Prof. David Elworthy - University of Warwick
"Functions of finite energy in finite and infinite dimensions"
Abstract: If the derivative of f is square integrable must be also f,
at least up to a constant? If not why not?
This simple question will be used to introduce some concepts in
geometric analysis in finite and infinite dimensions.
After some brief, introductory, comments on L2 cohomology of finite dimensional
Riemannian manifolds and the role of spectral gaps, I will consider some
infinite dimensional cases starting with paths on Euclidean spaces and
followed by manifolds of paths on Riemannian manifolds.
Here the basic Geometric Analysis is Stochastic Analysis and results from
the latter play a key role.

* SEMINARI
** Settimana dal
17/11/2003
al 23/11/2003.
**Lunedi' , 17-11-2003* *Benoit BERTRAND* : Seminario di Geometria Reale/
Intersection of Tropical Curves/
ore: 15:00:00, aula: Sala Seminari
*Abstract:* /After restating the definition of tropical curves and
recalling the needed tools, I will give examples of intersections of two
curves in very low degree, highlighting the fact that generically they
behave nicely but not always. I will then explain the hypotheses under
which one can state a reasonnable "Bezout" theorem and try to give an
idea of the proof. If time allows, I might state a tropical version of
"Bernstein" theorem. This talk, based on [RGST], is meant to accessible
to anyone and clearer than my previous one./

Martedi' , 18-11-2003* *Francois Costantino* /:
Ombre e complessità di varietà di dimensione 3/
ore: 15:00:00, aula: Sala Seminari
24/11/2003
al 30/11/2003.
*
*Martedi' , 25-11-2003*
*Francesco Costantino* /: Ombre branched di varietà di dimensione 4./
ore: 15:00:00, aula: Sala Seminari

The Industrial Days are an effort of MIRIAM (Milan Research centre for
Industrial and Applied Mathematics) for establishing a link (a
"communication channel") between Academia (methods) and Industry
(applications). The intention is to reinforce awareness in both Academia
and Industry about the increasing role of Mathematical Methods and Tools
for the design of complex products in various areas of industrial interest
(ICT, Mechanics, Electronics, Finance, Medicine, etc.). Mastering
complexity requires the sharing of different tools and competences by
different actors. The Industrial Days offer to all interested researchers
the opportunity to observe some real industrial problems and the relevant
innovative mathematical methods used. The need for further contributions
from mathematics to improve or provide better solutions will also be
considered.
Workshop on Coding and Cryptography
- -----------------------------------
Our Workshop aims to present some recent industrial applications of Coding
