martedi' 30-05-2006 (14:00) - Centro di Ricerca Matematica Ennio de Giorgi Collegio Puteano Pietro POGGI-CORRADINI (Kansas State University) : On a theorem of Landau and Toeplitz SEMINARI DI SISTEMI DINAMICI OLOMORFI (e dintorni) ABSTRACT: The now canonical proof of Schwarz's Lemma appeared in a 1907 paper of Carath'eodory, who attributed it to Erhard Schmidt. Since then, Schwarz's Lemma has acquired considerable fame, with multiple extensions and generalizations. Much less known is that, in the same year 1907, Landau and Toeplitz obtained a similar result where the diameter of the image set takes over the role of the maximum modulus of the function. Conferenza di ANALISI ARMONICA Giovedì 1 giugno 2006 ore 15.00 Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa (Aula Mancini) Elias M. Stein Princeton University Terrà una conferenza dal titolo: "Some discrete analogues in harmonic analysis" Abstract We will review and survey the background and some recent results concerning discrete analogues that arise in harmonic analysis. When the corresponding R^n results involve "curvature", the passage to their discrete analogues requires estimates for exponential sums of the kind that are used in the circle method. In the classical setting these exponential sums are scalar-valued, but here one needs operator-valued analogues. This will be illustrated in the situation of the Heisenberg group, where the curvature is inherent in its underlying symplectic form.
