AVVISO SEMINARI DI GEOMETRIA mercoledì 4 dicembre Aula Magna, Dipartimento di Matematica • 14:30--15:30 Joseph Ayoub (Zurigo) Titolo: Anabelian representations of the motivic Galois group Abstract I will discuss some ongoing work aiming at studying the action of the motivic Galois group on fundamental groups of algebraic varieties conveniently completed. -- • 16:00--17:00 Federico Binda (Milano) Titolo: Triangulated categories of log-motives over a field Abstract In this talk, I will give an overview of the construction of a triangulated category of motives for log smooth log schemes over a field k, based on the notion of finite log correspondence, in analogy to Voevodsky’s DM(k). The affine line is replaced in this context by the “cube” (P^1, \infty), i.e. the log scheme P^1_1 with log structure coming from the divisor at infinity, as one does in the theory of motives with modulus à la Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki. This is a joint work in progress with Doosung Park (Zurich) and Paul Arne Ostvaer (Oslo). Colloqui della Classe di Scienze - Anno Accademico 2019/2020 Mercoledì 27 novembre 2019 ore 15:00 Sala Azzurra Palazzo della Carovana Nicola Armaroli *(Research Director – Istituto ISOF-CNR, PHEEL Unit)* terrà un seminario dal titolo *“A glimpse into the energy conundrum”* Abstract: We use energy at virtually every instant of the day with a profusion never experienced by previous generations. This entails considerable impact on the environment, the climate, the economy and, more generally, on international relations. The seminar will provide a broad view of the global energy scenario, emphasizing the formidable progress of some renewable technologies in the last decade. The energy transition to sustainable technologies will be a long and difficult process, which requires profound technological, economic and social change, including (i) a rational use of the limited mineral resources of the Earth, which are needed to manufacture converters and accumulators of renewable flows, (ii) technologies with high energy return on energy invested, (iii) reduction of primary consumption in affluent countries and (iv) a lessening of inequalities in the access to energy among different regions of the world. The biggest challenge to face is the immense scale of the energy transition to undertake, in a planet populated by over 9 billion people in 2050 and subject to increasing climate and resource constraints. A PDE for the evolution of the their dynamic ( the Smoluchowski equation ) coupled with a fluid will be introduced. On the basis of few theoretical results and physical experiments I will propose an investigation of rod particles sedimentation. The nature of the talk is purely explorative. SEMINARIO DI MATEMATICA *Martedì 5 novembre 2019* ore 16:15 *Scuola Normale Superiore* Pisa Aula Mancini *Niki Myrto Mavraki* *(University of Basel**)* Terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Arithmetic equidistribution and small points in families of elliptic curves ” *Abstract:* *Bogomolov’s conjecture (now a theorem following work of Zhang and Ullmo) concerns the geometry of points with small canonical height on abelian varieties. We prove an analogous result in the setting of families of products of elliptic curves. This extends theorems by Masser and Zannier in the theme of unlikely intersections. In doing so, we establish an equidistribution result. In this talk, I will discuss this result as well as a generalization of it obtained recently. I will also describe some applications of our work towards a Bogomolov-type extension of a related result by Barroero and Capuano. **This is joint work with Laura DeMarco.* Tutti gli interessati sono invitati a partecipare. SEMINARIO DI MATEMATICA *Lunedì 28 ottobre 2019* ore 14:00 *Scuola Normale Superiore* Pisa Aula Bianchi Scienze *Douglas Lundholm* *(**Uppsala Universitet**)* Terrà un seminario dal titolo: “Exchange and exclusion for non-abelian anyons” *Abstract:* Anyons are effective particles arising in certain 2D quantum systems and having properties intermediate to bosons and fermions. Roughly speaking, they may be defined by representing an exchange of coordinates of the many-body wave function by an arbitrary complex phase (abelian anyons) or, more generally, a unitary matrix (non-abelian anyons). I will give an introduction to anyons and discuss how to extend many-body methods of exchange and exclusion to the case of non-abelian anyons, focusing on two of the most popular such models: the Fibonacci and the Ising anyon models. *Colloqui della Classe di Scienze * Anno Accademico 2018/2019 Mercoledì 30 ottobre 2019 ore 15:00 *Scuola Normale Superiore* Sala Azzurra Palazzo della Carovana Alfio Quarteroni *Politecnico di Milano, Italia, and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland (professor emeritus)* Terrà un seminario dal titolo: *“**Taking Mathematics to Heart”* *Abstract:* In this presentation I will highlight the interplay between data science and computational science to efficiently solve real life large scale problems . The leading application that I will address is the numerical simulation of the heart function. The motivation behind this interest is that cardiovascular diseases unfortunately represent one of the leading causes of death in Western Countries. Mathematical models based on first principles allow the description of the blood motion in the human circulatory system, as well as the interaction between electrical, mechanical and fluid-dynamical processes occurring in the heart. This is a classical environment where multi-physics processes have to be addressed. Appropriate numerical strategies can be devised to allow an effective description of the fluid in large and medium size arteries, the analysis of physiological and pathological conditions, and the simulation, control and shape optimization of assisted devices or surgical prostheses. This presentation will address some of these issues and a few representative applications of clinical interest.
