's productivity growth, slowing the correction of Italy's excessive macroeconomic imbalances. In particular, the high public debt remains a major source of vulnerability for the Italian economy given the low potential growth and a still fragile fiscal position. Moreover, the competitiveness gap of the Italian economy vis-à-vis the rest of the euro area persists also due to the insufficient innovation capacity of Italian firms. The legacies of the long-lasting crisis also weigh on Italy's growth prospects since sizeable non-performing loans hamper banks' ability to support investment, while long-term and youth unemployment remain high.

The DeepRiemann project aims at the design and analysis of novel training algorithms for Neural Networks in Deep Learning, by applying notions of Riemannian optimization and differential geometry. The task of the training a Neural Network is studied by employing tools from Optimization over Manifolds and Information Geometry, by casting the learning process to an optimization problem defined over a statistical manifold, i.e., a set of probability distributions. The project is highly interdisciplinary, with competences spanning from Machine Learning to Optimization, Deep Learning, Statistics, and Differential Geometry. The objectives of the project are multiple and include both theoretical and applied research, together with industrial activities oriented to transfer knowledge, from the institute to a startup or spin-off of the research group. Speaker: Fabio Martinelli Title: Bootstrap percolation and interacting particle systems with kinetic constraints Abstract: Recent years have seen a great deal of progress in understanding the behavior of bootstrap percolation models, a particular class of monotone cellular automata. In the two-dimensional lattice, there is now a quite satisfactory understanding of their evolution starting from a random initial condition, with a strikingly beautiful universality picture for their critical behavior (length and time scales). Much less is known for their non-monotone stochastic counterpart, namely kinetically constrained models (KCM). In KCMs the state of each vertex which could be infected by the bootstrap percolation rules is resampled (independently among the vertices) at rate one by tossing a p-coin. In particular, the infection can also heal, hence the non-monotonicity. Besides their connection with bootstrap percolation, KCMs have a strong interest in their own: as p ↓ 0 they display some of the most striking features of the liquid/glass transition, a major and still largely open problem in condensed matter physics. In this talk, after an introductory first part, I shall discuss (i) some recent conjectures relating the universality behavior of critical KCMs to their bootstrap percolation counterpart and (ii) some very recent progress towards proving the above conjectures. EVIDENCE FROM GROUPED DATA We examine the effects of monetary policy on income inequality in Japan using a novel econometric approach that jointly estimates the Gini coefficient based on micro-level grouped data of households and the dynamics of macroeconomic quantities. Our results indicate different effects on income inequality depending on the monetary policy measure under consideration: A traditional rate increase decreases income inequality, whereas a reduction of asset purchases leads to more inequality.
